Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda welcomed Shari Ginsberg who filed a Talent Bank Application and was interested
in becoming involved with the Arts Commission. Shari has been a resident of Buffalo
Grove for 3 '/ years. This summer she also volunteered to work the Art Festival and is
interested in becoming more involved with the work of the commission.
Linda congratulated Sharon Borstein and the Artists' League for another wonderful
event — the September meeting that featured a speaker on paints and color mixing.
She also spoke to the commission on the two events that should be the focus of interest
in the coming year: a public art program for the spring-summer season and a program
to develop ideas for type, location and funding for a sculpture garden.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
In Bonnie's absence Carol gave the report on the Symphonic Band. The Fall Concert is
scheduled for November 13t" at Buffalo Grove High School. Volunteers were requested.
Those who agree to assist the band that evening were: Linda, Chris, Steve, Lynne,
Sandy, Sharon, Barbara and Sheri. The question was asked if the village was going to
add any additional handicap parking. Carol stated that the only time this was done was
for the concert that also included a show of work done by disabled artists.
Christmas concerts are scheduled as follows:
12/04 Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard in Prospect Heights
12/11 St. Mary's Church
12/14 Northwest Assembly of God in Mt. Prospect
Band board elections are this week. There is one opening on the board. The band is
happy to report that it is in the black financially.
Artists' League
Sharon Borstein reported on the September meeting which featured Andrea Harris, of
Gamblin Paints, who spoke on color theory. Over 40 people were in attendance for this
meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for October 24t" at the Village Hall in the EOC
at 7:OOPM. Ms. Harris will also be the featured speaker and this time feature
Strathmore Paper— how paper happens.
The November 28t" meeting will be held at the Village Hall Council Chambers. The
speaker for this meeting has not been determined. There will be no December meeting.
The January meeting will feature John Wieland who will speak on the importance of
framing. Other topics the group is exploring are the use of social media in the arts and
ergonomics. Sharon will be speaking to Debbie, of the Raupp Museum, to do an
exhibition at their location. In addition shows are being explored at the Indian Trails and
the Vernon Township libraries.
Sharon also discussed the concept of a pop-up gallery but there are a number of details
that would have to be explored before the commission would approve such a venture.
These details include staffing, payment of utilities, sales tax, etc.
Sharon and some members of the Artists' League have started to work on the website.
She is also working with some of the members to develop a logo for the group. Both of
these should be in place before the January meeting.
Sharon mentioned that a suggestion came for a future Bloomin' Buffalo Grove project
which was paper mache eggs. It's a great spring theme.
New Business
Lynne stated that the Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring The Heart of Buffalo Grove
Awards. Two people who are involved with the Arts Commission are finalists for this
program: Linda Rosen for the Above and Beyond award and Howard Green for the
Teach and Inspire award. The banquet will be held on November 19t" and Lynne
encouraged all to attend. At that time the winners will be announced.
Linda told the commission that the Encore singers won the regional award for Sing 2011
and now will be competing on a national level with twelve (12) other groups. Voting will
be on-line and begins on 10/18 and ends on 10/31. They are competing to win $20,000
for their favorite charity. She will send more information to the commission on how to
vote for the group.
Old Business
Sculpture Garden
The committee discussed the desire to purchase a piece of sculpture for the village.
Some of the locations that were suggested were Rotary Green, Mike Rylko Park and
the little park on the corner of Weiland and Lake Cook Rds. Carol will explore the
feasibility of Rotary Green with the Village Engineer and the Village Forester.
Once a location is determined the group will have to develop a plan for fundraising for
this project. Some of the suggestions were tribute cards, engraved bricks and memorial
donations.
Carol reported that she spoke with the Finance Director, Scott Anderson, and Ghida
who agreed to set up a special fund to deposit money raised for this project.
Public Art 2012
The Arts Commission would like to do a public art project in 2012. The two (2) previous
projects that were done by the commission were buffalos and benches. A discussion
was held on what other communities had done — Highland Park had their butterflies,
Palatine had Adirondack chairs, Barrington had horses, etc. One of the ideas explored
were balloons. In all cases the butterflies, chairs and horses were sold at the end of the
exhibition. In Highland Park the artists received a portion of the sale of the butterflies.
The committee felt that this was a good idea and would probably draw professional
artists. The public art project and the participating artists received good publicity for
their efforts. Linda encouraged all the members to come to the November meeting with
ideas on what can be done and the cost of the proposed item to be featured.
