Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7:OOPM. Linda welcomed the new commission members
Chris Gibson, Dan Olbur and returning member Sandy Greenberg.
Approval of Minutes
The motion to approve the minutes was made by Lynne Schneider and seconded by Gayle
Pervos. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
The Arts Commission Annual Report was submitted to the Village Manager's Office for submittal
to the Village Board. The new project for this past year was Little Limelight. It was a successful
project and one that the committee has decided to continue in the coming year.
The Village of Buffalo Grove was named as an All Star City for the National Anthem Project for
2006. Now that the term is completed a certificate should be sent to the Village for display.
Linda suggested that it was time for the committee to look at projects for the coming year. Some
of her suggestions were: painted buffaloes and continuing to explore the sculpture garden.
Linda is requesting feedback from the committee for other suggestions for the coming year.
Chris Gibson, committee member and a member of the Indian Trails Library staff, is seeking
artists to display their work in the library. Susan Mann made a motion to have a joint venture
with the Arts Commission and the Indian Trails Library to promote local artists. The motion was
seconded by Sandy Greenberg. The motion was unanimously approved. Chris will be doing an
article for the Village Newsletter to see if she can get some interest from the local artists. The
committee is also exploring having the same type of program at the Buffalo Grove Health and
Fitness Center.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Carol Berman reported that Bonnie Gold had informed her that the Band Surveys were to be
distributed to the band members at their practice session on January 18th. The surveys are to be
returned to Ghida Neukirch by February 2nd
Lynne Schenieder reported that the four (4) Christmas Concerts were very well received. The
band is practicing for the coming spring concert which will be held on April 28h
Limelight Cafe
Gayle Pervos noted that there were five (5) groups signed up for the next Limelight Cafe, Friday
February 2nd. The volunteers for the evening are Chris Gibson, Sandy Greenberg, Barbara
Herman and Carol Berman. Bob Boxer will be doing the sound for this program.
Gayle mentioned that Ghida Neukirch had written a letter to the Buffalo Grove High School
newspaper thanking them for the article on the Limelight Cafe but correcting a statement that
indicated the event was sponsored by the Buffalo Grove Park District. Carol suggested that we
provide a display board at the entrance of Limelight with just "Limelight Cafe— sponsored by the
Buffalo Grove Arts Commission." Gayle will have this display board made for the next event.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Art Festival
The committee was asked to recommend a special project for the Art Festival that is designed
to appeal to all ages. After much discussion the committee suggested that we explore Project
Linus for this event. This organization provides quilts and blankets to sick children in local
hospitals. The local chapter of Project Linus would provide the muslin squares (or we could
purchase them) and the markers for participants to make a square that would then be
incorporated with others to form a quilt. The organization takes the squares, has the quilts
made, and then does the distribution to local hospitals. A motion was made to forward this
suggestion to staff by Lynne Schneider and seconded by Barbara Herman. The motion was
unanimously approved.
The committee felt that there should be a chairperson for this event and the committee should
look to previous Art Fair volunteers to chair this position. For more information on Project Linus
go to www.orasites.com/ii/r)roiectlinuschicago .
Village's 50th Anniversary Committee Update
Barbara Herman had no report from the committee. The next meeting of the 50th Anniversary
Committee is February 1 .
The Arts Commission felt that their 50th Anniversary Project would be the Rock Garden. The
rocks would then be placed alongside the Youth Center in the area of the Buffalo.
OLD BUSINESS
Tribute Cards
Linda Rosen presented three (3) designs for the proposed Tribute Cards that were done by a
local artist. The committee felt that the proposed cards, although very well done, were too
colorful and not appropriate for either a "In Memory of.." or"In Honor of..." cards.
The committee discussed the concept and how the cards were to be distributed to the
community. Bruce Kahn, Trustee Liaison, expressed concerns as to whether the Village Board
would approve of this fundraiser.
Linda will be taking the cards back to the artist for redesign and then come back to the
committee with a cost for the cards and a plan as to how the cards are to be distributed.
Consideration will be given for the Arts Commission to sell cards that may be used for any
purpose — not just "in memory" or"in honor'. The cards could be sold at the BG Invitational Fine
Art Festival as a fundraiser. The Commission will review this program at the next meeting, and
then provide a written report to the Village Board for consideration.
NEW BUSINESS
Illinois Arts Council (IAC) Grants — Gayle Pervos contacted the IAC to see if there are funds
available for Arts Commission projects other than the current grant that is provided to the
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. There are two types of grants: performance grants and
program grants. Gayle is waiting for the IAC to provide the information for the 2007 grants on
their website. Once the information is available, Gayle and the committee will determine if the
Arts Commission can apply for funds from this organization.
Art Scholarship Program — Lynne Schneider asked for two (2) volunteers from the Arts
Commission for the Chamber Art Scholarship Committee. Sandy Greenberg and Susan Mann
volunteered. The committee recommended that the applicants also submit at least three (3)
digital photos of their work. The committee also suggested advertising this scholarship in the
Village newsletter, local newspapers and on Channel 6.
Village Report
Carol checked with the new commission members to see that all their forms are submitted to
the Village.
Meeting Schedule
The next meeting of the Arts Commission has been rescheduled to February 7, 2007.
Adjourn
The meeting concluded at 8:10PM. A motion for adjournment was made by Barbara Herman
and second by Dan Olbur. The motion was unanimously approved.
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
