Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival — Recap by Amy Amdur An overview of the festival was provided to the Village Board at their meeting on August 19, 2002. Amy provided an extensive packet of press clippings featuring the festival prior to and after the festival. The packet is available upon request. A three-page recap was also offered by Amdur Productions. A review of artists, layout, parking, loading, trash management, music, volunteers, opening previews, shuttle, artists breakfast, and other areas was reviewed and discussed. The Commission thanked Amy and her company for her hard work and coordination of an outstanding festival! Buffalo Grove Sculpture Park—Welcome Ron Starr, Artists 1) What makes up a sculpture park? Outdoor sculpture needs to be massive. Sculptures are generally recommended larger than life size because viewers need to see the sculptures at a distance. The number of sculptures depends on how much space is available. Placing sculptures along the bike path would be appealing, similarly, it's possible to have sculptures throughout the community at either gateways to the community, in front of various businesses, or at different Village facilities such as the golf courses, village hall, etc. 2) How long can a sculpture last, in general? Outdoor art could last forever. Skokie rotates their sculptures every two years. 3) What is the estimated cost of an outdoor art piece? In an effort to promote their work, it's possible to conduct a request for proposals for $1,000 to $2,500 per piece. There are additional costs for installation. There are extra costs for concrete pads as bases. 4) A three-ring binder of information was shared with the Commission and is available upon request. 5) Educational programs can be structured around the sculpture park. 6) Consider sound with several sculptures. ✓ Gayle will talk to a representative from Skokie to obtain further information about their sculpture park, i.e. obtain a request for proposal, number of sculptures, rotating schedules, list of artists, etc. ✓ Ilene will conduct research on grant opportunities for this endeavor. Buffalo Grove Days - recap • Slow start due to placement of the table (next to voter registration). • Coverage was very slow— not enough volunteers. • Next year, it's advised the volunteers walk around, and at least 2-3 volunteers should be present at each shift. • It is recommended that a display be prepared to highlight events of the Arts Commission. • There was a presentation made at Bingo promoting the sale of the water bottles. It is recommended that this type of action should be conducted for other events throughout the festivities. A total of $20 was raised from water bottle sales at Buffalo Grove Days. The cost of the water bottles was approximately $300. Special thanks to Linda, Fred, Gayle, Ilene, Rebecca, and Bonnie for working the AC booth. Include "SUPPORT THE ARTS COMMISSION" in the next newsletter, and include photos of the Commission on the public access channel. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Buffalo Grove Days Parade. The Band won the President's Award at the parade — congratulations! Several members participated in the parade. Sponsorship - Ghida provided an update on the budget and "band-aides".
