Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7.05 PM.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the March 9, 2011, meeting by Marilyn
Alaynick and seconded by Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band on an outstanding 10th
anniversary concert. She thanked all the commissioners who volunteered to work the
event. A special thanks was given to Lynne Schneider who did the program for this
concert and many others in the last several years. Trustee Eric Smith, who has been
our Staff Liaison for these past few months, was thanked for being part of our group and
supporting our programs.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The spring concert was held on April gth at Stevenson High School. It was a fabulous
program and well attended. Linda and Lynne presented 10th anniversary pins to all the
members of the band and Howard received a baton. All were gifts from the Arts
Commission.
The commission discussed the need for Lot C at Stevenson High School to be open
since the majority of the handicap spots are located in that area. It was suggested that
this be put in the contract for the concert to be held in the spring of 2012. In addition, we
should remind the band that they should not use the parking spots closest to the door.
These spots should be reserved for our guests. It was also suggested that spot lights be
put on the guests soloists for the evening. The spot was on the podium not the soloists.
There is an Ensemble Concert scheduled for June 5th at Village Hall.
Carol reported that Buffalo Grove High School has agreed to host the 9/11 concert and
has waived all the fees for the program. Howard is looking for volunteers from the Arts
Commission to be part of a group organizing this event. Bonnie Gold, Fred Weissman
and Steve Bulmash have agreed to represent the Arts Commission on this committee.
Blooming Buffalo Grove
Sandy and Fran reported that all the boxes and mirrors (105 pieces) have been
distributed and are starting to filter back to us. What the artists have done is amazing.
Mark Andrews has designed a wonderful poster and print materials for this event. The
committee is working on publicity and commission members will be asked to distribute
posters when available. Sandy asked that each and every member of the commission
work to get people to attend the event.
Raffle gifts are starting to come in. Besides the baskets that were donated by Indian
Trails Library we also received a donation from Steve Bulmash and will be getting one
from Lynne Schneider. Long Grove Confectionary has also agreed to donate a basket
of chocolate.
A motion was made by Sandy to split the profits of this event with 60% going to Saving
Tiny Hearts and 40% to the Arts Commission to fund future arts programming. The
motion was seconded by Barbara and the vote was unanimous.
In addition, food will be served and music will be played during the event. Several
members of the band will perform between 2-30PM-3.30PM and the Savings Tiny
Hearts organization is attempting to find a group to play for the 1:OOPM-2:30PM time
slot.
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Carol reported that Versailles has agreed to allow us to use their restaurant for the
Sunday breakfast. We will be seeking donations for the food as we have done in the
past. The Town Center management company has agreed to allow us the use of the
same space for an office that we had last year. We are searching for more youth artists.
Carol asked Sharon to make an announcement at the next Artists' League meeting. In
addition, we are looking for people to act as models for the live art portion of the event.
Sharon suggested we contact CLC and Harper to see if there are art students that
would like to participate.
Village President-to-be, Jeff Braiman, and Linda Rosen will be filming a promotional
piece for the art festival for Amdur Productions. The taping is May 3rd. Laura Ander and
Lori Lapping were not in attendance so there was no report from
the Family Art Tent Committee. Sharon mentioned that some Artists' League members
were interested in volunteering for this event. Carol asked her to send their names and
email addresses to Ghida Neukirch.
Artists' League
Sharon Borstein reported on the third meeting of the Artists' League. It was held at the
Arboretum Club on March 24t" and several new artists came. She also thanked Trustee
Trilling and several Arts Commissioners who attended that evening.
Sam Borstein filled in for the person who was originally scheduled to be the feature
speaker of the evening but had to cancel due to illness. Sam spoke on underwater and
wildlife photography. Excellent program.
One of the topics that came out of the meeting was a discussion on the proposed
website and domain name. Sharon will be working with Robert Giddens, Buffalo Grove
Director of IT, to come up with this information. She also has established a Face Book
page for the group and developed a newsletter which will be the main communication
tool for post meeting information.
Sharon also reported that on a recent trip to Puerto Rico she met an artist who heads a
group such as ours and discussed a shared show. We would send pieces to Puerto
Rico for an exhibit and they would then send theirs to us. This concept will be explored
with the group.
The next meeting will be held on April 215t at 7:OOPM at the Arboretum. Appetizers and
beverages will be available. Peter Patterson, a glass artist, will speak on his art and the
process.
The Indian Trails Library has offered the group their display space for an August 2011
show.
New Business
Sandy Greenberg talked about how much her teen grandsons liked the concert. It was a
good way to introduce them to concert etiquette.
Old Business
None
Village Report
Carol asked the commission how many people thought they could make the band party
on May 26t". About six (6) people thought they could attend. This information will be
given to Howard Green.
Adjourn
The next meeting is scheduled for May 11, 2011.
The motion to adjourn was made by Marilyn Alaynick and seconded by Sharon
Borstein. It was unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 7.55PM
