Village Report The Village was very pleased to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication that was coordinated by the Highland Park Hospital Health & Fitness Center in Buffalo Grove. On behalf of the Center, Robyn Kove, Director of Marketing & Public Relations coordinated a dedication of their new Village of Buffalo Grove Trustee Bill Reid Memorial Garden at the east end of their building. The dedication was held at 10:00 a.m., 10/18/2000. Trustee Reid served the Village with honor and dedication for 17 years; he passed away on May 28, 2000. Thank you Robyn and HP! Art Program(s) Survey Results The Commission reviewed the survey results regarding art programs and facilities in neighboring communities. Nineteen (19) municipalities responded to the survey. Supplemental literature was distributed at the meeting. It was suggested that other agencies be contacted to review their programs and learn about their centers. The following agencies are private organizations, managed by the Park District or some other entity other than the Village. Commission members detailed below volunteered to contact the agency and provide the information about their programs, service, facility size & budget, and other information to Ghida before the next meeting. W Arlington Heights Metropolis. — Susan W Waukegan —Jack Benny Center for the Arts. — Susan W Libertyville Adler Center for the Performing Arts. — Ilene W Skokie Centre East. — Fred Next Steps Arts Services/Program in Buffalo Grove and the Surrounding Area. It was suggested that the group determine the arts programs/services that are available in Buffalo Grove. Ilene shared with the group a list of Actors, Art, Dance, Music and other resources; the information was featured in Pioneer Press newspaper, 8/24/2000 edition, "Diversions" section. Ghida will send notice to these agencies asking that the Village be placed on their mailing and contact list. It is possible that the Village publish information in the Village newsletter relating to art programs and services; however, the group was reminded that the Commission serves at this point as an advisory council to the Village Board. It is not the Commission's place to get involved with programming or to take away from the services that are/should be planned by the Park District or other local organization. An invitation will be made to the Executive Director of the Park District to attend or send a representative to the Commission's next meeting. The purpose is to learn about Park District programs relating to the arts. Arts Festival. The group agreed that Buffalo Grove should provide an arts festival to the community. Ghida indicated that in December, 1999 the Chamber obtained information about working with Howard Alan Events to provide an arts festival in the community. Below is information pertaining to this program. About Howard Alan Events http://Www.artfestival.com In the past 18 years, Howard Alan Events have become America's leading producer of juried art fairs. Every week, they create the world's largest collection of artists and contemporary crafters. The artists come from all over the United States and abroad, to create a collection of over 15 million dollars of art on display. Every weekend Howard Alan Events creates a street festival, often defined as an "affordable open art gallery". Approximately thirty-nine (39) events are planned throughout the year; however, additional smaller events are coordinated in Alan's home state of Florida. Unlike a museum or art gallery, people can view the artwork, while having an opportunity to meet the individual who created it. Alan has a database of over 4,000 diverse artists. Approximately 1,000 of these artists pay an annual membership fee to Howard Alan Events, Ltd., and in return they receive admission to select art festivals throughout the U.S., health insurance, and other benefits. Through these databases and other promotion opportunities, Alan is able to select which artists he would like presented for a particular show. This way, Alan explains that every show is unique unto itself and no two shows are alike. Local artists would also be given an opportunity to display their artwork. Popular shows such as the Las Olas Art Fair or the Chicago Tribune North Michigan Magnificent Mile Art Festival receive around 1,200 applications for only 200 - 300 coveted spots. These shows feature a variety of fine art and craft including sculpture, paintings, photography, fused glass, and jewelry, produced by the nation's top award-winning artists. Ghida indicated that she would talk to the Chamber about their interest in the arts festival for 2001. This information will also be shared with the Village Board for their review and consideration. If approved, a planning committee would be formed to coordinate the details of the event. Business—Schools loin together to encourage arts in the community. Ilene suggested that the schools may be interested to work with the local businesses to promote arts in the community. There are 22 shopping centers in Buffalo Grove. The centers would be contacted and asked if they would be willing to post artwork, size such as 11"x17", in their window. Each school or grade would have one shopping center and the school and/or the shopping center would agree upon a theme for the artwork. The artwork would be displayed for a certain period of time. The program would provide children the opportunity to display their art, the businesses would benefit by the walking traffic of people viewing the art and shopping in the center. It was suggested that this program should not be year-round as business owners may be more willing to participate if they knew the artwork would be displayed for a limited amount of time. Meeting Schedule If members are not able to attend a meeting, they should contact Ghida Sahyouni at the Village. All meetings will be held at Village Hall, lower level conference room, starting at 6:00 p.m. The next meeting will be held: .
