Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7:05PM.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick to approve the minutes of the June 27, 2012, meeting.
The motion was seconded by Fran Sachs and the motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda thanked all the commissioners for their hard work on the Arts Festival. She also offered a
special thanks to Sanders Court Pediatrics for their sponsorship of the Family Art Tent and also
supplying bottled water to the participants.
Two neighboring communities are sponsoring programs of interest: Arlington Heights has a
public art program called "Trains on a Track" and Long Grove is featuring an art festival
sponsored by School District 96.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
th
The November 10 Fall Symphonic Band Concert will be at Libertyville High School. More
details will be available at the next meeting. Chris Gibson mentioned that she went to the
th
August 7 concert at the Botanic Gardens and the Jazz Band, with their new vocalist, performed
a wonderful concert.
Special News from the Village
Trustee Steve Trilling told the commission members about the two new items of interest for the
village that would have impact on arts programming. The first is that the Buffalo Grove Park
District is in the process of purchasing Temple Beth Am for a Performing Arts Center. The
village does not have any involvement in this project but hopes that this facility can also serve
as a venue for the Symphonic Band concerts and other fine arts activities. The other is the
redevelopment of the municipal campus to a downtown center. Many questions were asked
about the project and the commission members were very positive on this possible change for
the community.
Artists' League.
Sharon Borstein made a presentation to the Arts Commission on the proposed "Great Big Little
Art Show", a new project that is proposed to the commission from the Artists' League. The
concept is to solicit original artwork from celebrities, international and local artists, designers
and students for an auction. All pieces will be 6"x6" and sell for$20. Sharon provided details on
this project to commission members prior to the meeting.
A motion was made by Sharon to approve this project and was seconded by Lori Lapping.
The project was unanimously approved. The next step is to obtain Village Board approval and
then begin the project. It was suggested that the charity we partner with on this project should
be an organization that supports returning veterans.
The next exhibit of the Artists' League members will be held at the Buffalo Grove Health and
th
Fitness Club through September and October. The opening reception with be September 7
which will also be the group's first meeting after a summer break. The reception will be held
from 6:30-9:OOPM and all commissioners are encouraged to attend. The next exhibit will be in
February at the Indian Trails Public Library.
Sharon suggested it was time to start charging a membership fee of$20 to cover costs of
mailings and projects. The Artists' League has a Facebook page of Buffalo Grove Artists and a
website of buffalogroveartists.com.
Art Festival
Carol reported that the festival was a huge success. It appears that the artists were happy, the
coordination of the Amdur staff and village volunteers worked well, plus the weather
cooperated. She requested comments from the commissioners on what worked and what
needed improvement. Dane Bragg sent an email to the volunteers thanking them for their
participation and individual letters of thanks were also sent. More letters are going out to our
sponsors, Unique Expressions artists and youth artists to thank them for their participation and
also request feedback. All comments will be gathered to discuss with the Amdur staff and plan
for future fest.
A discussion was held on dogs at the fest. Although a village ordinance is in place the ordinance
has not been enforced. After much discuss it was determined that the policy on dogs at the
fest will remain the same-we will not request the Police Department to enforce this ordinance.
Trustee Trilling noted that the ordinance refers to public property and the fest is held on private
property. If any problems occur volunteers and staff should call 911.
Fran Sachs reported that she went to the Geneva Fine Arts Fair that was organized by EM
Events. She was impressed with the fest and the quality of the artists that exhibited that day
and brought information on the organization. The commission requested that Carol call Erin
Melloy to find out more and request that she attend one of our meetings to discuss their
organization.
Public Art 2013
Gayle Pervos suggested a project for next year. After attending a Buffalo Grove Jazz Band
concert at Rotary Green she felt that there should be more benches surrounding the grassy
area, especially for our BG seniors. The theme for the benches should be music. This
suggestion was going to be forwarded to Lori Lapping and her committee for review and
presentation at the September meeting.
Carol mentioned that when the proposal is submitted it would have to be approved by the
Village Board and then receive approval from Rotary. She has discussed this concept with Rick
Kuhl, Superintendent of Public Works, and he had no issue with the proposal.
Old Business
Sculpture Project
Ira Sapir and Susan Hwang met with Carol Berman to discuss a possible location for a new piece
of art. They provided a brochure detailing available pieces in Ira's inventory and suggested they
would work with us on a price. The commission members felt that with the possible
redevelopment of the village campus that the purchase of a piece of sculpture will be
postponed with the goal of having something for the new village campus.
New Business

Village Report
Carol thanked everyone for completing their OMA training.
