Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the 4/15/09 meeting by Lynne Schneider and
seconded Marilyn Alaynick. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda welcomed our two (2) new Trustee Liaisons Lisa Stone and Steve Trilling. She also
wanted to congratulate the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band on a wonderful spring concert.
On behalf of the Arts Commission Linda offered condolences to Marilyn Alaynick for the loss of
her husband and to Lynne Schneider on the loss of her father.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Family Art Tent — Projects for the Family Art Tent are tiles that the children can decorate with
stamp pads, pretzel rods which will be decorated with icing and sprinkles and a book the kids
can color and put together called "Exploring Art/Exploring My World." Laura and Lori,
chairpersons for this event, suggested that the tiles could be decorated with paints, glazed and
then used as a mosaic on the Village campus. This idea will be explored.
Welcome Bags for Artists — Lynne will work with local businesses to obtain products to put in
the bags such as band aids, sunscreen and other items that might be of use during the festival.
The bags will also contain a map of Buffalo Grove, list of restaurants in the community, a
Community Guide and other valuable information. Lynne was also going to try and get local
business to agree to provide coupons that can be used that weekend. Barbara will contact the
Bank of Buffalo Grove to see if they will donate the bags. Carol will schedule volunteers to get
together to assemble the bags before the festival and deliver them to the Art Festival office.
Sunday Breakfast — The commission members were extremely disappointed that Amdur
Productions canceled the breakfast. The commissioners felt this was one of the high points of
the festival. Getting the artists together, having a group from the BG Symphonic Band to play
and presenting the festival awards was a wonderful event. The question was asked if Amdur
Productions has eliminated the breakfast from all the festivals. Lynne will check with other
communities such as Lincolnshire and Highland Park.
The commission felt that the breakfast was important but did not want to take it away from the
Town Center area. Other suggestions that were made were to have the Dunkin Donuts van
come to Town Center, have a picnic style continental breakfast in the Rotary Green area or to
ask one of the other restaurants to sponsor this event. Lisa Stone said she was going to ask
Bill Feldgreber of eSkape to sponsor this event.
The commission discussed the issue of not having tents for the youth artists due to the high
cost of the rental. It was suggested that we try to get a local group to donate their tent(s) for this
event. Suggestions were the Buffalo Grove Park District, the BG Fitness Center, local banks or
kid camps. It was also suggested to put the kids along the area in front of India House to get
them closer to the main stage area. If no tents can be obtained the artists should be notified to
bring their own umbrella or other device to shade their table.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Bonnie reported that the spring concert was very successful and attendance was approximately
500 people. The fall concert will be held at Buffalo Grove High School and the proposed date is
Sunday, November 8th. This date has not been confirmed.
Howard Green, Symphonic Band Conductor, is attempting to start a jazz band.
The annual survey to band members is out and responses are due by May 29th. To-date only 8
responses have been received but the Village will send a reminder to the band members to
complete and return the surveys to Ghida Neukirch, Deputy Village Manager.
The commission was asked by staff to provide input on a proposed increase in the honorarium
paid to Howard Green. The Band Board recommended an increase in the annual stipend from
$4,410 to $7,000. This would be Mr. Green's first increase since the inception of the band in
2001. Commission members felt that he works very hard and deserves an increase but the
proposed increase was too high. It appears that the band had made a profit of approximately
$3,000 per year since its inception. The proposed increase would bring them close to a point
where they may not be profitable. After much discussion, a motion was made by Lynne
Schneider to suggest an increase the honorarium to $5,500. Laura Ander seconded the motion.
The motion passed unanimously. The commission also suggested that the Band Board may
want to look at the honorarium on an annual basis.
Neither Bonnie nor Sandy will be able to attend the next Band Board meeting on June 4h. Chris
will represent the AC at the meeting at 6:30PM at Meridian School.
Little Limelight
The tentative dates for the Little Limelight program are October 2nd for the auditions with a
performance scheduled for October 16th. Gayle is attempting to confirm these dates with the
school.
Limelight Cafe
Limelight Cafe was held on May 1st at eSkape. It was a wonderful event with a profit of
$382.00. The performers were great and there were no problems with the attendees.
Gayle suggested that we continue on our schedule of having one Limelight Cafe to be held in
the spring.
Old Business
Sculpture Flowers — Sandy reported that she and her committee were working on this project
and would present a report at the next meeting.
Artists with Disabilities Event— Chris discussed her discussion with representatives of Little City
who were interested in participating in an event showcasing the work of disabled artists. The
commission thought this would be a good event to partner with the Commission for Residents
with Disabilities. Carol attended the April 22nd meeting of the CRD to discuss this project. The
CRD members felt that a stand alone event would be difficult to draw attendees and thought it
would be better to coordinate it with another Village event. They felt the ideal partnership was
with the annual Art Festival. However, an alternate suggestion was to partner with the Buffalo
Grove Symphonic Band to hold the event in conjunction with the fall concert. The commission
members agreed with this suggestion. Chris will discuss this concept with the Band Board
when she attends their June meeting.
New Business
None
Village Report
Carol had a staff member check the structural integrity of the benches along Church Rd. and
they were found to need additional bracing and painting. She will check with the original
sponsors of the benches to see if they would like to repaint them. If not, the AC will take over
the project.
Ethics statements were distributed and completed by all those in attendance.
Carol read an email from Shirley Madigan, Chairman of the Illinois Arts Council, who discussed
the problems with the State of Illinois budget and the possible reductions in money provided to
the IAC for grants to fund arts programming. The commission decided, as individuals, to send
emails and call local representatives to request that they continue funding this organization.
The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band has received a grant from the IAC for the last several
years.
The Village of Libertyville is sponsoring a Passport program to encourage the community to
shop in Libertyville. For people who make purchases within their community they can have their
passport stamped and win various prizes. Staff had made the suggestion that this might be a
good idea to promote the Town Center businesses in coordination with the Art Festival. The
committee felt that this would be time consuming to develop and they were already involved in a
number of programs associated with the festival.
Adjourn
The next meeting is rescheduled for July 8h
The meeting concluded at 8:25PM. The motion was made by Lori Lapping and seconded by
Gayle Pervos. The motion was unanimously approved.
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
