Chair Report
Linda congratulated Sharon Borstein and the Artists' League for another wonderful
meeting —the October meeting that featured a speaker on paper.
Congratulations to commission member Lynne Schneider for her recent IACCE award
for the Distinguished Chamber Professional. Also congratulations are in order for Laura
Ander on the marriage of her son and the birth of her new granddaughter.

Artists' League
Sharon Borstein reported on the October meeting which featured Andrea Harris,
representing Strathmore Paper, who spoke on the various types of papers available and
the history of the development of this medium.
The November 28t" meeting will be held at the Village Hall Council Chambers. Jim
Futransky will be speaking on "Frederick's Gift". It is the story behind the Helen Birch
Bartlett Memorial Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. This collection includes
well-known and much-loved pieces by artists such as Seurat and Van Gough. The
public is welcome to attend this meeting.
There will be no December meeting. The January meeting will feature John Wieland
who will speak on the importance of framing. The meeting will be held at the Great
Frame Up in Deer Park. The speaker for the February meeting is Beverly MacLean
who will speak on putting your passion into action.
Sharon informed the commission that the group was working on a website template and
the cost was $65. Gayle Pervos made a motion to approve this cost and it was
seconded by Marilyn Alaynick. The motion was unanimously approved. Sharon also
showed the commission the new logo for the Artists' League — both the horizontal and
vertical versions. The logos will be submitted to Ghida Neukirch for Village Board
approval.
In February the group will be holding another show at the Indian Trails Library. Linda
had suggested a donation box for the Artists' League. Sharon will seek to obtain ideas
for future programs and speakers from the group.
Art Festival
Carol reported that she and Ghida met with Amy Amdur and Rose to recap the 2011 Art
Festival and plan for the 2012 event which will be held on July 21 St and 22nd
This is a recap of the discussion:
• There is a new property manager for the Town Center. His name is Tim
Donohue. Ghida and I met with him last week and he seemed very
pleased to have the festival at Town Center.
• Amy suggested two changes to the set-up for next year: the first is to
bring the Family Art Tent and the Youth/Disabled Artists' booths to be in
line with the other booths but more on a perpendicular format. The other
was to expand the north end to include the space in front of eSkape.
• CERT booth will be brought into line with the other artists.
• Last year eSkape had a DJ playing music to attract customers. It was
suggested by Amy that we include that area more for special events that
Bill Feldgreber would like to promote, including food, and music. It was
suggested to have a meeting with Bill, Tim, Amy and staff.
• Also look at additional marketing opportunities. On Amy suggested was to
get the BG Theaters to offer a free movie one evening. This would give
them the ability to have their business in the publicity materials put forth by
Amdur. Also contact the other businesses for additional opportunities for
the weekend.
• To promote the Town Center businesses the Village could possibly help
with doing their signage for the weekend.
• Bottled water—We will go back to distributing bottle water as we have
done in the past. The AC/Village will try to obtain sponsors to donate the
water.
• The Art Alive concept is one we should try to pursue only this time contact
middle schools in the area and look for volunteers,
• Breakfast —Amy and Ghida were fine with the idea of canceling the formal
breakfast. Amy did not feel that if we brought it into the office the artists
would come but suggested that we distribute bags with bagels, small
containers of cream cheese, OJ, and a note thanking them for coming to
the fest. The commission members thought this would be very time
consuming.
• A discussion was held on the hours of the show. The decision was to
keep the hours of 10:OOAM to 5:OOPM both days.
• Artists' League —Amy suggested that we involve the Artists' League in the
fest. Suggestions were:
1. to have their art displayed in empty storefront starting in May
2. add members to the group that juries the artists
3. add members to the judging panel
4. art demonstrations (possible 15 minutes on stage discussing their
work)
. The jury will probably take place the last week of January
The commission discussed a theme for next year. A suggestion was made for Art in
Motion. In addition, the commission asked that we request that Amdur only bring in
juried art for the show.
Old Business
The commission is still looking for a site for the proposed Sculpture Garden.
The subject of Tribute Cards was discussed. Laura Ander request that Carol see if the
remaining cards can be printed so that they can be used for donations to the Arts
Commission. The commission members felt that this was a good revenue source and
we could possibly raise a lot of money for the commission. Carol will ask if it's possible
to develop a separate website address so that people who are interested in making a
donation can use this site for communications.
Public Art 2012- The commission would still like to do a project for this coming year.
The location selected was Rotary Green since the community gathers there each week
in the summer for a concert with the highlight being the 4t" of July. Linda asked all the
members to come to the January meeting with information on a medium that can be
used for this project. Carol mentioned that the Village Forester informed her that there
is a lot of vandalism at that site. This will be discussed at the January meeting.
New Business
The Heart of Buffalo Grove Awards is scheduled for November 19t". Two people who
are involved with the Arts Commission are finalists for this program: Linda Rosen for
the Above and Beyond award and Howard Green for the Teach and Inspire award.
Lynne encouraged all to attend.
The suggestion was made to improve the "look" of our portion of the website. A
suggestion was also made to improve our communications with the community by
establishing an AC website, Facebook page and Twitter account.
