Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the January 12, 2011, meeting by
Barbara Herman and seconded by Gayle Pervos. The motion was unanimously
approved.
Chair Report
Linda thanked Sharon Borstein and Fred Weissman for the wonderful work they did on
the establishment of the Artists' League.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The spring concert is scheduled for April gthat Stevenson High School. Wayne Messmer
and his wife will be the featured artists. Linda asked all to try and put it on their
calendar. At the March meeting we will request volunteers for this program.
There is an Ensemble Concert scheduled for June 5th at Village Hall.
Carol reported that there has been no additional information received from the high
schools concerning the availability to host the September 11th concert. By the end of
February, beginning of March, they may know their schedule for the next academic year
The commission voted to present Howard with a baton at the Spring concert in honor of
his 10 years with the Symphonic Band. In addition, the commission agreed to purchase
pins for the band members. Fred will research the information and make a
recommendation to staff on the items to be purchased. Carol suggested that we use the
10th anniversary logo.
Sandy Greenberg can no longer serve as one of the liaisons to the Symphonic Band
Board meetings. She said that the group meets at Meridian School from 6-15-7.00PM
on the first Thursday of each month. Linda asked for volunteers and no one came forth.
She will also check with other members of the commission who were not present this
evening.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Carol reported that we have not had approval yet from Mark Brennan, Edgemark
Development, for the use of Town Center for the festival.
The Youth Artist program and Unique Expressions will each be featured for one day
only during the festival.
Fred spoke with the manager of the 5/3 Bank in Wheeling and mentioned sponsorship
of the festival. Fred will provide Carol with the information and the Village will follow-up
on this lead.
Sandy Greenberg reported that she and Chris Gibson represented the Village as judges
for the Amdur 2011 shows (with the exception of Port Clinton). They were presented
with a series of slides for each artist and had to rate them on a scale provided by
Amdur. Both thought there was a good selection of art and variety of work presented.
Artists' League
Sharon Borstein and Fred Weissman reported on the first meeting of the Artists' League
which was held on Monday, January 24t". It was a huge success as 40 artists plus
guests attended the meeting.
Sharon gave each of the attendees an opportunity to introduce themselves, discuss
their art (some had samples) and to give their ideas on how they would like to see the
group develop. Some of the ideas that came out of the meeting were: to establish
pop-up galleries, develop a website, networking, visiting artist's studios, developing a
co-op, alternative art-being green, guest speakers, community art education, etc. The
artists talked about the Village assisting in finding places to exhibit art such as banks, libraries,
schools, etc. They would like to make Buffalo Grove a destination spot for art.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 28t" in the Council Chambers of
Village Hall.
New Business
2012 Public Art Display
It was suggested that Sharon query the Artists' League on ideas for a public art display
for 2012.
Old Business
