Approval of Minutes
A correction to the August 8, 2012, minutes was made by Sharon Borstein. The correction was
to change the "Great Big Little Art Show" from an Artists' League project to an Arts Commission
project. A motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick to approve the minutes as corrected and
seconded by Shari Ginsberg. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda welcomed our visitor Erin Melloy of EM Events.
Linda also distributed newspaper articles on what other communities are doing: Pop Art in St.
Charles; benches in Itasca; and an Elgin short film festival.
She also thanked Sharon Borstein and the Artists' League for a wonderful opening reception at
the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center.
Art Festival
Erin Melloy, of EM Events, spoke to the group on the art festivals that she handles. Currently
she runs 6-8 festivals a year. In 2012 the festivals were held at Cantigny in Wheaton,
Northbrook, Geneva, Batavia, Oswego, Lakeview East in Chicago and La Grange. She is a one
person company whose role is to obtain the artists, oversee the setup and manage the festivals.
Some of the organizations she works with are Chambers of Commerce, villages/cities, and art
organizations.
Erin feels strongly on quality over quantity. Her typical shows can run from 30-150 artists. She
does not encourage sponsors for the fest, music nor food vendors. If the community or
organization would like to add some or all of these she would work with us.
When a community hires her for a festival she juries her artists and also wants them to include
a picture of their typical booth. The juries are held in February and March. Correspondence
goes out to the artists in November for the following year. We would have to have our
information to her by the end of October,
Her fee for a show is $14,000 no matter how many artists are exhibiting. The typical artist's fee
is $285-$400. Erin felt that if we could do a winter show, possibly sometime in November of
2013, we could charge as much as $400-$500 per artist. All checks from the artists are made
out to the organization hosting the event.
The commission felt that this was a good program but we would have to engage a number of
th
volunteers. We could make a commitment for 2013 and meet a deadline of October 30 . This
would have to include Village Board approval. However, we would like to explore the
possibility of having an indoor art festival next November.
The commission members felt that we should move forward with a contract with Amdur
productions for 2013 but with specific restrictions. It was requested that all commission
members get their comments to Carol Berman no later than September 21, 2012 for the
discussion with Amy Amdur on the new contract.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
th
The November 10 Fall Symphonic Band Concert will be at Libertyville High School. Volunteers
for the evening are Chris Gibson, Shari Ginsberg, Marilyn Alaynick, Mark Andrews and Carol
Berman.
Artists' League.
th
On September 7 the Artists' League held a reception at the Buffalo Grove Health and Fitness
Club to showcase their new exhibit. The exhibit will run through the end of October and all
commission members are encouraged to stop by and view the work. The next exhibit will be
in February at the Indian Trails Public Library.
Sharon suggested it was time to start charging a membership fee of$20 to cover costs of
mailings and projects. The Artists' League has a Facebook page of Buffalo Grove Artists and a
website of buffalogroveartists.com.
