Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the February 9, 2011, meeting by
Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously
approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated Sharon Borstein on another wonderful Artists' League meeting.
She also thanked Mark Andrews for his work on the development of the Blooming
Buffalo Grove logo. Linda thanked all the commissioners for attending the Volunteer
Reception that was held on February 27th and congratulated those members who
received awards that day.
Blooming Buffalo Grove
Sandy introduced Brian and Francie Paul, and their son Joshua, from Saving Tiny
Hearts organization. The Pauls spoke about their son and the medical issues he faced
at birth which inspired them to establish this organization. In five short years they have
raised over $850,000 which is dedicated to research for Congenital Heart Defects.
They were very grateful that the Arts Commission chose their organization to be the
beneficiary of a portion of the proceeds from Blooming Buffalo Grove 2011. They will
do all they can to assist us in marketing this event and also seek artists to help decorate
the boxes and mirrors. It was suggested that we put a link on our Village website article
about Blooming Buffalo Grove to their website.
Fran reported that the Artists' League members took approximately 37 pieces to
decorate at their last meeting. In addition, she and Sandy are contacting some of the
artists that did the birdhouses last year to assist in this years' project. In addition to the
boxes and mirrors, the committee will be holding a raffle for various baskets, food will be
served and music will be played during the event. Several members of the band will
perform between 2-30PM-3.30PM and we are seeking additional entertainment for the
1:OOPM-2:30PM time slot. Fran showed the committee the design for the program that
was done by Mark Andrews. Mark has also agreed to help the committee with the
design of other printed material and the banner.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The spring concert is scheduled for April gthat Stevenson High School. Wayne Messmer
and his wife will be the featured artists. Volunteers for the evening are Linda, Barbara,
Fred, Chris, Steve, Lynne and Carol.
Carol displayed the baton that will be given to Howard in commemoration of his 10
years of service to the community and also the pins that will be given to all the members
of the band. Linda will make the presentation of the baton at the concert and the pins at
the last rehearsal prior to the concert.
There is an Ensemble Concert scheduled for June 5t" at Village Hall.
Carol reported that both Buffalo Grove and Stevenson High Schools have agreed to
host the September 11t" concert. Since the concert is free to the community it is the
desire to obtain the space either free or at a reduced rate. Carol will pursue a contract
with Buffalo Grove High School.
As part of the Art Festival activities the band will be playing at Rotary Green Friday the
15t". This event will be advertised with the art festival material. Sharon will contact
some members of the Artists' League to see if they are interested in coordinating event
that evening. Carol will work with Ghida to see if we can get a food vendor for that
evening.
Sandy Greenberg can no longer serve as one of the liaisons to the Symphonic Band
Board meetings. Carol will inform Howard Green of this change and that Bonnie Gold
will be our only representative to the Band Board.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
The Village has received confirmation from the Town Center management company
that we can use their facility for the festival.
The theme of the fest is Art Alive. The Youth Artist program and Unique Expressions
will each be featured for one day only during the festival. The Artists' League will be
participating in painting demos. There will also be a Live Art portion of the program
where models will be stationed at various spots in the festival that artists' will paint. The
Family Art Tent will do plastic glasses, with stickers, and the children will plant grass
seeds. We will continue sponsoring the Sunday breakfast and are currently looking for
a space to hold the event. Outside of Cirus Falon, the Village will not invite any
additional musical groups to perform during the festival. The volunteers will be asked to
wear the red shirts that were distributed at last year's festival. Carol asked all members
of the commission to explore and provide ideas of residents or businesses that may
consider sponsorship for this event.
Artists' League
Sharon Borstein reported on the second meeting of the Artists' League which was held
on Monday, February 28th. Approximately 27 artists attended the meeting.
Sharon spoke to the group about the Arts Commission upcoming program Blooming
Buffalo Grove. She asked if any artists were interested in participating. Of the 27
artists there 26 did take boxes or mirrors.
John Green, a member of the group and a local architect, gave at presentation on
architecture and focused on the remodeling of Village Hall which he designed. After
John's presentation the group separated into four (4) focus groups: website,
networking, education and exhibit opportunities. Afterward a representative of each
group presented their ideas to the whole. The next meeting will be held on Thursday,
March 24th at the Arboretum Club. Appetizers and beverages will be available for
