Chair Report
Linda congratulated the commission on another wonderful year of programming. As
she was preparing the Arts Commission Annual Report for the Village Board she
reviewed all the outstanding events that were held this year. She specifically noted
another successful Bloomin' Buffalo Grove project, the formation of the Artists' League
and the 9/11 Symphonic Band Concert for the community.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The Spring Concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 21St at Stevenson High School. In
addition to this concert another is scheduled for the small ensemble at Village Hall on
June 10t" and the annual 4t" of July concert.
The requests that came from the band was to have the Jazz Band play Friday night or
Saturday afternoon at Buffalo Grove Days, playing the Friday night prior to the start of
the Art Festival and also to play at Willow Stream. It was the suggestion of the
committee that someone from the band contact Karen Dannenberg from BG Days and
then someone from the Park District to schedule these events.
The band would also like to schedule the Fall concert at Buffalo Grove High School for
one of the following dates: November 3rd 4t" 10t" or 11t" or October 20t" or 21'. A
Saturday night would be preferred. Carol will follow up with the high school on these
dates.
Artists' League
This month the Artists' League is celebrating its 1st anniversary. It's been a very exciting
and productive year for the league.
Sharon reported on the upcoming meetings:
January 23rd John Wieland will speak on the importance of framing. The meeting will
be held at the Great Frame Up in Deer Park.
February 27t" — Beverly McKeen will be the guest speaker that evening. She is a
motivational speaker and her topic that evening will be "Turning Your Passion into
Action."
March (dated to be determined) —Andy Nathan is a social media expert who will
speak to the group on how they can promote their business with the use of social
media.
The Artists' League will have their second show at the Indian Trails Library during the
month of February
Old Business
Public Art
Sharon had contacted two (2) companies that do fiberglass pieces that can be used for
public art: Cowpainters in Chicago and Chicago Fiberglass Works. Both do custom
pieces but Cowpainters also has an inventory of molds that can be used. Among the
many suggestions of objects to consider were hearts and stars.
Carol Berman spoke of her conversation with Debbie Baker who chaired the HCS
Family Services public art project in Oak Brook this year. They got their pieces from
Cowpainters which cost approximately $2,000 and hired artists to paint the pieces for
$750. The cost was absorbed through sponsors. The pieces were displayed at the Oak
Brook Center through the summer and then the pieces were auctioned at a benefit gala
in September. The commission members felt that there was not enough time to plan
this type of project for 2012 and suggested we move the concept to 2013. Fran Sachs
made a motion to form a committee to work on this project for 2013. The motion was
seconded by Laura Ander and unanimously approved. Commission members who
volunteered for the committee were Fran Sachs, Sandy Greenberg, Sharon Borstein,
Mark Andrews, Steve Bulmash and Fred Weissman. Shari Ginsberg also volunteered
to serve on the committee.
Sculpture Garden
Carol told the commission of her recent conversation with Ira Shapir, a Chicago
sculptor, who will be installing a piece of sculpture for Fisher Container, 1111 Busch
Parkway. Mr. Shapir has volunteered to attend one of our Arts Commission meetings to
discuss some concepts with our group for location and various types of installations for
a future piece of work for the Village. The commission members felt they would love to
hear what he has to say and asked that Carol invite him to a meeting.
Tribute Cards
Carol will see if the remaining cards can be printed so that they can be used for
donations to the Arts Commission. The commission members felt that this was a good
revenue source and we could possibly raise a lot of money for the commission. Carol
will also ask if it's possible to develop a separate website address so that people who
are interested in making a donation can use this site for communications.
New Business
Whole Foods
Shari Ginsberg spoke of her meeting with George Economos of Whole Foods in
Palatine. Mr. Economos would like to have information on sponsorship programs for
some of our events. It was recommended that a possible donation of water for the 2012
Fine Arts Festival be a good choice. Carol will have Ghida Neukirch contact him and tell
him of opportunities that are available for this event.
Fall Event
Linda stated that since we have postponed the public art project to 2013 we have no
major project planned for 2012. The commission members discussed the possibility of
sponsoring a fall arts and craft event at one of the local junior high schools. Laura
Ander will check with the principal of Twin Grove to see if that facility would be available
to us on a weekend day(s) in November or December. Once we find a venue we can
develop this concept in detail.
Village Report
At the last meeting there was some discussion of updating the look of our website.
Carol stated that the only thing we can do is to add pictures. Fred Weissman will send
Carol something from the recent Art Festival and we will also use one of Ed Borstein's
pictures of Bloomin' Buffalo Grove.
Carol mentioned that she could not be here for the scheduled April 11t" meeting and
requested that the commission consider changing the date. The commission agreed to
April 4t" — the first Wednesday of the month for that meeting.
Adjourn
The next meeting is scheduled for February 8, 2012.
The motion to adjourn was made by Steve Bulmash and seconded by Laura Ander. It
was unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 8.10PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
