Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the 9/09/09 meeting by Barbara
Herman and seconded by Lori Lapping. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda welcomed Fran Sachs and Steve Bulmash to the Arts Commission. She also
thanked Lynne Schneider for her work on the programs for both Little Limelight and the
Fall Symphonic Band Concert and Chris Gibson for her work on Unique Expressions.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
The 2010 festival is scheduled for 7/17 & 7/18 which will be a week before the Ann
Arbor festival.
Carol Berman discussed the meeting she attended with Ghida Neukirch, Amy Amdur
and Alana from Amdur staff.
Some additional comments from the commission are:
• the possibility of having a Taste of Buffalo Grove but felt that it would
conflict with the merchants of Town Center.
• Explore the possibility of moving the fest in the center east which would
provide more space for the food tents and provide a location for the Family
Art Tent.
• Send a letter to the artists prior to the event requesting a donation for a
future project like Bloomin' Buffalo Grove. The commission felt they did not
want to do a silent auction in conjunction with the fest but have something at
a later date.
• Get the merchant's of Town Center more involved with the fest. Possibly
visit them directly to get their input on ideas.
• Volunteers should hand out the welcome bags on Friday night. They do not
seem to be getting to the artists and the commission felt if delivered directly to
the artists it would be a nice way to welcome them to our community.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The fall 2009 Symphonic Band Concert will be held on November 8t" at Buffalo Grove
High School. The theme of this concert is "Fire and Water ." The new Jazz Band will
debut at this concert. Concert tickets are $10 in advance at the Buffalo Grove Village
Hall (check or cash), $12 at the door, $8 at all times for seniors (55+) and students with
ID. Carol had requested that all who can to volunteer for this evening since we not only
need assistance for the concert but our special project that will be held that evening for
handicap artists. Lynne Schneider had volunteered to do the program for the
performance. Sponsors will be getting tickets for the performance.
Volunteers for the evening are Barbara, Sandy, Gayle, Fred, Marilyn, Chris, Lori Linda
and Carol.
Little Limelight
Little Limelight program is scheduled for October 16t" at Tripp School. The auditions
went well and there are a numbers of performers.
Volunteers for the 10/16 performance — Gayle, Linda, Chris, Marilyn, Barbara, Lori,
Fred, Steve and Carol. Mr. Lee will be bringing three wireless microphones.
Carol will ask Long Grove Confectionary if they would donate the chocolate roses.
Lynne Schneider had volunteered to do the program for the performance. Lori Lapping
has obtained a donation of cookies from Dorfler's.
Limelight Cafe
The date of 4/30/2010 has been established for this event at eSkape.
Bloomin' Buffalo Grove
Sandy Greenberg reported that letters were sent to artists whose names have been
collected by the committee. She will also contact Suzi Levin, local artist, to obtain
information on how we can contact other artists.
Staff will update flyers for distribution.
Artists with Disabilities Event
The art fair will be held in conjunction with the Fall Symphonic Band concert at Buffalo
Grove High School on 11/8. This is a joint venture with the Committee for Residents
with Disabilities and is called Unique Expressions .
The art fair will be held from 6:OOPM-7:OOPM, prior to the concert and also at
intermission. To-date there is one artist from Wilmette that has signed up for the
program and a representative from Arts of Life who will be bringing approximately 10-15
pieces. Chris is in contact with Little City and hopes to have representatives from their
organization.
New Business
Lynne Schneider discussed the community art program by the Village of Lisle that
featured bird baths in the community. The committee felt the "bird bath" theme was not
compatible with the Bloomin' Buffalo Grove project and felt there was an issue with the
bird baths and standing water. It was suggested to possibly look at bird houses. Fran
Sachs volunteered to explore this project.
Village Report
Carol reminded anyone who was going to the Highwood Art Festival to collect cards
from the artists for Bloomin' Buffalo Grove.
Adjourn
The next meeting is scheduled for November 11th.
The meeting concluded at 8:OOPM.
The motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Sandy Greenberg. The
motion was unanimously approved.
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
