Chair Report Linda noted that there are a number of exciting events coming up for the commission: the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Concert, the Buffalo Grove Fine Arts Festival and another show by the Buffalo Grove Artists' League. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band The 2012 Spring Concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 21St at Stevenson High School at 7:OOPM. Volunteers for the April 21 St concert are Lynne Schneider, Fred Weissman, Steve Bulmash, Sharon Borstein, Shari Ginsberg, Linda Rosen and Bonnie Gold. In addition, there is a small ensemble concert at Village Hall on June 10t", the annual July 4t" concert at Rotary Green, another scheduled at Rotary Green on July 20t" as a preview to the Fine Arts Festival, and July 24t" at Willow Stream Park. At this time we do not have a staff liaison to the Symphonic Band. Lynne suggested that someone from the Band Board attend our meeting or send us minutes of their meetings. Artists' League The March 22nd meeting featured Andy Nathan, a social media expert, who gave a wonderful program on using Facebook, Linkedln and other sites to help promote the members' work. The April 23rd meeting will be held in the EOC at Village Hall at 7:OOPM. At that meeting the members will be asked to bring samples of their current work for discussion. The Artists' League is proposing a new magazine that will be designed and published by one of the members. The magazine will feature works by members of the Artists' League and it would be published every few months. The magazine would be distributed to members of the league and those participating can then send it on to their friends and clients. The magazine would be able to feature up to 20 artists in each edition. A motion was made by Fred Weissman to approve this program and was seconded by Lori Lapping. The motion passed unanimously. The group is also proposing an exhibit at the Town Center in coordination with the Art Festival. Artists would display pieces in the empty storefronts beginning in June. Town Center management has approved this concept. We are waiting for approval of the waiver the artists' will be asked to sign by our village attorney. Carol mention that she received a call from a woman who is involved in an art festival in the Lakeview area of Chicago. She had heard about our commission, the painted buffalos project and was seeking information on some of our activities. Word is definitely spreading about our Arts Commission. Art Festival The volunteer meeting for the festival will be held on Wednesday, June 6th at 6:OOPM at Village Hall. The OVM staff is working on getting donors for the bottled water. The Family Art Tent will feature paper bag puppets as the featured event. The commission is requested to seek sponsors for the event. Linda and Laura discussed an art festival they attended in Scottsdale which included a wine tasting. Anyone could by a glass for $10 which also included some tickets for wine. As they went along they could sample various vendors' spirits. The question came up about insurance and licenses. A suggestion was made that Binny's may want to sponsor this event. Carol Berman will check with village staff to see if this is possible. Public Art 2013 Lori Lapping, Laura Ander and Sharon Borstein will develop a business plan for the "S" shaped fiberglass benches to present to the Arts Commission and then the Village Board for approval. Old Business Sculpture Garden Linda spoke about the artist that she and Laura saw at a Scottsdale art festival. The pieces were affordable and cost less than $10,000. We have approximately $5,650 in the fund. The committee asked if all the funds from the Art Purchase program at the Art Festival could be used to purchase a piece of art. Carol will check with Ghida on this issue. Tribute Cards No report at this meeting. Film Festival Sharon Borstein and Mark Andrew are working on this project for the winter of 2013. The Buffalo Grove Theater is interested in hosting this event. The concept is to start small and then build on this over time. More research is needed and Sharon and Mark will provide more information at the next meeting. New Business Picture Donations Sharon Borstein discussed the concept of the donated pictures by celebrities that was presented at the March meeting. After consideration of the project she thought it would be better to have the 6" x 6" picture size as originally discussed. More information on this project will be presented at a later date. Guests At our next meeting we will have two (2) guest speakers. Ira Sapir, the sculptor who did the piece at Fisher Container will be our first speaker. Jackie Matthews from Rainbow Hospice will talk about their program for outdoor art. We will put them at the top of our agenda for our next meeting. Village Report Carol congratulated Lynne Schneider and the Chamber on their 40t" anniversary.
