Chair Report

Productions. Linda indicated that she did not recognize any artists that will be at the BG Festival
so it is anticipated that there will be a similar audience base due to the diversity of artists.
Linda reported that she attended the People, Places & Issues cable program. President Hartstein
led the program; attendees also included Amy Amdur and three artists — Michael Mitz, Roy
Schallenburg, and John Karl.
Commissioners Reports
No report.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Band Board
• We received a contract for Stevenson High School for the May 15, 2004—the performance has
been confirmed.
• Howard reported that he and other band members responded recently to several inquiries from
potential new members. A new percussionist started with the Band recently; they have another
horn player who is also a composer that is interested in joining the band.
• The Band is working on next summer's venues and they are considering a performance at
Cantigny in Wheaton. The BGSB performance would be excellent opportunity to expand their
audience base.
• The fall program concert is already planned — Music of the Fantastique.
• Next spring's performance theme will be American and Spanish.
• Special thanks to Susan Mann and District 102 for allowing the Band to utilize Meridian's Band
room for rehearsals! "Susan has been incredible to work with as part of this program".
• The Band is ready for the Independence Day performance. They look forward to performing
with the Singers.
• Lynne recommended that the Band provide information of their performance as soon as
possible to the Park District so the information could be included the Park District program book for
Evita.
Sponsorship - Ghida provided an update on the "band-aides" and expenditures. A copy of the
budget was distributed and is available upon request.

"Limelight Cafe"
Linda reported that plans for the upcoming Limelight Cafe are underway. Six teen bands are
scheduled to perform for %2 hour each beginning at 6:30 pm; the program will end at 9:30 pm.
Trustee Johnson recommended that the Village Grill be contacted to serve food since they are a
new lease holder for the restaurant (starting July 1). It was indicated that an ice cream vendor
would be onsite, and attendees could also get food from the local restaurants in the Town Center.
It was not recommended that the Arts Commission sell water or pop.
7/7/04 Limelight Volunteers — Lori, Marilyn, Bob, Gayle, Linda, Fred.
Ghida will bring fans that the volunteers could sell to attendees.
Sam Ash will provide lights. Linda will follow-up the Sam-Ash contact.
Ghida noted that information about the program and a highlight of Sam Ash as sponsor has been
featured in the upcoming Village newsletter.
Bench Program - "Sittin' Pretty in BG"
Ghida reported that she has arranged with John Hennesey, Artist to paint the Village's bench, in
exchange for a promotion of his work in the Village newsletter. The bench was delivered to him
last week, and it is expected that he will have it back by July 12th. John is the artist that painted,
Joy of the Game in Buffalo Grove. Ghida indicated that his work is outstanding.
Fred reported that he attended an "Orcas in the City" program in Vancouver whereby orcas were
painted by artists and on display in the community. A plaque was created for each orca identifying
the artist, the sponsor/owner, and the organization that benefits from proceeds of the program.
Sandy reported issuing a call to artists in all art publications encouraging artists to take a bench to
paint, in turn, a plaque would be on display to promote their work.
Lori reported at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, guitars were painted by musicians with proceeds
from the sale of the artwork benefiting the United Way.
Trustee Johnson indicated that if there is a large group of artists that would be interested, it would
be worthwhile to pursue.
Fred suggested issuing a call to artists, and have a group of sponsors that would purchase the
benches who would pick to have a professional artist to paint the bench or an amateur group.
Cost:
It was indicated that the Village paid $368, product and delivery, for one bench.
Motion by Weissman to charge $600 per bench, second by Boxer. Motion carried.
Submittee:
Marilyn, Lori, Sandy & Fred.
Ideas for the revenue raised from this program:
Fred: Defibrillators for the police cars.
Lynne- art programs.
Lori -art building
Howard - band shell (replace Rotary's).
Part of the Arts card
Linda thanked Michelle for the hard work that she put into this program - the idea was
commendable. Michelle reported that due to lack of solicitation for the program, we only had
twelve businesses participate in the VIP card program. Lynne indicated that it was difficult to sell
the participation for business for $25 when Stevenson offers it for free. Linda indicated that if we
are all not on board for a program, then we shouldn't do it. This program required everyone's
participation to sell the program for businesses. Chuck indicated that businesses are getting
solicited daily so another program is difficult to introduce.
Bottom line - it didn't work. A letter will be sent to all businesses that expressed an interest in the
program returning their $25 participation fee and thanking them for their interest in the program.
It was recommended that a sample survey be issued in the future to assess people's interest in a
program.
Art Gallery, BG Fitness Center
Sandy spoke to Dan Schimmel, Park district regarding utilizing gallery space at the fitness center
for professional art. This is a program that could create a new partnership between the
Village/Arts Commission and the Park District to promote cultural arts with emphasis on visual arts.
Notes from Sandy's June 3, 2004 meeting are available upon request. Dan indicated that he
spoke to the Park District Board and on 6/22/2004 he stated that the Board wants to work with
local schools to provide art exhibits — not professional art with a highlight of community shows.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival, July 17 & 18, 2004
Ghida reviewed detailed information regarding the art festival. "Planning Details for 2004" are
available upon request.
Old Business
No business.
Village Report
1) Ghida distributed from the Clerk's Office "Official Commission" reports for each Commissioner
that returned their Economic Disclosure forms.
2) A thank you note was shared with the Arts Commission from Amy Amdur thanking the AC for
their supporting following the passing of her father, Steven Amdur.
3) Ghida distributed information from the Illinois Arts Council promoting Illinois Arts Week, October
3-9, 2004; and grant information.
Other Business
Linda reports that Lincolnshire's Art Festival is this weekend. Food Stuff will be there; they are the
contractor for BG.
Linda inquired if Amy's staff was still promoting Judaic Art as a theme in Buffalo Grove. Ghida
indicated that she spoke to Amy on two occasions about avoiding the emphasis of Judaic Art in
Buffalo Grove, rather promote that 3 artists from Israel are flying in to attend the BG festival, as
well as the other International artists that will be present.
Meeting Schedule
The next meeting will be held on August 11, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. AC meetings will be held on the
second Wednesday of each month - unless otherwise noted. Meetings will be held at Village Hall,
lower level conference room, unless noted.
