Lapping and seconded by Laura Ander. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda thanked all the Arts Commissioners for going above and beyond during the Fine
Arts Festival.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Linda reported on the meeting that was held on August 10t" with Howard Green and Jim
Osters, of the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band, and Ghida Neukirch, Carol Berman and
Linda representing the Village and the Arts Commission. The purpose of the meeting
was to discuss future programs of the band, results of the survey that was recently
completed of band members and discuss coordinated efforts of the Symphonic
Band/Village/Arts Commission.
The band has had a very successful year and a great summer concert series. The fall
concert is scheduled for November 7t" and the spring is on April 9t". Howard is looking
to do a special concert on Sunday, September 11, 2011. In addition, the band is
preparing for their 10t" anniversary year.
Howard and Jim would like to see more support from the Arts Commission during the
concerts and publicity. He specifically looked to the AC to monitor the activity of
children during the concerts. Linda stated that the AC members were happy to usher,
assist guest with special needs and sell/take tickets but would not act in the capacity of
a "bouncer" for unruly children or adults. She felt that was the band's responsibility to
find volunteers to help in that capacity.
Alan Nudelman, a band member and guest tonight, spoke about his plans for publicity
for the band and his ideas to integrate the band into the community. He would like to
get a committee together that represents members of the band, Arts Commission,
Village, band directors of the community schools, school administrators, representative
from the Chamber of Commerce, etc. Chris Gibson has volunteered to be on this
committee and Bonnie Gold, who was not at the meeting tonight, had told Alan she
would also be happy to serve on the committee.
The members of the commission provided him with the following feedback: the band
should participate in community events, play in smaller groups at local events, do a
service project for the community, and focus on "what can the band do for the
community." It was also suggested that the band members and their families become
more involved in all aspects of band life. The feeling was that someone who was very
active would feel they had more ownership of the organization. It was Linda and Carol's
impression from their meeting the previous night that Howard has not approved of this
concept that Alan is proposing. Alan will keep us apprised of his progress.

Sandy Greenberg will attend the Band Board meeting on August 12
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Carol thanked all the Arts Commission and volunteers for their hard work on this
successful event. As in past years feedback was requested from the members on how
we can improve the fest for the coming year. The following comments were provided by
the committee members:
- Provide an ATM machine on the grounds of the festival. Volunteers at the
Information Booth were repeatedly asked for information as to the location of an
ATM but the people did not want to go off the Town Center gounds. Apparently a
number of vendors were not taking checks this year.
- Move the Information Booth away from the main stage. It was too close to the
music and they had difficulty hearing when someone stopped to ask a question.
- The Family Art Tent was a huge success. The crafts selected were well received
and they received a number of donations to support this project.
- Art Festival Office — The committee felt that a location for the office must have
more than one bathroom. Amdur's cleaning staff did not monitor the bathroom for
cleanliness, In addition, the air conditioning did not work well which, due to the
heat, presented a problem for our volunteers and the artists.
- Get youth volunteers to help the artists with set-up and take-down. Artists have
requested this assistance and even have offered to pay for this assistance. It was
suggested to contact Stevenson High School's 300 Club.
- Sunday Breakfast — the committee thought it went well and India House did a
wonderful job. There was some feedback from the artists that they did not realize
what was on the menu and thought it was an Indian Brunch,
- Commissioners mentioned that many of the artists commented on how much they
enjoy coming to Buffalo Grove because of our volunteer organization.
- Many of our volunteers love doing this because it's fun.
- Shirts — questions came up on sleeveless shirts and/or baseball caps.
- Site — There was a question as to if there was another way the fest could be set
up since it appears so long. Do a double row in the parking lot or do another
configuration.
- Quality of the art was excellent.
- Provide a full tent for the kids. They were in the full sun each day. Carol reported
that Ghida has already implemented a change that will have the youth artists
displaying their work one day and the Unique Expression artists displaying their
work the other day. Either Amdur or the Village will provide a tent that is big
enough to provide shelter for these artists.
- Water — The entire committee was extremely disappointed in the method of water
distribution used at the fest this year. The committee felt that we pay Amdur to
host this program in Buffalo Grove and we do have a say as to how things are
handled. Next year the committee wants to go back to the bottle water
distribution. This year the water was not distributed as planned and there was
little help from Amdur staff.
New Business
2011 Public Art Display
Linda requested that all Arts Commission members search out ideas, product
information and costs for various options of public art. Some suggestions were to do
large flowers, rain barrels, recycling containers, etc. This would be done in a fashion
like the buffalos. Antioch just had "Putting on the Dog" and had little painted dogs
throughout the community.
Old Business
Volunteers
Linda reported on a discussion she had with Beverly Sussman and DeAnne Glover
concerning the lack of volunteers in the 30-45 year range. We have previously tried to
reach out to this group with no success. She requested that members try to come up
with some ideas to bring in younger members.
Village Report
Carol reported that Dean Bragg, the new Village Manager, will begin his position on
September 7t". He and his family recently purchased a home in Buffalo Grove and will
be closing at the end of the month,
Forms for the Buffalo Grove Fire Department Pink Heals T-Shirts were passed to
interested parties. Carol reported that the Pink Heals trucks will be at the Village on
September 1st
Adjourn
As discussion was held concerning the next meeting date due to conflicts in the
commissioners schedules. It was decided that the September meeting will be canceled
and the October meeting rescheduled for October 6t"
The motion to adjourn was made by Steve Bulmash and seconded by Laura Ander.
The motion was unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 8.30PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
