On Monday, March 161h Linda along with Jeff Braiman and Amy Amdur taped a program on the Art Festival for the Village cable channel called People, Places and Issues. There were five new artists who showcased their work and will be part of the Art Festival this year. Since Marilyn Alaynick was not able to attend the annual volunteer reception Linda presented her gift for five (5) years of service to the Arts Commission. Discussion with Trustee Liaison on Future Goals and Programs for the Arts Commission Linda read Jeff Berman's email of November 20, 2008 which discussed possible projects for the commission. Carol Berman will work with the Village IT Department to determine how we could set up a Face Book page and update it on a continual basis. This suggestion was developed in hopes of gaining younger people to the commission and participation in our projects. It was suggested that the Symphonic Band could also participate in a People, Places and Issues program to make residents aware of this great asset to the community. Fred Weissman volunteered to explore the idea of a holiday celebration in Buffalo Grove for the coming year. Some of the ideas the commission members suggested were a tree lighting, an "official" lighting of the lights on the municipal campus, holiday sign-a-long, etc. Fred will present a report at the next meeting. Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival Family Art Tent - the main project this year is to have the children paint unfinished tiles which they would take home. Laura Ander and Lori Lapping will co-chair this project. In addition, Lori will try to obtain donation of pretzel logs that the children could dip in chocolate and sprinkles. Betty Haag, of the Betty Haag Academy of Music, has agreed to have her Suzuki Strings play on Saturday in the 4:00-5:OOPM time slot on the Main Stage. On Sunday, from 4:00-5:OOPM we will feature some Little Limelight performers. Linda and Gayle Pervos will coordinate the groups. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Future Symphonic Band concerts: Spring 2009 Concert Series March 22nd - 2:OOPM Annual Small Ensemble Concert, Vernon Area Library— Free Admission April 25h - 7:OOPM 8h Annual Formal Spring Concert, Stevenson High School Last week the band conducted a concert for students and staff of Meridian School to thank them for the use of their facility. In addition the band made a contribution to the Music Department to enable them to purchase a piece of music for the students. The question of a Band Survey was discussed. Bonnie Gold said that Howard Green, conductor, was agreeable to the survey if the board could develop the questions. The Arts Commission felt this was a positive move by the board. Carol will discuss this with Ghida Neukich, Deputy Village Manager. Volunteers for the April 25th concert are Carol Berman and Lynne Schneider. Linda will not be able to attend and introduce the concert. Carol said she would take her place. Little Limelight Gayle had suggested tentative date for the Little Limelight program of October 2nd for the auditions with a performance scheduled for October 16th. Gayle with check to see if the dates are available with the school district. Limelight Cafe Limelight Cafe is scheduled for May 1st at eSkape. Currently there are four (4) bands signed up to perform. Carol had mentioned that there is one band who has asked to perform but only one member is a high school student and all others are 19. Gayle, who chairs this program, said we had an issued with older kids last year and will hold to the concept of high school students only. Volunteers for the event are Marilyn Alaynick, Barbara Herman, Sandy Greenberg, Fred Weissman and Carol Berman. Note Cards No report. Old Business Currently there are eleven (11) volunteers on the Arts Commission who have been appointed by Elliot Hartstein, Village President. Linda began a discussion of the optimal number of members for the commission. The members present agreed that there should not be a limit on the number people on the commission. However, to be part of the commission interested people should attend meetings, participate in programs, and actively show an interest in the work of the commission before they are appointment to the commission. New Business Linda discussed the concept proposed by Mitch and Suzi Levin, our guest artists at the last meeting, to develop a program for Flowers in the Community for 2010. An RFP would be done to solicit lawn art in the form of flowers that would grace the Village campus and then be sold at the end of the season. It was suggested that the proceeds should be divided as follows: 1/3 for the artist, 1/3 for the Arts Commission and 1/3 for a charity. Sandy Greenberg volunteered to chair this effort and develop a proposal for the Village Board's approval. In Chris Gibson's absence Carol read a report that Chris sent on a program for Artists with Disabilities. The concept for this type of program came from Jeff Braiman, one of our Trustee Liaisons. This program would be held on a Saturday or Sunday in November at either Village Hall or a possible Buffalo Grove office building. Chris has contacted a number of organizations that work with the disabled, including Little City, to see who may be interested in participating in this event. She received a lot of interest in the program. The committee hopes to partner with the Commission on Residents with Disabilities on this event. The commission will seek Village Board approval for this project. Village Report At the last meeting Lynne Schneider discussed the benches along Church Street that have faded. It was determined that staff would assess the condition of the benches. If they are structurally sound they will be painted by either the organizations or companies who originally sponsored the bench or by staff. If the benches are not in good condition they will be removed. Chris Gibson had proposed a joint venture with the Indian Trials Library on a program featuring a Buffalo Grove Writer and a Wheeling Photographer. The committee felt they are currently working on a number of projects and decided not to pursue this opportunity. Meeting Schedule The next meeting is rescheduled for April 15th. The following meeting will be May 27th which will be the Art Festival volunteer meeting followed by the Arts Commission meeting. There will be no meeting in June but then one on July 8h Adjourn The meeting concluded at 8:19PM. The motion was made by Bonnie Gold and seconded by Lynne Schneider. The motion was unanimously approved. Sincerely, Carol Berman Staff Liaison cc: Jeff Berman, Trustee Liaison Jeff Braiman, Trustee Liaison Ghida Neukirch, Deputy Village Manager
