Chair Report
Carol reported that Linda wanted to thank the Bloomin' Buffalo Grove committee for all
their hard work in making this a very successful project. The program was well
attended raised a lot of money for Buddy Baseball and the Arts Commission.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival — July 17t" and 18t"
The volunteer meeting was held before the meeting. T-shirts were distributed and
volunteers signed up for their assignments. Posters were also available for distribution.
Carol Berman recapped the current progress of the festival.
The Buffalo Grove Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Celebrate Art party
on Thursday, July 15t" at the Indeck Building. Local artists will be represented at
this program.
On Friday, July 16t" the BG Jazz Band will perform at Rotary Green.
Family Art Tent — Projects for the Family Art Tent will be "paint a bird house" and
string necklaces with fruit loops and red licorice. A balloon artist, Jason Giolli,
has agreed to be part of the Family Art Tent and only work for tips. Laura Ander
and Lori Lapping will chair this event. Lori stated that they would obtain all the
necessary supplies for the project.
Unique Expressions —This program is for handicap artists. Registration is now
closed.
Youth Artists — This program will be repeated this year with ten (10) tables
available for youth artists. Registration is now closed.
Sunday Breakfast — This event will take place at India House. The Village is
currently looking for donations from the community for breakfast items.
Entertainment — Limelight performers will be asked to perform on Saturday. The
time has been changed to 10:00-11:OOAM. Carol had sent requests to three
performers with no response. Gayle Pervos, Limelight Chairperson, feels that
the time selected is too early. Fred felt that it would be better if we had it at noon
when Cirrus Falcon took a lunch break. Carol will contact the performers
personally to see if they can participate.
Art Festival Office —The new location will be 178 McHenry Rd.
Artist Bags — Lynne Schneider sent over 100 letters to local merchants asking if
they would like to participate in a coupon program. Barbara Herman was
successful in getting the Bank of Buffalo Grove to donate 170 bags. It was
determined that the bags will be distributed to the artists on Saturday morning as
a welcome gift from the Arts Commission. Volunteers to distribute the bags were
Gayle, Chris, Marilyn and Linda (volunteered by Gayle).
Arthur J Rogers & Company is an additional sponsor for this event with their
donation of $500. Their primary sponsorship will be the disability golf cart which will
enable the committee to transport people in need of assistance.
Carol will confirm cell phones numbers with the Arts Commissioners so that we can
have all numbers available for the Arts Festival.
This year Amdur Productions is planning to provide a water bottle to each artist
during the fest and will circulate a cart with a large container of water to fill these
bottles. This is in lieu of the bottles of water that were previously distributed in an
effort to "go green". The commissioners were very concerned on how this will work.
Since the walking area is not very large the commissioner did not feel that any type
of cart should be driven down the center of the fest. If the cart is driven in the back
of the fest how will the bottles then be refilled? Several of the AC members will be
attending the Lincolnshire Art Festival the weekend of 6/13 & 6/13 to get an idea of
how Amdur handles the water distribution. We do have donations of bottled water
that will be used for volunteers. Carol Berman will obtain a cooler that will house
these bottles for our personal use.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Bonnie Gold reported on the last Band Board meeting. Some of the items discussed
were:
- The band surveys have been submitted to Ghida Neukirch.
- There has not been any additional discussion about a concert for children.
- Howard would like to do a summer concert series and has asked for the
assistance of the AC and the Village to find a venue for these concerts in the
community. The Arts Commission did not feel that they could support this
concept. Since the Rotary and Buffalo Grove Park District each have weekly
concerts the commission did not feel the community would support an
additional set of concerts.
- Howard is also looking to do a 3rd major concert in 2011.
- The band is in need of trombone players.
- Upcoming events include the June 15th performance of the Jazz Band at
Willow Stream Park, July 4th at Rotary Green, Fine Art Festival and Buffalo
Grove Days.
- The date for the fall concert is set for November 7t" at Buffalo Grove High
School. The theme for this concert if fantasy, myths and heroes. The spring
2011 concert will feature Wayne and Kathy Messmer.
Bloomin' Buffalo Grove — May 22nd
Sandy Greenberg reported that the Bloomin' Buffalo Grove project was a wonderful and
very successful program. She thanked all the committee members, Arts Commission
members who assisted that day, Sharon Borstein and her son Ed, and added a special
thank you to President Hartstein and the Village trustees who attended the event.
As of today, the total profit for the program was $2,372.90. There are sixteen (16)
additional birdhouses to sell in addition to some donated art. A motion was made by
Barbara Herman, and seconded by Marilyn Alaynick, to split the profit from the event
with 60% going to the Arts Commission and 40% going to Buddy Baseball. This motion
was unanimously approved. The committee suggested that the check to Buddy
Baseball be presented by Linda Rosen, Arts Commission Chairperson, at the 7/12/10
Village Board meeting. It was suggested that the additional birdhouses could be sold at
the 6/27/10 Farmer's Market. Marilyn, Fran and Carol volunteered to work this event.
The commission felt they would like to use the funds from this project, in addition to the
funds raised by the Limelight programs, to purchase a piece of sculpture for the Village
campus. A motion was made by Sandy Greenberg, and seconded by Fran Sachs, to
set aside $1,000 from the art purchase funds at the Art Festival to be added to the
sculpture funds. It motion was unanimously approved. This will go to the Village Board
as a recommendation to purchase a piece of sculpture and also to seek their approval
to withhold this amount of money for the project.
The commission asked Carol if she would check into establishing a separate account
for the sculpture funds in case we do not purchase the piece in 2010.
