Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the 10/14/09 meeting by Barbara
Herman and seconded by Marilyn Alaynick. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band for the wonderful concert
Sunday evening and the debut of the Buffalo Grove Jazz Band. A special thanks to the
CRD and Chris Gibson for coordinating Unique Expressions , a special program for
handicap artists which was also held in conjunction with the concert.
Bonnie Gold was happy to announce that her daughter's bone marrow transplant
worked and she is recovering from her illness. There will be additional test and
treatment but her doctor was very happy with the results of the transplant.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
No report.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The fall 2009 Symphonic Band Concert was held on 11/8 at Buffalo Grove High School.
The special event of the evening was the debut of the Jazz Band. Those in attendance
thought it was a wonderful program and extremely well attended. A special thanks to
Lynne Schneider for doing the programs.
The committee had suggestions for publicity for the Spring concert: banners through the
Village similar to those that are put up for the Art Festival; running Channel 6
programming approximately 2 months in advance that has a banner (tag) at the bottom
of the tape announcing the next concert; and having a special grandparent program
(grandparent purchases a ticket and the child gets one for free. The committee also
suggested a sign-in sheet so we know who is attending the concert and possibly get
their email addresses for future program announcements. It was also suggested to send
a DVD copy of this program to the Buffalo Grove Park District and the Rotary Club so
they can hear the Jazz Band and possibly feature them in their summer concert series.
Little Limelight
Little Limelight program was held on 10/16 at Tripp School. It appeared that both the
performers and their family and friends enjoyed the evening. Additional discussion on
the 2010 event will be held in January when Gayle Pervos will be here to discuss the
status of this program.
Limelight Cafe
The date of 4/30/2010 has been established for this event at eSkape.
Bloomin' Buffalo Grove
Sandy Greenberg reported that the committee will be meeting on Thursday, 11/19 at
11.30 in the EOC at Village Hall. The committee will discuss how to gain more pieces
for the show, review what has been donated, draft another letter to be sent to artists and
discuss how the donations will be divided between the Arts Commission and the Buddy
Baseball program.
The commission members suggested that committee contact local high schools and
junior colleges for donations along with the park district and other sources for artists. All
commission members are encouraged to send any and all ideas to Sandy for this
program.
There was some confusion if the bird house project was to be part of this event or if it
should stand alone. This concept will be discussed at the committee meeting.
Artists with Disabilities Event
Unique Expressions was held in conjunction with the Fall Symphonic Band concert at
Buffalo Grove High School on 11/8. This was a joint venture with the Committee for
Residents with Disabilities. Participating in the program was Arts for Life, Little City and
an artist Devora of Devora's Dream. It was discussed that this type of program might be
held in conjunction with the annual Art Festival. Committee members will discuss this
with Village staff and CRD.
Bird House Project
Fran Sachs reported on the cost and types of bird houses that she found. The cheapest
and one that the committee liked was from Michael's at a cost of $5.00 each. If we
purchase the houses in volume there would be a price break. It was suggested that the
houses would be distributed to artists and residents to decorate with enamel paints and
then covered with a protective clear coat finish. Fran and her committee will decide how
to incorporate this program into our schedule. An option would be to have this as part of
the Bloomin' Buffalo Grove or to have it as a stand alone project.
Fred Weissman suggested that we get the houses unassembled and use this as a
learning experience with parents or grandparents and children. His suggestion would be
to work with the kids to put the houses together and then paint them. The committee will
explore this suggestion.
