Welcome Howard Green —starting a Community Band in Buffalo Grove
BG resident since 1983. Mr. Green distributed "Notes on Next Steps for Establishing a Buffalo
Grove Community Band" (May 2, 2001).
➢ Timetable
➢ Publicity
➢ Establish an interim band board
➢ Establish a budget
➢ Find a venue for rehearsals, dates, and times.
➢ Obtain items such as music stands, instruments, folders, etc.
➢ Establish initial policies and bylaws
➢ Next steps.
It was suggested that promotion/first practice begin after the holidays in September, 2001.
Community band —40-80 people recommended.
Participants are generally members of multiple bands.
Commission next steps:
1) The Commission agreed that they wanted to pursue the creation of a community band.
2) Space —school rooms would be the most logical solution; junior high schools. Ghida will contact
the superintendents of the local school districts to inquire about meeting space.
3) Linda will contact Howard regarding budget figures.
4) Ilene will contact other bands —Glenview, Deerfield, MP and others to obtain copies of their
bylaws.
Chair Report
No report.
Commissioner Reports
✓ Ilene— Business School Partnership Program. Requested that the Commission postpone
organizing the program for one year.
✓ Fred —Art Fair. Report will be provided at a subsequent meeting. Sandy recommended that
the Commission consider sponsoring an Art Fair. Sandy will follow-up with a contact regarding
program requirements.
✓ Lynne— Buffaloes on Parade. Lynne was unable to attend the meeting, but Ghida distributed
on behalf of Lynne three cost estimates for "Buffalo calendars". The costs varied greatly from
$5,900 for 5,000 full size glossy paper calendars to $11,500 for the same specifications (see
attached cost estimate). After much discussion, the Commission agreed to postpone the creation
of a buffalo calendar for one year.
VILLAGE REPORT
Public Hearing regarding Route 22. May 23, 2001, 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Marriott
Lincolnshire. Everyone is encouraged to attend and give an oral or written comment.
Buffaloes on Parade Program
Ghida advised the Commission that twenty (20) businesses have either sent their checks
confirming their participation in the program or returned their survey forms and indicated that
payment is forthcoming. AAIM Printers was contacted and expressed an interest, although they
have not returned their form or payment.
The first shipment of the buffaloes was received on Friday, 4/27/2001; the second shipment is
expected on Friday, 5/11/2001. The final shipment is expected three weeks thereafter. Ghida
expressed great disappointment in the delivery schedule from the owner. Unfortunately, they were
only able to make one mold of the buffalo and each buffalo takes two to three days to make.
Auction — approximately four companies plan to auction their buffalo. Ghida sent a press release,
placed info on the Village's marquee and channel 6, and placed info about the Village seeking an
auctioneer on other village communication means. A BG resident recommended a friend and
colleague, Ted Cucuro, Sheldon Good & Company. According to a biography that was sent tot the
Village, Mr. Cucuro is a veteran realtor and auctioneer since 1991. His accreditation's include CAI,
the highest designation recognized by the auction industry from the Certified Auctioneers Institute;
the accredited Auctioneer of Real Estate (AARE) designation from the Auction marketing Institute;
and he is a graduate of the Missouri Auction School. The Commission agreed that they were
comfortable with Mr. Cucuro given his credentials.
Promotion events:
Vote for your favorite buffalo — coordinate the contest on the Village's web site.
Auction at Buffalo Grove Days.
Photo Contest—open to all Buffalo Grove residents. Moto Photo has expressed an interest in
donating the grand prize for the contest. More details will be provided at the next meeting. The
winner of the contest will be announced during Buffalo Grove Days, prior to the auction.
Letter to restaurants —Ghida mailed a letter to all Buffalo Grove restaurants encouraging
involvement in the program by providing specials on their menus associated with the Buffalo
theme. All businesses that participate in the buffalo theme program are encouraged to contact the
Village and their program or service will be detailed in the Village newsletter and other Village
media.
Impose images of the Buffaloes on the Village's web site, channel 6, and other locations
throughout the community.
"Buffalo Boulevard" — Ray Rigsby, Supt. of Public Works agreed to provide sign at Raupp
Boulevard and Church Street.
Vehicle Sticker Design Contest.
A great deal of promotion has been conducted for the Vehicle Sticker Design Contest and there
have been minimal entries received. The Village has contacted the school via letters to the
Districts, a letter to each principal, a-mails to the principals, calls to the school secretaries; other
promotion included the Village newsletter, channel 6, press releases, the Village marquee; flyers to
the Park District, libraries, and more. All Commission members were encouraged to promote this
program.
