Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Band Board Report .
The Band earned $800 from two performances during the holiday season — special thanks to
Hope Lutheran ($300) and Northwest Assembly of God ($500).
• A call for musicians was issued due to members leaving for personal reasons. Press releases
were issued by the Village; and the information was posted on the Village's web site. Linda and
others have sent the information to schools and others via e-mail.
• Most of the music that was borrowed from Mt. Prospect has been returned; this is a large
accomplishment of the BGSB identifying that they are becoming more independent. Members of
the Mt. Prospect Band have been a great source of inspiration and insight.
Sponsorship- Ghida provided an update on the budget and "band-aides". A copy of the budget was
distributed and is available upon request. There is a total of$5,177.30 in the band budget.
As discussed at the last meeting, a letter was sent by the Village to all sponsors at their one year
anniversary in December. Ilene is following-up and calling all sponsors. It was identified that
Highland Park Hospital Health and Fitness Center has not provided funding for the new year; Ilene
will follow-up.
Upcoming performance schedule:
✓ 5/4/03— Sunday. Stevenson High School. 3:00 p.m. Confirmed. The Band will coordinate
creation of the program and flyers. A name of the performance has not yet been created.
✓ 7/4/03— Independence Day Celebration, Rotary Village Green. — no contract yet.
Sculpture Park & Grant Research
A discussion took place regarding design of a program, grant opportunities, cost, etc. The
subcommittee will meet on this issue, compile a proposal and present it to the Commission then
the Village Board.
Art League
A discussion took place regarding the Art League. Ghida was still obtaining comments from the
Village Board; the issue will be deferred to the next meeting.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival 2003
Ghida provided a status report of the Letter of Understanding with Amdur Productions. It was
recommended that the Commissioners evaluate the artists and provide awards (ribbon and a
t-shirt) for each selected artist in each category.
Old Business - Goals
1) Fred suggested setting up a silent or regular auction of art items during the intermission of the
May Band performance.
2) Bruce suggested at the last meeting that a silent auction could be coordinated as part of the
opening celebration of the Art Festival at Eskape. Motion made by Schneider, second Weissman.
Motion carried. Ghida will research this issue further.
a) Lynne expressed the challenges with obtaining auction items.
b) Sandy suggested offering artists an opportunity to donate a piece of art, in place of the exhibitor
fee (under consideration). Ghida will research this issue and follow-up at the next meeting.
Village Report
1) Ghida distributed the contact list and requested updates of Commissioners.
2) The Spring Village Newsletter will be issued to the community in late March. Anyone that has
items to be included should contact Ghida by February 10th.
a) Bonnie will provide Ghida with information regarding the upcoming band performance.
b) Ghida will include information regarding the art festival —date and volunteers needed.
Next Steps —Goals
• Fred suggested that the Commission should focus on refining the existing programs of the
Commission — band, art festival, grant research and application. Plus, the sculpture park should
be explored further.
• Fred also indicated that he attended Fire on Ice , a program coordinated by Evanston on New
Years Eve. Fireworks were coordinated, music was played by a variety of groups, food was
offered, and a variety of other activities were coordinated. Several commissioners expressed
support for winter break festival in BG.
• Michelle suggested a survey to assess people's interest in attending a New Years function.
• Gayle expressed a strong interest in coordinating a revenue-producing event, such as a paid
concert with a notable group.
• Sandy suggested a lock-in, similar to Stevenson's lock-in programs for senior high school
students.
Meeting Schedule
. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m. AC meetings will be
held on the second Wednesday of each month - unless otherwise noted. Meetings will be held at
Village Hall, lower level conference room, unless noted.
