Welcome
Linda welcomed the commission members; the meeting began at 7:30 p.m. Linda recognized
Ghida Sahyouni (now Neukirch) for all of the work undertaken for the Buffaloes on Parade program
which culminated with Buffalo Grove Days.
Approval of Minutes, 8/8/2001
Approved by Schneider, second by Moore. Motion Carried.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band.
Open House 9/13/2001. A total of 26 interested people attended the recent Open House. Howard
Green provided a Powerpoint presentation to those in attendance and was pleased with the
representation and mix of instruments that were offered. The first rehearsal is scheduled for
Thursday, October 4th at Meridian School following an article to be written for the Buffalo Grove
Countryside paper that is intended to promote the group. The apparent need at this time is for tuba
and saxophone players in order to properly balance the band. In addition to the news article, a
letter is to be mailed out to those attending as well as to those that may have expressed an
interest.
It was noted that a representative of the Arts Commission should be selected to act as a permanent
representative to the Band. Also, there is an immediate concern as to how the Band will be funded,
music purchased and Howard paid according to a commitment that appears to have been made.
✓ To that end, Lynne and Robyn have been working on a financial sponsorship program that was
reviewed with the Commission members and modified.
✓ Susan Moore indicated she would contact Woodstock to see how their Mozart Festival
functions, specifically in the area for raising funds, recognition of those that donate and how any
opening receptions may take place.
There was significant discussion on sponsorships. The Commission must develop a solicitation
program in that the current climate to for donations/sponsorships will get difficult due to economic
and political uncertainty. An option may be to ask for pledges to be paid over the course of a year
(which has been set to match the calendar year-the calendar year will be the Band's "season") so
that those interested in pledging can watch the progress of the Band and feel that their
contributions are being used for a viable program.
Other financial issues: How do we want to address the salary/stipend issue with Howard? One
suggestion was to remit any commitment to him quarterly. Bill Brimm suggested that the
Commission may want to solicit donations with a flyer mailed through the water bills. Lastly, there
is a desire to establish some type of exclusive category of sponsorships at the $2,500 and $5,000
levels whereby only one type of business can make a donation at that level, i.e. one insurance
broker, one grocery store, one car dealer, etc.
The final comments for the evening entailed the need to develop a promotional package for
Howard to use for the Band and the possibility of a future graded competition to develop and
present a new logo for the Village flag.
