Approval of Minutes A motion was made to approve the minutes from the November 10, 2010 meeting by Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously approved. Chair Report Linda welcomed Dr. Eric Smith, our new Trustee Liaison. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Bonnie Gold reported that the spring concert is scheduled for April gth at Stevenson High School. Wayne Messmer and his wife will be the featured artists. There is an Ensemble Concert scheduled for June 5th at Village Hall. More Details to follow. Howard is looking to do a special concert on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Wayne Messmer will be part of this program. Carol reported that she has contacted both Buffalo Grove and Stevenson High Schools and they cannot commit to allowing us the use of their auditoriums at this time. Their schedules for the 2011-2012 school year will not be complete until the early spring. Since this will be a free concert to the public Howard would like to see if the school district would donate the use of their space. Jim Osters of the Symphonic Band has designed a new logo that will be used this year for their 10th anniversary. Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival Carol reported on her meeting with Ghida and Amy Amdur regarding the upcoming 2011 Fine Arts Festival and recap of the 2010 festival. All agreed the 2010 festival was a success. Next year we will continue to distribute chilled water bottles as we have done in previous years. A motion was made by Fred Weissman for the theme of this year's fest to be Art Alive. Bonnie Gold seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. With the theme of Art Alive Laura and Lori discussed a possible craft of painted flower pots for the Family Art Tent. Another suggestion would be to see if the Rotary could change their Thursday night concert to Friday night that week and have the BG Symphonic Band play. The Arts Commission could sponsor a family art evening and possibly have easels set up for the kids to come and paint. Food vendors would be someone like Weiner Take All or vendors that have a connection with the Rotary for their concerts. New Business Spring Event The commission members recommended that we sponsor another event like Bloomin' Buffalo Grove for 2011. This time the committee talked about doing a variety of small items such as flower pots, clocks, boxes, etc. Sandy and Fran will bring suggestions to the next meeting. 2012 Public Art Display The commission discussed decorating used bicycles at the November, 2010 meeting, for a public art project next year. Sharon said when she talked to artists they were not enthusiastic about this project. Carol mentioned that she spoke with representative of the Public Works Department who stated that the bicycles could not be placed in right-of-way areas that were governed by the state or county. The commission will explore other avenues. Some of the catalogues that feature such things as chairs, birdbaths, etc. are not available to us this time of year. We will have to wait until the spring/summer for more ideas on what types of items we can suggest for a 2012 project. Old Business Artists League Sharon Borstein and Fred Weissman are working to develop a group of local artists who can assist the Arts Commission with programs and aid them in promoting their work in the community. A date of Monday, January 24t" was selected to hold the first meeting at Village Hall. Sharon developed flyers that are designed to be placed in local businesses promoting this event. In addition, to maximize the publicity for this event an article appears in the current Village Newsletter, will be publicized on the Village enews system, and will be featured in the local papers. Also the committee members can post this information on their Facebook page and such sites at etsy.com. Some of the ideas Sharon had were to establish pop-up galleries, sponsor workshops, and do other things within the community. Village Report Carol reported that the annual Commissioners' Reception will be held on Sunday, February 27t" at the Arboretum. Adjourn The next meeting is scheduled for February 9, 2011.
