Commissioner Reports
✓ Sandy— Upcoming Art Fairs: (1) Old Town Art Fair, June 9-10, Lincoln Park West; and (2)
Festival of Fine Craft, June 23 &24, 2001.
Art Fair—Sandy provided information about coordinating an art fair based on the contacts that she
has made as part of her research. A great deal of discussion took place pertaining to the
coordination of an art fair in the community.
Ghida will extend an invitation to the Illinois Arts Council to attend the next meeting and provide
insight on coordinating an art fair.
Buffalo Grove Community Band
Ilene and Elizabeth share information regarding their contacts at the Arlington Orchestra and
Deerfield Community Band. The latter organization provided a wealth of valuable information. The
director is compensated $3,000 per year. The Band operates under the direction of the Park
District and the Village. The Village provides a stipend to purchase instruments; the amount of
funding varies from year to year. Three to five concerts are coordinated per year. Forty members
participate in the band, although it is not uncommon for only 25 members to attend performances.
Linda shared information that Howard Green provided via e-mail, dated 5/21/2001.
Ghida spoke to Dr. Doug Parks, SD 102 and Dr. Tom Many, SD 96 and both offered the use of
their schools for rehearsal practice. It was discussed that the Village would provide a follow-up
letter and provide dates, times, and other details pertaining to the request.
Follow-up research will be conducted including budget details and a publicity/marketing plan. It
was recommended that the first meeting be coordinated in the fall, with a grand introductory
presentation in the spring. Linda will provide an update of this information to Howard Green.
Ghida will contact Stevenson High School about their fee structure for using their school for
performances.
Elizabeth will contact Glenview for a copy of their budget and supplemental information such as
bylaws.
Vehicle Sticker Design Contest.
The Village received approximately 150 entries for the Contest. The majority of the entries were
from St. Mary's students. The variety of designs and the creativity displayed by the students was
outstanding. Several entries were submit by non-residents, and the Commission agreed that those
entries should not be valid due to the rules set forth on the contest entry form.
Each Commissioner provided their top three votes; the votes were tallied and there was a tie for
first place. After further review, the design by a 13-year old resident was selected for first place.
Robyn Kove suggested that a theme be incorporated onto the bottom of the sticker, "Driving Home
Safety". This information will be presented to the Village Board for their final approval. A tentative
date of Monday, July 2, 2001 was set to recognize the first place winner with a $100 US Savings
Bond. All contestants will receive a letter acknowledging their creativity and interest in the contest.
McDonald's will be contacted to seek their interest in providing coupons for an ice cream cone or
other treat to all contestants.
