Overview of Band Programs; Presentation by Jeff Slepak, Stevenson High School. Issues to consider when contemplating organizing a band program: • Age level— is the target audience for adults/children/seniors? • Who can join. Some bands are very selective, you have to meet a minimum level of expertise whereas others are open to the public. • Who is the audience; will programs be coordinated in the summer/winter? • Is the emphasis a rehearsal band —an outlet, fun activity for members, or is the planning group trying to reach a particular audience? • The band needs a conductor and this is generally a paid position. The members usually serve on a volunteer basis, and take on additional responsibilities such as marketing, programming, finance, and so forth. • Rehearsal space is a significant issue. • Consider liability and other legal issues. • Major percussion equipment. Most of the equipment is very costly. Some "serious" adult players may have their own equipment, but some organizations provide the equipment. High school budgets provide for some equipment, such as a tuba. Community bands and orchestras have expectations that the players have their own equipment. For the long term, it would be advisable to have a budget for these high priced instruments that players may not have. • Music library. Budget$50 to $75 per program; every concert would require approximately 6-7 pieces; 4 concerts/year. The group may want to explore additional pieces, depending on the program. Some music companies let you work with "music on approval". The library has to be maintained - a member needs to serve as a librarian; plus, the literature needs to be stored somewhere. • Consider length of season • Attendance policies • Admission charges • A great issues is the rehearsal location. Susan recommended that the group research Elgin's program — an advanced, well-organized program. Other exceptional programs include the North Shore Concert Band and the Illinois Brass Band. Slepak recommended that the Commission start with a interest survey to determine if residents have an interest in this type of program, and how many residents have experience in band programs. The Commission discussion the possibility of applying for a grant program whereby funding would be awarded for equipment that the Commission/Village would donate to a school. In return, the school would provide space for band practice and other functions needed for operation. Contact names and numbers for area band directors were given for follow-up, if needed. Survey ✓ Introduction ✓ Are you interested in participating in a community band, orchestra, jazz band (identify)? ✓ Would you be willing to commit to weekly rehearsals? ✓ What instrument do you play? ✓ Do you own your own instrument? ✓ How would you rate your proficiency— professional, semi-professional, or amateur. ✓ How many years have you been playing? ✓ Do you have conducting experience? ✓ Name, e-mail address, telephone. The survey will be e-mailed to Jeff to determine if he has modifications for the survey. The survey will be placed on the Village's web site, and promotion to access the survey/web site will be conducted via local newspaper, Village marquee, public access channel, water bill notices, and other methods, as appropriate. Grant/Award Program Ghida provided an overview of grant programs for the Commission to consider. Research was conducted by the Village's Administrative Intern, Stacey Kelly: • Arts in Education Residency Program • Short Term Artists Residency (STAR) Program • Community Arts Access • Artstour Program Arts Festival in Buffalo Grove. Fred provided information from Chicago Gallery News. The magazine is available for review in Ghida Sahyouni's office. Deer Path Art League. Good resource for art shows; contact names were provided. Lynne researched a number of art companies and organizations that coordinate art fairs. Several recommendations were provided: By the end of August, the artists are burned out, so coordinate the event early in the year; i.e. an art fair complimenting Buffalo Grove Days may not work well. A paved surface is preferred to park property (grass). If an organization is going to coordinate a event, they should start small. Artists want to be familiar with the host organization and the community. Howard Alan events — Lynne explained that Skokie is conducting two shows using the production company, so a Buffalo Grove location is not feasible. Riverwoods —juried art fair. Lynne explained that all the contacts indicated that a new organization should start small. Given the several obstacles discussed, it did not seem feasible for the Art Commission to coordinate an art fair at this time. Village Report Vehicle Sticker Design Contest. Trustee Jeff Braiman asked the Commission to consider a vehicle sticker design contest. The Commission agreed that the program would be an excellent opportunity to promote art in the community, and a great venture between the schools and the Village. Below are features of the program: ✓ Information shall be sent to the schools as soon as possible; the program would be open to all students K-8. ✓ No theme shall be presented. ✓ A template of the vehicle sticker shall be provided to the school so they are aware of the size of the sticker and the other pertinent information printed, i.e. fiscal year. ✓ The contest shall run effective immediately through June 1, 2001. The grand prize winner shall be announced in September, 2001. Buffaloes on Parade. Linda and Ghida shared information about the Arlington Pony program and highlighted the Chicago Cow program in 1999. Ghida presented research about Buffaloes on parade. The cost of the fiberglass, life-size structures was presented. The Commission agreed that major, local businesses should be contacted to determine if they would be interested in purchasing a Buffalo to paint themselves or they could have a community organization paint the structure. The name of the company could be highlighted on the Buffalo. The Buffaloes would be on display throughout the community, the locations determined by the Village for approximately three months. After that time, the Buffaloes would be given to the business/owner. The businesses could keep their buffalo, or donate it to a school or non-for-profit organization. Next Steps Fred suggested that a Commission report be included in the next Village newsletter. Information about the Commissions' programs should be included in the Arts Commission section of the web site. Motion to Adjourn— motion made by Susan, second by Robyn. Motion carried. Meeting Schedule . The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2001. All meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month (unless otherwise noted) - Village Hall, lower level conference room, starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting concluded at 9:22 p.m. Linda thanked the members for their attendance and input.
