Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7:03PM.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Marilyn Alaynick to approve the minutes and seconded by Barbara
Herman. The motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band for a wonderful and well attended
series of holiday concerts.
Art Festival
Winter Show
Linda, Sharon, Fran and Carol met Amy Amdur and a member of her staff at the Riverwalk
buildings to see if this was a good site for an indoor festival. It was determined that it was too
small to hold a show that would bring in enough revenue to be successful.
Some of the commission members attended the Amdur Productions indoor art festival held at
th nd
the Highland Park Country Club on November 30 — December 2 . The input from the
members was that we did not want to pursue a fest with Amdur.
Fran Sachs suggested that in place of a winter art festival we do a craft fair. Fran made a
motion and it was seconded by Shari Ginsberg to explore the possibility of this event in late
October/early November. The motion was unanimously passed.
Art Festival
Carol sent the proposed Letter of Understanding to the commissioners with the agenda for this
meeting. These are the comments the commissioners had on the document:
• A five year contract is too long. The commission felt that everyone was in
agreement on this issue.
• The agreement should clearly state that the Buffalo Grove fest should not
coincide with the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair.
• Location— it specifies Town Center. The concern is that we cannot always be
guaranteed that we will be able to use that center. In years past we were almost
forced to use another location and Amy Amdur did not come up with another
location in the community that she thought would work as well as the Town
Center. The commission suggested that the wording be changed to protect the
village in case Town Center ownership does not allow us to use the site and we
do not find something that is acceptable to both the village and Amdur
Productions.
• Under the section Volunteers the commission would like "breakfast hosts"
removed. We will probably continue what we did this year which was to provide
bagels, sweets and orange juice that we received from local merchants but do
not want to be tied to that task.
• The commission felt that the term Deputy Village Manager, which is used
throughout the document, should be removed and replaced with the Village's
designee.
• The commission felt the Right of Refusal section should be entirely eliminated.
The commission also discussed the possibility of having a "senior stroll" and/or time for
residents with disabilities on Sunday morning from 9:00-10:OOAM. This recommendation came
from the Commission for Residents with Disabilities. It was suggested that the Unique
Expressions artists move to Sunday and the youth artists move to Saturday. This suggestion
would be passed on to the CRD for approval.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
th
The spring concert is scheduled for April 20 at Stevenson High School. Carol is working with
Buffalo Grove High School to get a date for the fall concert.
Artists' League.
th
The January meeting will be held on January 28 in the EOC of Village Hall. Guest speaker will
be Rick Borstein who will speak to the group about Photoshop.
In February there will be an all member show at Indian Trails Library. The reception for the
th
show will be held on February 10 from 2:OOPM-4:OOPM which will also serve as the February
meeting. At the reception the artists will discuss their work.
The March show, date to be determined, will have as the guest speaker Larry Goldberg.
The group would still like to pursue a storefront gallery. It was suggested that this gallery could
possibly be housed in the Buffalo Grove Park District's new performance arts building. Carol
and Steve Trilling volunteered to talk to Dan Schimmel about this concept.
Public Art 2013
Lori Lapping said the committee got together and felt that due to the economic climate this
project should be put on hold. Laura Ander made a motion to table this project and Lori
Lapping seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Old Business
Great Big Little Art Show
Sharon Borstein discussed the concept and asked for volunteers for the committee. Chris
Gibson, Mark Andrews, Marilyn Alaynick and Barbara Herman volunteered to work on the
project with Sharon.
Sharon suggested that we partner with a charity and suggested Wounded Warriors or the
American Vets Art Museum in Chicago. She will present more information at the next meeting.
Sharon did ask for each of the commission members to come up with names of celebrities that
they would like to invite to be part of the program.
New Business
Sister City—Sharon suggested that we invite Auguadilla, Puerto Rico, to be a sister city in the
arts with Buffalo Grove. Sharon had been there on vacation and they have a very active artist
group. Sharon was asked to explore this concept and to do a due diligence on this group before
we make any proposals to the village board.
Village Report
th
Carol reported that the Volunteer Reception will be held on February 24 at 1:30PM at the
Arboretum Club. She also mentioned that the new Deputy Village Manager, Jennifer Maltas,
would be starting this month.
Adjourn
A motion to adjourn was made by Shari Ginsberg and seconded by Sharon Borstein. The
motion was unanimously approved.
The next meeting is scheduled for February 13, 2013 at 7:OOpm in the EOC.
Meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
