Neukirch, Assistant Village Manager Trustee Liaison Trustee Jeff Berman Trustee Steve Trilling - present Welcome In Linda's absence, Fred welcomed the Commission members and special guests Cheryl Fayne, Communications Manager, and Judy Hughes, Arts Commissioner, representing the Village of Northbrook. Other special guests included Marilyn Alaynick, Lori Boxer, Ken Horowitz-BGSB, and Perry Kofkin-Youth Commission. The meeting began at 7:05 p.m. Approval of Minutes, 1/14/04 Motion by Schneider, second by Pervos. Motion carried. Chair Report No report. Commissioners Reports No report. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Band Board Ken reported that the band board will be meeting to discuss details for the May performance. Sponsorship - Ghida provided an update on the "band-aides" and expenditures. A copy of the budget was distributed and is available upon request. May 16th performance. "Pictures in Music" — children's art program Children's Art Program — it was discussed that letters will be drafted to all schools inviting kindergarten children through eighth graders an opportunity to create art based on a selection of music that will be performed at the May band performance. The following timeframe was suggested: Letters to schools — week of 2/16 Teacher confirmation of participation - by March 1st. Deadline for artwork- Friday, April 16th. Certificates would be provided to all participants. It was requested that the band provide a CD or tape of the music that they want the children to listen to, to Ghida within the next week. The CD will be sent to all schools that express an interest in participating. Pervos made a motion to provide a certificate for all participants and special recognition in specific areas as determined, i.e. Creativity Award; second by Mann. 5 in favor; 1 against. Motion carried. Program name considerations: Pictures in Music—selected! Color the Music—one vote. Color in the Notes Art in Music Performance schedule: ✓ 5/16/04 —Sunday. Third Annual Spring Concert. SHS. Art League Lori distributed a proposed plan for the Art League. Based on discussion with the Village, it was suggested that the Village could not support a plan as previously submitted due to limited staff and financial resources. The proposed plan entails a number of local, professional artists that would be used as a resource to the Arts Commission. For example, several artists have expressed an interest in assisting with the painting of the "Sittin' Pretty" bench. Each proposed program would be reviewed on a case by case basis. Other programs discussed as part of a proposed work plan throughout the year included, but was not limited to, Children's Art Exhibit at a Band performance, Halloween window painting for students, and year-end exhibit at the Vernon Area Library. "Limelight Cafe" — February 20, 2004, 7:30— 10:00 p.m., at eSkape. Gayle reported 10 bands have signed-up to perform and two individual performances. Gayle talked to the manager at eSkape about two stages so one performance could be done while the follow-up ground/individual was setting-up. It is anticipated that each performance will be given 20 minutes to perform. Ghida will set-up the schedule based on registration, then she and Gayle will confirm participation by the end of the week. Subcommittee members — please meet at eSkape at 6:00 pm: 1) Gayle 2) Fred 3) Marilyn 4) Robyn 5) Michelle 6) Barbara 7) Ghida Bench Program — "Sittin' Pretty in BG" Fred reported that Village staff ordered the bench for the program on January 23, 2004. It is estimated that delivery will be in 4-6 weeks from this date. Ilene is involved on the sub-committee to create a draft for the bench. Sandy also volunteered to serve on the sub-committee. Lori indicated she would report this program to the Art League to inquire if other artists are interested in submitting draft drawings for the painted bench. Submittals should be sent to Ghida within the next two months. Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival, July 17 & 18, 2004 Ghida reported that more than 270 applicants have applied for the BG festival. Sandy reported that she and Ilene attended the jury on Tuesday. They reviewed one and two dimensional applications. Two (2) gallery owners, 2 artists, 2 curators, and others served on the jury. Sandy indicated it was well done and an excellent experience. Chalk Around the Block— Ghida indicated that Amy suggested a creative program that she saw in Georgia at a local art festival. Community members — businesses, individuals and families would be given the opportunity to buy a part of the sidewalk that they would paint the morning of the art festival. The artwork would be reviewed then "best art" would be provided to the most creative or most colorful drawings. The Commission expressed interest in this program. Revenue generating ideas: Fan sale —similar to last year's fans. Mister fans. Ghida will obtain cost estimates and report at the next meeting. Old Business No report. Village Report 1) Special thanks to Cheryl and Judy for attending the meeting from Northbrook. A copy of the Northbrook Annual Arts Commission Report was distributed for review. 2) Ghida indicated that the Northwest Water Commission will be giving Buffalo Grove 6,000 water bottles in which to sell and generate revenue. Anyone interested in submitting a draft label, 2" x 2", should present the draft to Ghida by the end of the month. The bottles can be sold at the Art Festival. The Village will be responsible for the cost of printing and affixing the label. New Business Fred reported, on behalf of Linda, that the BG Singers upcoming performance will be March 6th at 8 pm and March 7th at 3 pm. Several AC members are involved. Meeting Schedule The next meeting will be held on March 10th at 7:00 p.m. AC meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month - unless otherwise noted. Meetings will be held at Village Hall, second floor conference room, unless noted. Motion to Adjourn — Motion by Pervos, second by Herman. Motion carried.
