Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7:03PM.
Approval of Minutes
The motion to approve the January 17, 2007 minutes was made by Barbara Herman and
seconded by Bonnie Gold. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda Rosen read a card that was sent by the Cellini Family to thank the Arts Commission for
the donation of the proceeds of the October Limelight Cafe to the Elliott Cellini Healing Fund.
A Certificate of Recognition was received by the Village for the National Anthem Project. Linda
stated that the Village should be very proud of this achievement since there were very few
communities nationwide to receive this honor. A motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick and
seconded by Dan Olbur to request that the Village hang this certificate in a prominent place in
Village Hall. The motion was unanimously approved.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Bonnie Gold reported that the band survey has been completed and responses were received
from thirteen (13) members. The survey results were complied and sent to the Arts Commission
members by Ghida Neukirch, Deputy Village Manager. The survey appeared to indicate that the
members have a more positive outlook on the band experience than they had in the previous
survey. One of the comments was that the band may be outgrowing their space at Meridian
School. Bonnie started that any changes in location would be addressed by the band board.
The 6th annual band concert will be held on Saturday, April 28th at Stevenson High School. The
program, "Something Old, Something New..." will feature Gene Pokorny, Principal Tuba of the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as the guest performer. Not only will Mr. Pokorny play with the
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band for the entire program but will also do a feature presentation of
"Tubby the Tuba" with Elliott Hartstein, guest narrator. Lynne Schneider will do the programs for
this concert.
Linda Rosen mentioned that Bonnie should check the costs of the performance at Stevenson
High School. She indicated that they have recently raised their rates for the use of the facility.
Limelight Cafe
Gayle Pervos thanked the volunteers who worked that evening. This evening the performers
were not as well behaved as previous Limelight performances. One group broke a microphone,
one performer broke a guitar as part of the act and there were problems with performers taking
off their shirts even though this was something that was against the rules. It was discussed that
for the next Limelight the performer in charge of the group would have to sign an agreement that
they would follow the rules and be responsible for any issues that arise from their performance.
Gayle is working with the group who was responsible for the broken microphone to recover the
replacement cost.
The cost to purchase our own sound equipment is to be explored by Dan Olbur. Currently Bob
Boxer has been providing the equipment but the committee did not feel that they could continue
to prevail on his generosity. It was discussed that the commission would need a PA system,
amplifier, two (2) speakers and two (2) microphones at a cost of approximately $1,500. Dan is
going to look into used equipment and other avenues to see if this cost could be reduced. The
committee felt that this equipment could support other programs such a Little Limelight and the
Art Fair.
Gayle asked the committee members to review the concept of Limelight Cafe. Originally it was
designed to promote various musical talents of high school students. Currently it has evolved
into a venue of bands with similar types of music. She asked for committee members to come
up with some new ideas for the coming year.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Art Festival
The committee approved Project Linus as the special project for the art tent. Linda Rosen has
two volunteers who will handle this project for the commission, Laura Ander and Lori Lapping.
Ann Marrin, Office of the Village Manager, is exploring the total cost that the Village will incur as
a result of the project. This project would be considered as the main, or a supplement program
in the Family Art Tent.
Carol Berman reported that staff would like the Art Commission to provide goodie bags for the
artists. The committee discussed the concept and approved the idea with village maps,
restaurant coupons, and other items that would be of interest to the artists in the short time they
are in our community. The motion to approve this program was made by Marilyn Alaynick and
seconded by Dan Olbur. The motion was unanimously approved.
The committee discussed the proposed ice sculpture and felt that the $2,500 cost of the
program was too expensive. They felt that if the Village could raise the funds it would be better
used for another type of project. The committee discussed the solicitation of sponsors and did
not feel comfortable in that role.
Village's 50th Anniversary Committee Update
No Report.
Old Business
Tribute Cards — Linda Rosen provide several samples of the revised artwork for the Tribute
Cards. Carol Berman reported on a quote from Aim Business Printers for $315 for 3K 4" x 6"
cards with envelopes (two color printing on three surfaces). The committee requested that Carol
also get a price on the packaging of these cards in groups of 10. All proceeds from the Tribute
Cards would go to art programming in the Village.
Trustee Braiman felt that the committee should get a legal opinion from William Raysa to
determine if this was tax deductible for those who purchased cards.
Linda Rosen felt that she would be prepared to provide a business plan at the next meeting that
would then be sent to Village staff and then forwarded to the Village Board for approval.
Illinois Arts Council — Gayle Pervos reported that the guidelines governing program grants do
not apply to the projects that the Arts Commission is currently working on but do apply to the
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. This is the type of award the band received from the IAC last
year.
The commission will be looking into possibly applying for a project grant for a specific Arts
Commission project. The guidelines for this type of grant are being explored by staff.
New Business
Dan Olbur suggested that the Arts Commission sponsor a program similar to Evanston's First
Night. After much discussion the concept was defined as a family program, to be held on New
Year's Eve, with entertainment and food. The location suggested was the Arboretum Club. The
committee discussed this concept and then asked Dan to provide information on costs and
programming.
Village Report
Carol Berman reminded the commissioners of the Community Volunteer Reception on Sunday,
February 25h. She also thanked those who submitted articles for the March/April edition of the
Village Newsletter.
Carol also reminded the committee members that the Village has the ability to make signs and
banners in-house for any future projects. This would eliminate the cost of having them done at a
commercial facility.
Meeting Schedule
The committee agreed to change the date of the next meeting to March 7th due to conflicting
schedules with several committee members.
Adjourn
The meeting concluded at 8:20PM. Motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Dan
Olbur. The motion was unanimously approved.
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
