Chair Report
Linda welcomed back Ghida from maternity leave; a special thanks was extended to Susan Levy
for serving as staff liaison in Ghida's absence.
Linda also welcomed Trustee Bruce Kahn, trustee liaison to the AC; Trustee Braiman will serve as
the other liaison to the Commission. Linda thanked Fred for covering last month's meeting in her
absence.
Special congratulations to Gayle Pervos, coordinator of the Limelight Cafe. We will provide
information about the 4/29 Limelight later in the meeting. Overall, these programs have been a
tremendous success.
Commissioners Reports
No report.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
It was indicated that Bonnie is at the Band's final rehearsal before the performance on Sunday.
Ghida stated that the Band programs are in —she will bring them on Sunday.
Volunteers for Sunday's performance include Lynne, Linda and Sandy; Barbara may be able to
attend. Volunteers are needed for ticket sales, program distribution, and greeters.
"Limelight Cafe"
The April 29 Limelight was a success! Approximately 350 students attended the event. The
Village profited $276 from the event. The agreement with eSkape includes a $5 admission for
each attendee - $4 goes to eSkape and $1 goes to the Village. It was agreed that the Village
should recommend a 50/50 split with eSkape given the fact that we coordinate all the promotion,
schedule the performances, and manage the registration table. Ghida will follow-up with Bill
Feldgreber at eSkape. It was also suggested that the stage should only be open to Buffalo Grove,
Stevenson and Wheeling students; other students are welcome to attend, but the performances
should only be open to local students.
Bench Program — "Sittin' Pretty in BG"
Ghida stated that all of the benches have been picked-up by their owners, except one. The
benches should be painted by June 1, 2005. Letters were sent to all bench owners. The painted
benches, owner name, and artist(s) name (if applicable) will be promoted on the Village's web site,
channel 6 and the Village newsletter. The benches will not be on temporary display due to the fact
that they need to a tightly secured/bolted in place. Owners that donate their bench to the Village
will have their bench on permanent display around the municipal complex and possibly the Rotary
Village Green; if a business chooses to keep their bench and display it on their property, their
location will be featured in the promotion.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Ghida stated that she reviewed and approved the post card for the festival —the post card looks
great. As previously requested, there is no mention of a concentration of Judaic art.
Plans are underway for the business promotion book. We are looking for a sponsor for this book —
everyone was encouraged to consider a business that would sponsor the book and pay $300 for
printing.
The Volunteer meeting will be held on June 1 st at 6:00 p.m., prior to the next AC meeting.
The draft site plan is almost complete. Ghida stated that Amy reviewed several options to
reconfigure the site plan to better serve the businesses. Due to the width of the driveway, it was
not possible to set-up the booths back-to-back. The booths will be set-up similar to previous years,
although there will be gaps every 30' to better access the businesses.
It was stated the Binny's is interested in an outdoor wine tasting; approval from the Village's Liquor
Control Commissioner is required. Ghida is awaiting a formal request from Binny's for this
program.
Linda stated that the AC is interested in selling water at the event; Ghida will follow-up with Amy to
assure that there are no exclusivities with water sales.
Ghida stated that letters to area businesses requesting permission to use their parking lot for
overflow parking have been issued. Congregation Beth Am has agreed to the use of their parking
lot on Saturday and Sunday for artist parking! This will increase the amount of parking spaces at
the Town Center for festival attendees. A confirmation and thank you letter has been sent to Ann
Greenstein at Congregation Beth Am.
Old Business
Sing Along
Barbara provided information regarding the proposed Sing-a-long. Her research indicated that
Broadway in Chicago would cost approximately $2000 to rent and show. She attended a
Sing-a-long coordinated by the Palatine Park District. The District featured Wizard of Oz; a booklet
about the event was shared with Commissioners. The movie rights can be purchased at a cost of
$300. Lynne stated that the JCYS offered the use of their community room to show the movie at
no cost. They are interested in promoting their community room as a place to rent.
There was a concern regarding copyright laws; Ghida will follow-up on this issue.
The Commissioners agreed to pursue this program on either October 15 or 29, Saturday
afternoon. Admission would be $5.00 per person; popcorn and soda would be available for sale.
Barbara will check into the cost of the projector, screen, and sound system. Ghida will present
this proposed program to the Village Board for final consideration.
Adult Limelight
Robyn stated that she and Gayle visited the Golf Dome with the idea of using this facility for an
adult limelight this fall. The JCYS facility will also be considered. This idea will be considered for
fall implementation.
Library Display
Fred stated that he spoke to Buffalo Grove artist and resident, Dr. Larry Nierman. Dr. Nierman
appreciated the Commission establishing the art display at Indian Trails Public Library. Way to go
Fred for setting this up!
Village Report
Ghida stated that at the last Village Board meeting, all Arts Commissioners were reappointed with
the exception of Michelle Taxe and Ilene Strauss. Michelle has relocated her residence and will
assist with programs as available. Ghida spoke to Ilene this week and she is also interested in
continuing to help the Commission, but is unable to attend meeting due to personal reasons. As
previously done, an attendance report is provided to the Village Board with the annual report of the
Commission. Each Commissioner should attend at least 75% of all meetings. If anyone is unable
to attend a meeting, they are strongly encouraged to contact Ghida or Linda so we can make sure
we have a quorum for the meeting.
Meeting Schedule
The next meeting will be held on June 1, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.; the art fest volunteer meeting will
precede our regular meeting at 6:00 p.m.
AC meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month - unless otherwise noted.
Meetings will be held at Village Hall, second floor conference room, unless noted.
Motion to Adjourn —
A motion to adjourn was made and seconded. Motion carried. The meeting concluded at 8:30 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Ghida S. Neukirch
Assistant Village Manager
