Absent: Sandy Greenberg Susan Moore Elizabeth Radtke Trustee Liaisons Trustee Jeff Braiman - present Trustee Jeff Berman Welcome &Announcements Linda welcomed the commission members. Approval of Minutes, 2/7/2001 Approved by Lynne Schneider, second by Fred Weinstein. Motion Carried. School/Business Partnership — Report by Ilene Strauss. Overview of the proposed program: The Arts Commission would work with the schools to promote artwork by the students; then the Commission would coordinate with the businesses and encourage the artwork to be displayed in the storefronts. This program would promote artwork and support the business community. Dist. 21- positive response — it was suggested that we call back during the summer so they can incorporate the program in their school calendar. Another district was contacted and they too expressed interest. They would also like a proposal during the summer. Ilene will follow-up and contact the other school districts (including Dist. 103 and St. Mary's) serving Buffalo Grove. VILLAGE REPORT Buffaloes on Parade Program Ghida advised the Commission that twenty (20) businesses have expressed an interest in the Buffaloes on Parade Program. Two additional businesses are on the reserve list. The program would work as follows: ✓ A packet of information would be mailed to each interested business next week; included in the packet will be an invoice for $2,000; a map of the community highlighting the municipal complex; and a questionnaire about the business' interest in the Buffalo. ✓ The business would choose if they want to paint the buffalo, or if they want the Village to have a community group contact them for details such as company logo, theme preference, colors, etc.; the community group would paint the buffalo. This option would be included in the cost of the Buffalo. Community groups would include school art groups, girl and boy scout troops, and other organizations. ✓ The company would also have to determine if they want to a) keep their buffalo after the display period; b) donate it; or 3) if they would like to return it to the Village for sale at an auction during Buffalo Grove Days. The proceeds from each sale would go to the charity of the company's choice. ✓ For the months that the Buffaloes are on display, the Village would select the locations. Businesses that own their property would have the option to display it on their private property. If this option is selected, the business must contact the Village before placement so we can assure the location does not pose as a safety hazard. Or, the business could have the buffalo displayed surrounding the municipal complex and adjacent park district property. This option would provide visibility from Lake Cook Road, and the buffaloes would be surrounding the Buffalo Grove Days festivities during Labor Day Weekend in September, 2001. ✓ Ghida will obtain approval from the Park District regarding using Park District property for promotion of the buffaloes. ✓ Ray Rigsby, Public Works, will coordinate the placement of the buffaloes. Since the animals are life size and constructed of fiberglass, they would need to be anchored down so they can not be moved. Below is a timeline for the project: • By Wed, 3/14 Info packet to businesses • Fri, 3/30 Deadline to respond (include check) • Fri, 5/15 All Buffaloes will be delivered by this date • May Paint • June, July, August Display • Labor Day weekend, 9/2 Buffaloes shall be displayed until this date Auction • Week of 9/9 Buffalo Pick-up/Deliveries Everyone on the Commission agreed with the proposed plan. Promotion: Suggested theme: "All paths lead to the Buffalo" Feature the buffaloes in the Parade For those businesses that purchased a buffalo, they would have the option of displaying their buffalo on their float in the Labor Day parade. During Buffalo Grove Days, coordinate a contest so people can vote for their favorite buffalo. All proceeds would benefit a local charity. Pictures of the buffalo would be on display, and people would be able to donate their change for their favorite buffalo. Coordinate this program near the Arts Fair at BG Days. Photo contest; Ghida will contact Moto Photo about sponsorship. For year 2002, create a buffalo calendar. Ghida will inquire which municipalities coordinate this and contact Lynne for further research. Impose images of the Buffaloes on Parade on the Village's web site, channel 6, and other locations throughout the community. Create stationary with the Buffalo images. How many buffaloes? The Commission agreed that if there is interest from the business community, 5 additional buffaloes may be purchased for a maximum of 25. Lynne volunteered to serve on the promotion committee. Everyone was encouraged to contact Ghida with further ideas. Community Band Ghida indicated that responses have been slow with the community band survey. The Village will increase promotion with press releases, and further distribution of the survey that will include Sam Ash, Crescendo Music, Karnes Music, Wherehouse Music and other locations. Lynne offered to place the survey in the BG Singers Program. The survey will continue to be promoted via the Village communication methods: Village newsletter, web site, marquee, public access channel, press releases to local papers, water bill notices, flyers to Village buildings, notices to the park district and other organizations. Information will also be placed in the Chamber newsletter. Churches/temples. Dairy Queen, and other businesses. The deadline to respond to the survey shall be April 30, 2001. Vehicle Sticker Design Contest Ghida received a few entries to the Village's Vehicle Sticker Design Contest. The commission suggested that further promotion be conducted: • Offer to the Park District as a camp project and for general distribution. • Offer to community groups such as the brownie troops. • Attach as a .pdf to the List Serve and web site. Skokie's Chicagoland Juried Art Show The Village of Skokie mailed information to the Village about an upcoming Juried Art Show, sponsored by their Fine Arts Commission. The event will be held April 22 through May 18, 2001. Fred volunteered to attend. Ghida will contact Skokie and acknowledge this Commissioner's presence. Meeting Schedule .
