Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the 5/27/09 meeting by Lynne Schneider and
seconded Gayle Pervos. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band for their wonderful performance on the
4" of July. She also informed the committee that we received a thank you from Marilyn Alaynick
on the donation that was made by the commission in memory of her husband. Linda also
thanked Sandy Greenberg and her committee on the work that they have done on the new
spring program on flowers. She also updated the commission on the health of Bonnie Gold's
daughter Katie.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Family Art Tent — The pretzels were donated by Long Grove Confectionery. Lori and Laura will
purchase the frosting and sprinkles along with little cups and plates for this project. We will have
plastic gloves available for the staff that is working on this project.
Welcome Bags for Artists — Volunteers will gather at Village Hall on 7/16/09 at 9:OOAM to
assemble the bags.
Sunday Breakfast — The Buffalo Restaurant, Panera Bread, Original Bagel and Bialy, Deerfield
Bakery and Continental Restaurant are donating items for the breakfast. The host of the event is
Buffalo Wings and Rings.
Celebration of Art — The Buffalo Grove Chamber of Commerce will host a preview party for the
festival on 7/16/09 at the Indeck building. The winner of last year's Art Scholarship will be there
along with other local artists displaying their work.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
In Bonnie's absence Linda discussed the concept of charging band members to be part of the
Symphonic Band. Although other communities do charge members, the commission felt that in
this economy the band should not charge a membership fee. This was qualified on the basis
that they are self-sustaining. A motion was made by Fred Weissman and seconded by Lynne
Schneider. The motion was unanimously passed.
The commission reviewed they proposed changes to the band's by-laws and the only change
that was suggest was to change the term "membership" in the document since they do not have
to pay a membership fee.
In regards to the band survey the commission felt that although there was not a large response
it was a more favorable survey than those in past years.
The question also arose as to if the band members sign hold harmless waivers to the Village in
case of any accidents that might occur. Carol Berman will investigate this concern.
Sandy will be able to attend the next Band Board meeting on August 6th at 6:30PM at Meridian
School.
Little Limelight
The confirmed dates for the Little Limelight program are October 2nd for the auditions with a
performance scheduled for October 16th.
Laura Ander noted that there is a Deerfield band called Non-Profit or Not for Profit which plays
for non-profit agencies for free. There is also a children's band that is associated with the group.
This may be a group we might be interested in using in the future.
Old Business
Sculpture Flowers — Sandy and her committee — Laura Ander, Barbara Herman and Fran
Sachs — presented their project of Spring Flower Power. The concept was developed with the
help of Mitch and Susie Levin who are local artists.
The concept of the project was to have an art sale in May, 2010, that would be related to
flowers. The committee is looking to get artists to donate art with the proceeds to benefit the
Buddy Baseball program with some of the profits going to the Arts Commission.
The committee will review the concept on this project with Ghida Neukirch on July 9th and then
forwarded it to the Village Board for their approval.
Artists with Disabilities Event — This will be a joint venture with the CRD and the Symphonic
Band. The art fair will be held in conjunction with the Fall Symphonic Band concert at Buffalo
Grove High School.
Chris Gibson will be meeting with the CRD to confirm details of this event at their July 22nd
meeting. She reviewed her worksheet which discussed the details of the event. The Arts
Commission had suggestions regarding set-up, groups to contact, etc.
Carol noted that the Symphonic Band approved the concept but was concerned that it did not
interfere with their bake sale. This event could bring more people to the concert along with a
large number of people viewing and hopefully purchasing the artwork.
