Chair Report
Linda welcomed our guests: Judith Katz and Fran Sachs.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Family Art Tent - the main project this year is to have the children paint unfinished tiles which
they would take home and frosted pretzel logs. Laura Ander has purchased the stamps and ink
pads from Jo-Ann Fabrics when they had a sale. Ray & Sons may donate some matt finished
tiles. Laura has also requested the ability to contact local developers to see if they have extra
tiles they could donate. She has also contacted Home Economist to see if they could donate
the pretzel logs. Laura has requested the committee to see if they can get some youth
volunteers to help with the Family Art Tent.
Carol reported that Arthur J. Rogers has donated $400 to cover the cost of the rental of a four
seat golf cart which will be used to transport handicap individuals during the Art Festival plus
and additional donations was received for $500 from Allstate. Fred Weissman said he was
going to talk to the new owners of Buffalo Restaurant to see if they would consider a donation.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
"Exotic Europe and the Great American Songbook" is the theme for the next concert to
be held on April 25th - 7.00PM at Stevenson High School. Lynne Schenider, Judy Katz and
Carol Berman volunteered to assist with the concert. Carol Berman, in Linda Rosen's absence,
will make the introduction at the beginning of the concert.
The band survey was discussed by the committee. Historically the survey is done after the
spring concert. Whereas Bonnie Gold said that Howard Green, conductor, was agreeable to the
survey, if the board could assist in the development of the questions, there seems to be
resistance to conduct a survey this year. Board meetings are being held and Bonnie and Sandy
Greenberg and not invited. The Band Board also feels that there should be only one
representative from the Arts Commission to the board and has resisted the Sandy's presence at
meetings. Her name does not appear on minutes and she does not receive any
correspondence on their activities.
Bonnie also discussed the problems with attendance at the meetings. The committee felt that
there should be a commitment from members and, once again, felt there should be a
membership fee to belong to the band.
A question came up on the new by-laws that were being drafted by the band board. Any new
by-laws must have Village approval.
Volunteers for the April 25th concert are Carol Berman and Lynne Schneider. Linda will not be
able to attend and introduce the concert. Carol said she would take her place.
Little Limelight
The tentative dates for the Little Limelight program are October 2nd for the auditions with a
performance scheduled for October 16th. Gayle is attempting to check these dates with the
Stevenson and Buffalo Grove High School calendars to see if there are any conflicts. However,
Stevenson High School has not established their calendar for the 2009-2010 school year.
Limelight Cafe
Limelight Cafe is scheduled for May 1st at eSkape. Currently there are four (4) bands signed up
to perform. Carol had mentioned that there is one band who has asked to perform but only one
member is a high school student and all others are 19. Gayle, who chairs this program, said we
had an issued with older kids last year and will hold to the concept of high school students only.
Volunteers for the event are Marilyn Alaynick, Barbara Herman, Sandy Greenberg, Fred
Weissman and Carol Berman.
Note Cards
No report.
Old Business
None
New Business
Sandy Greenberg met with Mitch and Suzi Levin to discuss how we can enhance arts within the
community. There were many ideas suggested but the one that seemed to interest the
commission was to have a "flower garden" of sculpture flowers that could be sold at a spring
event. The concept suggested was to get either donations or consignment pieces that could be
sold with a portion of the profits going to a charity. This would be in conjunction with a sale of
live flowers from either Leider's or another plant supplier. A suggestion was to have the sale in
the PW parking lot. Sandy will get other commission members to help and provide a report at
the next meeting.
On April 22nd Carol will meet with the Citizen's With Disabilities Committee to discuss the
proposed program for Artists with Disabilities. Chris Gibson, chairperson for this project, will
also present her findings at the next meeting.
Village Report
Carol will have someone from staff check the structural soundness of the benches. If they are
fine it was suggested that we contract the original sponsors to see if they want to repaint the
benches.
Meeting Schedule
The next meeting is rescheduled for May 27th with the Art Festival volunteer meeting starting at
6:OOPM.
Adjourn
The meeting concluded at 8:17PM. The motion was made by Bonnie Gold and seconded by
Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously approved.
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
