Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7.07 PM.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick to approve the minutes and it was seconded by
Fred Weissman. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda welcomed Shari Ginsburg as a member of the Arts Commission. She was
approved by the Village Board at the February 6t" Village Board meeting. Linda also
congratulated Sharon Borstein and the Artists' League on a wonderful show at the
Indian Trails Library. She also announced that Laura Ander had another grandchild
today — Savannah Rose.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The Spring Concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 21St at Stevenson High School. In
addition to this concert another is scheduled for the small ensemble at Village Hall on
June 10t" and the annual 4t" of July concert.
Linda asked all commissioners to check their calendars to see if they will be able to
volunteer to work the April 215t concert. We will prepare a list of volunteers at the April 4
t" meeting.
Artists' League
The month of February the Artists' League is having an exhibition at the Indian Trails
Library. Sharon thanked all who attended the opening reception which was held the
evening of February 2nd. Forty piece of art are displayed from twenty-seven artists.
Most of the artists were very pleased with the show and the attendance at the reception.
The January 23rd meeting was held at the Great Frame Up in Deer Park. John Wieland
spoke on the importance of framing. The meeting was very interesting and well
attended.
The following are dates of the upcoming meetings:
February 27t" — Beverly McKeen will be the guest speaker that evening. She is a
motivational speaker and her topic that evening will be "Turning Your Passion into
Action."
March 22nd —Andy Nathan is a social media expert who will speak to the group on
how they can promote their business with the use of social media.
The group is looking to do a fall show at the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center. Sharon
assisted Stevenson High School with their Odyssey Program. She thought that we
could possibly draw a number of the young artists in the area to our projects.
Art Festival
Carol reported that plans are underway for the 2012 Fine Arts Festival to be held on
July 215t and 22nd at Town Center. Sharon reported that she participated in the judging
for all the Amdur Productions shows and the quality of the art was excellent. Some
items that were discussed:
- The theme of the festival is Art Alive
- Lori Lapping will talk with Laura Ander to come up with the projects for the
Family Art Tent
- Dr. Pevos has agreed to sponsor the Family Art Tent for 2012
- Youth artists and artist with special needs will have their booth flush with the
other artist's booths.
- The northern end of the festival will be expanded to include a portion of the
eSkape frontage.
- A suggestion was made to see if Town Center management would allow Art
Fest posters and art from the Artists' League members in the front windows of
the empty stores the month prior to the festival.
This year our festival conflicts with the Ann Arbor festival. The committee was not
happy since this was previously discussed with Amdur that we did not want that conflict.
Trustee Trilling said he would discuss the situation with Ghida.
Old Business
Public Art
Lori Lapping volunteered to chair this event and Gayle Pervos and Sharon Borstein
volunteered to assist. Some of the suggestions coming from the commission were:
Bees — BG Bees — Catch the buzz on Buffalo Grove — Great to Bee in Buffalo
Grove.
Pillars with a BG on top — have a place on the pillar where a plaque can be
affixed that says this business is a pillar of the community.
The committee will meet to discuss other alternatives and obtain pricing. Carol Berman
will contact Rick Kuhl of the Public Works Dept. to see if the bees, or any other type of
fiberglass sculpture, could be affixed to the trees in Rotary Green or on light poles in the
community.
Sculpture Garden
Carol told the commission that the sculpture done by Ira Shapir is now installed at
Fisher Container, 1111 Busch Parkway. Mr. Shapir has volunteered to come to our
next meeting to discuss some concepts with our group for location and various types of
installations for a future piece of work for the Village.
Tribute Cards
Carol found four (4) packages of 10 cards which appears to be the last of the cards
minus a few that we'll save for samples All were sold at the meeting. Discussion will be
held on ordering more cards at a future meeting.
New Business
Theatrical Performance
Jay Geller, a Buffalo Grove resident, has developed a one man show called "Life with
Suzanne." It's the story of how he lost his wife and raised two children by himself.
Linda thought it would be a wonderful idea to bring this program to Buffalo Grove. Linda
would like to contact him to see if he would be interested in partnering with the AC and
possibly hold this program sometime in August at one of the little theaters at Stevenson
High School. Carol will call to check availability and cost of the space. Fred Weissman
made a motion to move forward with this program. Lori Lapping was the second.
Motion passed unanimously.
Performing Arts Center
Linda said she was contacted by Kim Cashmore, Superintendent of Recreation at the
Buffalo Grove Park District, about the Village and Park District joining together to
establish a performing arts center. Trustee Trilling spoke on the fiscal costs and upkeep
of such a building. It was suggested that maybe Buffalo Grove could partner with other
surrounding communities to establish this venue. He will try to set up a meeting with
the Village President, Village Manager and Linda to discuss this issue.
Film Festival
Mark Andrews discussed the possibility of hosting an independent film festival at the
Buffalo Grove Theaters. The concept would be to encourage residents of their
community to develop a film that was three minutes in length or less. This would be a
family friendly program. We would have guest judges. The winning videos could be
sent to You Tube.
Village Report
Carol reminded the commission members that the Volunteer Reception is scheduled for
Sunday, March 4t" at 1:30 at the Arboretum. Lori Lapping and Laura Ander are being
honored for five (5) years of service to the Village.
Adjourn
The next meeting is scheduled for March 14, 2012.
The motion to adjourn was made by Barbara Herman and seconded by Marilyn
Alaynick. It was unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 8:35PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
