Approval of Minutes A motion was made to approve the minutes from the 6/18/08 meeting by Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Fred Weissman. The motion was unanimously approved. Chair Report The chairperson, Linda Rosen, introduced the guests that were attending this meeting and thanked them for their interest in the Arts Commission. Linda read the notes that were sent to the Arts Commission from the family of Roy Gibson and Hospice Northeastern Illinois thanking the commission members for their donation in memory of Roy Gibson. She also thanked everyone for all their work on the Art Festival. It was a wonderful festival and each and every person on the commission had an active part in the success of the project. Discussion with Trustee Liaison of Future Goals and Programs for the Arts Commission Linda recapped the projects that the Arts Commission has provided to the community over the past years. The question that was put to our Trustee Liaison, Jeff Braiman, was "what type of programming would the Village Board like to see from the Arts Commission?" Linda questioned the viability of the commission and our future expectations. Jeff Braiman stated that the Village Board feels that the Arts Commission is a very effective organization and one that has planned wonderful programs for people of all ages within the community. Although the 50th Anniversary Sculpture Project was not funded the Village Board appreciated the effort put forth by the commission. Trustee Braiman suggested that the Arts Commission advertise on Channel 6, in water bills and in the Village Newsletter to advertise their programs and seek additional volunteers. He would also like to see the Arts Commission develop a "Business Plan" for future programs to submit to the Village Board. This would include details on the project, how it will be funded and what is required from the Village, both in staff support and financially. Depending on the project and amount the Village could possibly assist the commission in funding some projects. Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival, July 19-20, 2008 Carol Berman presented the report that was compiled by Ghida Neukirch, Deputy Village Manager, on the recap of the 2008 festival. Additional comments to Ghida's report was to not have the Paint a Car program since it does interfere with the Family Art Tent projects. Having the Little Limelight contestants perform was a huge success. Let's try to expand it for one hour on Saturday and Sunday. The committee strongly recommends that we only allow Little Limelight contestants to perform. The committee felt very strongly that the quality of the artists was somewhat diminished with the date conflict with the Ann Arbor Art Fair. The Art Fair in Ann Arbor in 2009 is scheduled for the week of 7/15-7/18. Fred Weissman made a motion that "The Art Commission shall inform Amdur Productions that we do not want to hold our Art Festival at the same time of the Ann Arbor Festival." The motion was seconded by Laura Ander and passed unanimously. A discussion was held to move the Preview Party to an outside venue, possibly at Rotary Green, featuring the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. Lynn Schneider, Executive Director of the Buffalo Grove Chamber of Commerce and Arts Commission member, felt that we could not depend on an outside event due to weather. She will explore moving the venue to another site. The committee felt that the food and entertainment were wonderful but disappointed that more artists were not present. Lynn will work with Ghida Neukirch to explore the possibility of modifying this project. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band The Fall Concert, Celebrations and Commemorations, will be held on October 26th at Buffalo Grove High School at 7:OOPM. The admission fee is $10 in advance, $12 at the door and $8 for students and seniors. Jim Osters will do the cover for the program and Lynn Schneider will do the programs. Carol reviewed the results of the Annual Band Survey with the commission. Some of the topics that were reviewed were: - Types of Questions Reviewed on the Survey. The Arts Commission felt that the Band Board should be queried if they had any specific questions to ask of the members. - Review of Survey Reponses - Board Attendance - Constitution/By Laws - Membership The committee discussed the possibility of replacing the existing announcer for the concerts. Little Limelight The next Little Limelight is scheduled at Tripp School. Auditions will be held on 9/26/08 and the performance is 10/17/08. The flyer will be sent to the Buffalo Grove school districts for distribution to students. An article will appear in the next Village Newsletter. Audition times will be in 5 minutes intervals. Performers will be asked to keep their program down to 3 minutes. Lynn Schneider will be doing the programs for this project. It was suggested that a note be added to the program that the Arts Commission is seeking members for the commission. Carol Berman will obtain approval for the school districts to distribute the flyer at the schools. Limelight Cafe The only Limelight Cafe performance for the next season is scheduled for 4/24/09 at eSkape. Village's 50th Anniversary Committee Update Barbara Herman was not able to attend the meeting but submitted a written report on the Ice Cream Social that was held on August 3rd at Stevenson High School. Approximately 210 people attend the joint concert with the Buffalo Grove Singers and the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. After the concert ice cream was provided by Kaleidodcoops. Both the BG Singers and the band provided a wonderful performance to the community. Several members of the commission expressed their displeasure with the piece that was commission for the 50th Anniversary and preformed for the first time at the Ice Cream Social. Note Cards Three packages of note cards were sold at the Art Festival. Laura Ander, chairperson of this project, suggested that once all the existing cards are sold we return to the original concept of tribute cards. Old Business No report. New Business Bonnie Gold suggested an intergenerational program for the commission called Hearts for the Arts. This program would be geared for very small children through grandparents. The idea is to have different entertainers —singers, jugglers, etc. — that would perform in different rooms possibly in the Alcott Center (with permission from the Buffalo Grove Park District). Some members that volunteered to assist Bonnie in exploring this project were Marilyn Alaynick, Laura Ander and Stellie Friedman. Bonnie recently was in Wheeling to hear Justin Roberts who does wonderful musical performances for children. He charges $3,500 and requires a large venue such as the auditoriums at Buffalo Grove or Stevenson High Schools. It was decided that we would look at him for a future program. Laura Ander made a motion for"The Arts Commission to sponsor Hearts of the Arts in February of 2009." Fred Weissman seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously. Bonnie also mentioned that she was in Park Ridge recently and saw the rainbow sculptures they have throughout their community. This is similar to the Buffalos on Parade that we sponsored several years ago. Bonnie displayed pictures of some of the rainbows she had seen. Cost of each rainbow was $750. Bonnie will try to obtain additional information on this program. Village Report Carol informed the commission about the new Village website. She requested that the members go on the Arts Commission site and make suggestions for additional information that can be posted. It was suggested that we add pictures that were taken at the last Little Limelight performance. Steve Bulmash supplied the Village with a disk of the pictures he took that day. Pictures from the Symphonic Band concert should be sent to the Illinois Arts Council for inclusion in their next Annual Report. Carol requested a volunteer to review the current Annual Report from the Illinois Arts Council. It lists the various organizations the IAC supports and the amount of the grants. Sandy Greenberg volunteered to review the documents to see if we can get ideas for the types of programs they fund. Meeting Schedule The next meeting is scheduled for 9/10/08. Adjourn The meeting concluded at 8:35PM. The motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Laura Ander. The motion was unanimously approved. Sincerely, Carol Berman Staff Liaison cc: Jeff Berman, Trustee Liaison Jeff Braiman, Trustee Liaison Ghida Neukirch, Deputy Village Manager
