Chair Report
Chairperson Linda Rosen congratulated the Village on its newly formatted newsletter. The Arts
Commission members agreed and found the new style very readable and useable, more likely to
be saved. The Arts Commission is very grateful to the extent of coverage for its events.
Commissioner's Reports
No report.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Plans for the May 21 st concert are underway. This will be the Band's 5th spring performance.
Tickets are on sale at Village Hall.
AC volunteers for 5/21 include Rosen, Schneider, Weissman, and Neukirch.
Limelight Cafe
Plans for the May 19th Limelight Cafe are underway. The schedule is full with band's performing
from 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm. AC volunteers for the event include Pervos, Alaynick, Herman,
Weissman and Neukirch. For future events, there is a preference for scheduling only until 10:30
pm.
Community Calendar Program
Evan Hill Design is working on the calendar.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Art Festival
Plans for the art festival are underway. Commissioner Greenberg asked for volunteers to select
public art. She described the process for judging the art. There is a $2600 budget*. Judging takes
place at 9:00 am on Saturday. Judges look at every booth with a critical eye for public display.
The three judges then get together and make their recommendation to the Village.
Announcement of the selected art is made at the Sunday awards breakfast. Commissioners
Greenberg, Alaynick, and Weissman will be this year's judges.
* Neukirch correction : the budget for the program is based on the number of artists at the festival; the
Village receives $20 per artists as part of a registration fee. The revenue is used to offset a portion of the
Village's costs to coordinate the program and for the art purchase program.
Village's 50th Anniversary Committee Update
No report.
Old Business
Kids' Talent Night
It was agreed to move forward with a Kids' Talent Night. The date of Friday night, October 20 was
selected, pending availability of a location, with the time tentatively set for 7:30 pm — 9:00 pm.
Local schools will be contacted to see about the availability of an auditorium and custodial
services. A nominal fee (perhaps $3.00) will be charged for admission. Snacks will be served.
Auditions for the children will take place, in a public place as yet undetermined, on a Saturday or
Sunday a couple weeks before the event. Commissioners were asked to think of names for the
event suggested at previous meetings.
New Business
2008 Village 50th Anniversary
The Arts Commission would like a presence during the 2008 50th anniversary celebration of
Buffalo Grove. Ideas were generated about creating a piece of permanent artwork, preferably
displayed outdoors on the Village campus, which would be a compilation of many residents'
efforts. Discussion led to the possibility of a piece of artwork made from a grouping of banners,
bricks, tiles, rocks, and/or flowers. Residents could be asked during the 2008 July Art Fest to buy
one of these items, which would then be one piece among many for this larger work. Money
raised would cover not only cost of material, but would go toward a scholarship or donation not
yet determined. Several commissioners will bring in samples or pricing of the suggested items.
Artist Reception/Wine & Cheese Event
Robyn Kove discussed the possibility of hosting a "Mingle & Meet" open to the public on a
weekday evening at Forest Grove Health Club, where artists would attend and display their work
and wine and cheese would be served. The role of the Arts Commission would be to acquire the
artists. The
Commission members inquired whether having an event taking place out of Buffalo Grove was a
permissible use for this Commission.
Village Report
Painting the Village's Buffalo
June 10-11 was selected as the weekend to get the Village buffalo painted. Commissioner
Alaynick would like the Village to contact Omni Youth Services to get local children involved in
this project. Please contact Ms. Alaynick if you are able to help on this project. The Commission
wondered about the possibility of using the Public Works garage for drying and ventilation of the
buffalo overnight.
Meeting Schedule
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2006 after the Art Fest volunteer meeting.
AC meetings are typically held on the second Wednesday of each month. Meetings will be held
at Village Hall, second floor conference room, unless noted.
Adjourn
The meeting concluded at 7:41 pm. Motion by Marilyn Alaynick to adjourn, second by Sandy
Greenberg.
Sincerely,
Susan Levy
