Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7.00 PM.
Approval of Minutes
Barbara Herman made a motion to correct the minutes to add "not" in the section on the
Buffalo Grove Fine Arts Festival, first paragraph, last sentence, between would and be.
Marilyn Alaynick seconded the change. A motion was made to approve the amended
minutes from the June 8, 2011, meeting by Barbara Herman and seconded by Gayle
Pervos. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda welcomed Trustee Ottenheimer to the Arts Commission. She was so pleased
that the Arts Commission sponsored so many wonderful events for the community this
summer. First there was Symphonic Band Ensemble Concert Ensemble, then the Jazz
Band performance on the Friday night before the Art Festival, the very successful Art
Festival and the first exhibition from the Artists' League at Indian Trails Library.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
Bonnie Gold reported that plans are underway for the 9/11 concert which is to be
held at 3:OOPM at Buffalo Grove High School. President Jeff Braiman, along with our
Fire Department, Police Department, local clergy and the military will be part of the
program. In addition, A Lincoln Portrait, by Aaron Copland, will be narrated by Wayne
Messmer. Volunteers for this event are Gayle Pervous, Chris Gibson and Carol
Berman.
The Fall Concert is scheduled for November 13t" at Buffalo Grove High School
Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival
Despite the heat, the Fine Arts Festival was very successful. The artists seemed
pleased and the Village and Amdur Production staff worked well together.
The commission members reviewed the 2011 Recap of the festival prepared by Ghida
Neukirch. Additional comments that came from the group are:
• Keep the show in July but avoid any conflict with the Ann Arbor festival.
• Although the artists did not attend the Friday night concert at Rotary
Green the commission members felt it was a nice touch and should be
continued next year.
• The general feeling was that the time the fest is opened, 10:OOam-5:OOpm,
is good and should be continued. Having the fest later on Sunday would be a
problem since many artists drive to home after the event.
• Breakfast — the commission was disappointed that more people did not
attend the breakfast, especially those that were receiving awards. It is the
recommendation of the committee to not repeat this next year. It was
suggested that we do get some bagels, donuts, coffee cakes, and fruit but just
put them in the office for the artists
• Children's Art Tent — Will consider face painting and tattoos for next year.
Gayle Pervos stated that her husband would like to sponsor the event next
year. It was suggested that this tent, plus the Youth/Unique Expressions tent
should be in line with the others.
• Youth Artists/Unique Expressions — greatly lower the cost from $50. They
never seem to sell to a point that they recoup this fee.
0 It was suggested that we may want to consider three shifts of volunteers
instead of two. Some volunteers could have options to work more than one but
with the heat shorter shifts may make a difference to some of our older
volunteers.
• There were concerns about the number of volunteers that were a "no show."
Maybe next year we should confirm with them via email or phone.
• Shirts for next year — the committee requested sleeveless shirts with a lower
neck.
• Next year all water should be distribute in bottles. The village will have to
seek additional sponsors to purchase more water than we had this year.
• CERT should be more visible.
• There was no cart available for emergency purposes. When one was
needed our volunteers could not reach anyone to send one to the site.
• Provide the AC volunteer space in the office a walkie talkie.
• Amdur should concentrate on more variety of artists for next year. To our
knowledge there were no water color artists and too many jewelers.
• Mark Andrews said we could develop a Google voice number that would
connect all volunteers, commissioners and staff. We will work with Mark to
explore this option for next year.
Artists' League
Sharon Borstein reported on the June meeting of the Artists' League. It was held at the
Arboretum Club and Pam Olin was the featured artist.
The Artists' League is currently sponsoring its first all member show at the Indian Trails
Library during the month of August. The opening reception, held on August 2nd, was a
huge success. Although it was a very rainy day there were between 40-50 people
attending this event. The Artists League was successful in getting very good publicity
for this show. Refreshments were served and what was left at the end of the evening
was donated to the Buffalo Grove Police Department.
Sharon has been in contact with the artists' leagues in Palatine and Arlington Heights.
There will possibly be a joint project in the future.
The next meeting is scheduled for August 29t" at the Indian Trails Library.
New Business

Old Business
Public Art Project
The commission is still seeking a public art project for 2012. Linda discussed Project
Butterfly that was done by Highland Park, in their downtown area, this summer. Sharon
mentioned that one of the Artists' League members discussed doing light sculptures in
the winter. Laura Ander was going to research items that we can use for a public art
project in 2012 and report back to the Arts Commission at the September meeting.
Saving tiny Hearts Gala
Sandy Greenberg mentioned that she had attended the annual gala and our boxes,
mirrors and bird houses were up for sale. It was a lovely event and hopefully raised a
lot of money for the organization. The Village of Buffalo Grove Arts Commission was
given recognition in the program book for their donation to the organization from the
Blooming Buffalo Grove project.
Sculpture Garden
Additional money was raised for this project from the Leonard Goldin Memorial Fund.
The commission was asked to come up with ideas on where we should place the first
sculpture. Carol mentioned that due to easements and underground electrical lines the
Lake Cook frontage on the village campus would not be a good location. Currently we
have about $7,000 saved for this project.
Village Report
Carol asked the membership if anyone was interested in joining the
Barrington/Northwest Chapter of the Art Institute. Anyone interested should contact her
directly.
Adjourn
The next meeting is scheduled for September 14, 2011.
The motion to adjourn was made by Marilyn Alaynick
and seconded by Lori Lapping. It was unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at
8.10PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
