Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7.01 PM.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Shari Ginsberg to approve the minutes of the February 8, 2012,
minutes with the following corrections: Shari Ginsberg's name was spelled incorrectly in
the Chair Report, John Wilen's name was spelled incorrectly in the Artists' League
section and it was Sharon Borstein, not Mark Andrews, who suggested the film festival.
The motion was seconded by Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously
approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated Sharon Borstein, and the Buffalo Grove Artists' League, on another
wonderful exhibit at the Indian Trails Library.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The Spring Concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 21St at Stevenson High School. In
addition to this concert another is scheduled for the small ensemble at Village Hall on
June 10t" and the annual July 4t" concert at Rotary Green.
Linda asked all commissioners to check their calendars to see if they will be able to
volunteer to work the April 21st concert. We will prepare a list of volunteers at the April 4
t" meeting.
At this time we do not have a staff liaison to the Symphonic Band. Linda had asked for
a volunteer but no one came forward.
Artists' League
During the month of February the Artists' League had an exhibition at the Indian Trails
Library. Forty pieces of art were displayed from twenty-seven artists. Two artists sold
pieces as a result of the show.
The February 27t" meeting featured Beverly McKeen as the guest speaker. Her topic
was "Turning Your Passion into Action." It was an excellent and well attended program.
The March 22nd meeting will feature Andy Nathan, a social media expert, who will
speak to the group on how they can promote their business with the use of social
media.
The Artists' League is proposing a new magazine that will be designed and published by
one of the members. The magazine will feature works by members of the Artists'
League and there would be a fee for participation. The magazine would be distributed to
members of the league and those participating can then send it on to their friends and
clients. Sharon will prepare a business plan for the project.
The group is also proposing an exhibit at the Town Center in coordination with the Art
Festival. Artists would display pieces in the empty storefronts beginning in June.
Approval from the Village Board and Town Center management is pending.
Art Festival
The volunteer meeting for the festival will be held on Wednesday, June 6t at 6:OOPM.
Ghida Neukirch had a discussion with the representatives of Amdur Productions
concerning the conflict with the Ann Arbor Festival. Our festival is always scheduled for
the 3rd week of July. As of February Amdur had over 200 artists apply for the Buffalo
Grove fest. Sandi Greenberg, who was one of our volunteer judges for Amdur
Productions, spoke about the quality of the work she saw this year.
The Family Art Tent will feature paper bag puppets as the featured event. The
commission is requested to seek donations of bottled water for the event.
Public Art 2013
Lori Lapping chaired a committee that met to discuss options for a public art exhibit in
2013. The committee looked at many different subjects for the featured work and
decided on "S" shaped fiberglass benches. The cost of each bench would be $1,000
unless the order was over 20 units which would then bring the price to $950.00.
The committee will develop a business plan if they would like to move forward with this
concept.
Old Business
Sculpture Garden
Ira Shapir, the sculptor who installed the piece at Fisher Container, was to be a guest at
this meeting but had to cancel due to a family illness. Carol will invite
Mr. Shapir to attend the May meeting.
Tribute Cards
Lori Lapping will explore another order of Tribute Cards. We will possibly order cards
with the same design or possibly request a volunteer from the Artists' League to draft a
new cover. These cards will not have blank interiors but will be used as typical tribute
cards.
Film Festival
Sharon Borstein and Mark Andrew are working on this project. The concept they are
exploring is to have BG residents submit short films that would be viewed at the Buffalo
Grove Theaters. There would be different categories and the films would be judged by a
committee.
New Business
Sharon Borstein suggested we explore a concept that was done by the Rochester
Contemporary Art Center. They sent letters to celebrities, politicians and other people
of interest to ask them to donate a 6" x 6" picture and sign it on the back. The program
brought in over 4,400 pieces. All pieces were sold for $20 each but the artist's name
was not revealed until after the piece was purchased. They had an admission fee of $5.
More discussion of this proposed project will be held at the next meeting.
Village Report
Carol reported that due to a legal interpretation of the Open Meetings Act all
subcommittee minutes and notice of meetings must be posted. Please send any
information to her and she will get it posted.
Adjourn
The next meeting is scheduled for April 4, 2012 at 7:15pm.
The motion to adjourn was made by Lori Lapping and seconded by Laura Ander. It was
unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 8.20PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
