Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Band Board 1) Bonnie reported that the Band resumed rehearsals last week. 2) Howard indicated that a couple of new members have joined the band; additional/new instruments include a tuba player, trombone, and a contra-bassoon player. One member returned to the Band fter a long period of absence due to personal reasons. 3) Howard noted that Steve Robinson created a %2 page ad to be included in the Park District program. Great job Steve! May 16th performance —change of date! Bonnie reminded the group that the concert was changed to May 16th so the Band could perform in the larger auditorium at Stevenson High School (thanks Susan Mann!). Allison indicated that she is working with several members on the kids art program to promote children's art and involve youth with the Band. As discussed at previous meetings, interested art teachers would be given a piece that the Band intends to play at the performance; the kids would have the opportunity to create artwork — paint, color, or draw — based on their interpretation of the music. The art would be judged and awards provided at the performance. The program would be open to students in grades 5th through high school. Allison is working with art teachers and other educators to promote the program. Lori suggested that the Art League members assist the Arts Commission in judging the entries. Howard noted in order to involve more people, artwork would be encouraged by either class submittals, or individual submittals. Sponsorship - Ghida provided an update on the "band-aides" and expenditures. It was reported that Jim Osters provided the revenue that was made from the three holiday performances at local churches. The revenue was deposited into the Village's Band account. A copy of the budget was distributed and is available upon request. Performance schedule: ✓ 5/16/04 —Sunday. Second Annual Spring Concert. SHS. "Different Forms of Art is Portrayed in Music". Band Survey Ghida referenced the survey results that were e-mailed to the Arts Commission and Band Board. It was noted that only the quantitative information was distributed to the members that completed and requested the survey results. Both the qualitative and quantitative information was provided to the AC and Band Board. Ghida met with Howard prior to the AC meeting to discuss goals of the Band and specific recommendations that were offered. It was indicated that recommendations are encouraged on an on-going basis from members of the Band. Susan commended the Band Board for an exceptional response rate from survey respondents. It was indicated that future member surveys will be limited to one to two pages, although this past survey was a great opportunity to get a variety and extensive amount of feedback from the members since it was the first survey conducted with the "new" band. Ghida thanked the Band for their continued hard work and commitment. Each member is very talented, and together, the Band is exceptional! Art League Lori reported that the Committee met recently to review and solidify the proposed Art League Plan. • The proposed logo for the League was distributed to the Commission. • Open studio was proposed for twice per month. • A "welcome weekend" is proposed for February, 2004. A gallery and information booth is proposed to promote the Art League and distribute plans for the year. • Lori is checking with various establishments such as the JCC and park district to utilize their facilities for workshops that require a sinks and "work area". • Display cases at Vernon Township Library are reserved for December, 2004. • At a recent Art League meeting, the committee generated various ideas to promote the League. • Howard inquired about an age limit for participants; Lori indicated that a minimum age has not been identified. • Time has been scheduled in March to start open studio and special events. • A mailing list is being generated to promote the art league. • Ghida noted that she has requested a legal opinion from corporation counsel regarding the display of art in public places. It is necessary to receive this information before any promotion is conducted of individual artists. "Limelight Cafe" — February 20, 2004, 7:30— 10:00 p.m., at eSkape. • Gayle reported that flyers were printed promoting the Limelight Cafe. Special thanks to Barbara for printing the sign-up sheet for the program. • Promotion will be conducted at BGHS, SHS, Village Hall or on the Village's web site. • Ghida will e-mail the flyer to the Commission for additional promotion. • Bonnie will take flyers for BGHS; Gayle will distribute flyers for SHS. • Gayle, Marilyn, Lori, Robyn, and Ghida will be at the event. • The cost of the event is $10 per attendees (includes performers). Timeline: Began promotion January 9 Last day to sign-up for cafe February 13 RSVP to eSkape February 16 Bench Program — "Sittin' Pretty in BG" Ghida reported that Ilene has indicated that she is unable to attend the meeting due to a serious illness in her family. The Commission expressed great health and recovery to her and her family. Ghida distributed a report from Ilene identifying two proposals from bench companies. The Commission compared the material, design and cost of the benches. The quotations were provided by Jamestown Advanced Products Corp and NuToys Leisure Products. Fred suggested the Art League members paint a bench to promote the program for 2005. The bench would be displayed at the art festival and various other programs throughout the year. Lori suggested that after the bench is painted, sponsorship would be available to offset the cost of the bench. Greenberg made a motion for the Arts Commission to purchase a bench to promote the program. Model 61-610-6D by NuToys Leisure Products, a 6' bench, for a cost of $276. Second by Pervos. Motion carried. Old Business No report. Village Report Linda indicated that she completed the 2003 Annual Report for the Commission.
