1973-10-15 - Resolution 1973-23 - Open Space Federal Government Prgram for useage of land for Park District use Arlington Heights Nike Base `/ - ri RESOLUTION 73-23 RESOLUTION URGING PRESERVATION OF ARLINGTON HEIGHTS ARMY AIR FORCE DEFENSE SITE (NIKE BASE) WHEREAS, the urban population of the United States as a whole increased 55% between 1950 and 1970, and more than 70% of the United States population now lives in urban areas and it is predicted that by 1980, 80% of the total population will be living in urban communities, and WHEREAS, there has been a tremendous surge in home build- ing in the Northwestern Suburban areas around Chicago during the past ten years, with this being the fastest growing area in the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, there is an urgent need for open space land in the area to assure a decent living environment, to provide for adequate parks and recreation areas and the growing leisure time of the residents, and to curb suburban sprawl and prevent the spread of urban blight and deterioration, and WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States and various agencies of the United States Government have recognized the very pressing need of preserving open space land and have adopted measures to aid and assist communities in obtaining acreage for recreation purposes, and WHEREAS, the only open space land in the Arlington Heights area substantial in nature (140 acres) is the Arlington Heights Army Air Defense Site (Nike Base) in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and owned by the United States Government, and WHEREAS, 100 acres of the Arlington Heights Army Air Defense Site (Nike Base) has been declared surplus property for use as an air defense site and the Arlington Heights Park District has for the past several years had a policy of acquiring said surplus properties for parks and recreation whenever the same have been made available, and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Buffalo Grove that all governmental agencies concerned with the open-space program of the United States Government be strongly urged to make known to the Department of Defense the urgent need for the surplus properties known as the Arlington Heights Army Air Defense site (Nike Base) as recreation area. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Buffalo Grove that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States of America, U. S. Senator Charles H. Percy, U. S. Senator Adlai Stevenson III , U. S. Representative Philip Crane and U. S. Representative Samuel Young .
