Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick to approve the minutes of the May 9, 2012, meeting. The motion was seconded by Laura Ander.The motion was unanimously approved. Chair Report Linda thanked all for the wonderful surprise pizza party that was held this evening in recognition of Linda's retirement from School District 96. th On June 20 Linda and other members of the Arts Commission attended the Rainbow Hospice's "Promises Take Flight", the unveiling of their public art project for 2012. The reception was held on the grounds of their office in Mt. Prospect and those attending were able to see all the pieces that will be displayed through out Des Plaines, Park Ridge and Mt. Prospect this summer. Linda did a slide presentation on the pictures she had taken at this event. Sculpture Project Ira Sapir and Susan Hwang came to speak to the group about Ira's work and guide the commission on how to select a site and placement for a piece of sculpture in our community. He is an internationally recognized sculptor and reviewed the work he has done. More information on Ira can be found on www.irasa it®com. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band The band has several concerts during the summer: th • July 4 Symphonic Band Concert at Rotary Green th • July 20 Buffalo Grove Jazz Band at Rotary Green th • July 24 Buffalo Grove Jazz Band at Willow Stream Park • August 7 thBuffalo Grove Jazz Band at Chicago Botanic Gardens th • November 10 Fall Symphonic Band Concert— Libertyville High School Artists' League. th The May 24 meeting was held in the EOC at Village Hall. David Stewart, from the Improv Playhouse, did an amazing presentation on how to interact and communicate with others. Everyone seemed to love his presentation and he promised to come back at a later date for another. There will be no June or July meetings. Sharon Borstein is encouraging Artists' League members to volunteer for the Art Festival. Sharon will make a presentation to the Arts Commission in August on the "Great Big Little Art Show", a new project that she is proposing to the commission. Art Festival All is set for the Art Festival. We are anticipating approximately 140 artists plus sponsors for the program. The location of the office had to be changed to 178 McHenry from the originally scheduled 282 McHenry office. The Family Art Tent will feature only one project and that's paper bag puppets. Chris Gibson is doing bags of art supplies to be given to the Unique Expression and Youth Artists. More volunteers are needed. Please ask anyone you know who might be interested to contact Ghida Neukirch to be placed on the list of volunteers. Everyone is encouraged to attend the kick off concert at the Rotary Green which will be held the Friday night before the fest. The Buffalo Grove Jazz Band will be playing that evening. Public Art 2013 Those members of the commission who attended the Rainbow Hospice event discussed the pros and cons of the butterfly project. It was recommended that we look for other mediums to use for our public art project. Lori Lapping, the chairperson of the committee, was not able to attend the meeting. Linda will talk to her about gathering the committee together to select an item to feature and develop a business plan. Old Business Tribute Cards Discussion was tabled until the next meeting.
