CALL TO ORDER In the absence of Chairman Richard Gordon, Commissioner Fred Weissman chaired the Appearance Commission meeting. He called the meeting to order at 7 :37 P.M. on Thursday, August 13, 1998 . II . ROLL CALL Commissioners Present : F. Weissman, L. Dorfman, E. Smith and C. Johnson Commissioners Absent : R. APPROVAL OF MINUTES July 23 , 1998 - Tabled. IV. BUSINESS A. 2150 Lake Cook Road - Riverwalk Phase I Revised Parking Lot with Landscaping Mr. Kenneth R. Nelson, Construction Manager, Hamilton Partners, 300 Park Boulevard, Itasca, IL 60143-2636 (630-250-4914) made the presentation. The existing parking super-structure accommodates 760 cars, but the major tenant, Allstate Insurance Company, requires additional parking. They want to add 44 spaces of outdoor parking area. In order to accomplish this, some of the existing landscap- ing will be transplanted and some new plantings will be added, including flowers and bushes around the ground sign. The area will be entered and exited through the original garage. Com. Dorfman made a motion to recommend approval of the additional parking spaces and proposed landscaping as requested by Hamilton Partners, for Riverwalk Phase I at 1250 Lake Cook Road, per Mr. Raymond Rigsby' s Review, dated August 13, 1998 . B. 400 Lexington Drive, Brandt Box Landscaping of East Property Line Withdrawn by petitioner. C. Busch Grove Community Park - Lighting Postponed until after last item - G. D. 1300 N. Arlington Heights Road LaSalle Bank - New Ground Sign Mr. Dave Thometz, Director of Customer Services, White Way Sign Company, 1317 Clybourn Avenue, Chicago, IL 60610, 312-642-6580) made the presentation. The LaSalle Bank wooden entry sign at the corner of Arling- ton Heights Road and Route 83 was removed because it was deteriorating. They requested approval of a new V-shaped aluminum sign to be installed on the existing brick base . The new sign will be smaller than the old sign and about one foot (1 ' ) shorter. It will have a black background with white internally illuminated copy and a gold bar vinyl over- lay. The vinyl is permanent and guaranteed for 20 years . Com. Johnson made a motion to recommend approval of the new LaSalle Bank ground sign, at 1300 N. Arlington Heights Road, as requested. Com. Smith seconded the motion. He requested replacement of the existing First of America Bank, twenty foot (20 ' ) ground sign at 10 East Dundee Road, with a National City Bank sign that will be sixteen feet (16 ' ) in height . "MAC" is the trade mark for the bank' s 24-hour banking service. The existing First of America Bank wall sign on Dundee Road will be removed, but it will not be replaced. Com. Dorfman made a motion to recommend approval of the National City Bank ground sign at 10 East Dundee Road, as requested. Com. Johnson seconded the motion. E. 1177 Lake Cook Road, National City Bank Sign Face Change (Formerly First of America) Bank) and Recommendation for Variance to Replace Entrance Signs Mr. Joe Channey, North Shore Sign Company, 1925 Industrial Drive, Libertyville, IL 60048 (847-816-7020) made the presentation. The existing First of America ground sign will be replaced with a sixteen foot (16 ' ) National City Bank ground sign at 1177 Lake Cook Road. They also want to replace the existing white non-illuminated Bank of America letters on the two (2) brick entrance signs with teal non-illuminated letters . These signs will require a variance of Sign Code for the number of ground signs . Com. Dorfman made a motion to recommend approval of the National City Bank ground sign at 1177 Lake Cook Road, as presented; and further recommend that a variance be granted to permit installation of National City Bank letters on the two (2) entrance signs . School District #102 - Manual Changeable Copy Signs at : 1 . 850 Highland Grove - Tripp Elementary School 2 . 2195 Brandywyn Lane - Meridian Middle School 3 . 1231 Weiland Road - Aptakisic Jr. High School 4 . 200 Horatio Bulevard - Pritchett Elementary Signs Require Recommendations for Variance Mr. Randy Ziemann, Sign-A-Rama, 40 W. Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 represented School District #201, per letter from Mr. Larry Savage, Aptakisic-Tripp Community Consolidated School District 102, 1231 Weiland Road, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 (847-634-1358) . The School District would like to permanently install manual changeable copy signs at the four (4) schools listed above. The non-illuminated signs are dark bronze anodized aluminum with lexan faces. They are 36" in high and will be instal- led on four foot (4 ' ) dark bronze posts . Total height will be seven feet (7 ' ) . Variance of Sign Code, Sections 14 .40 . 010 and 14 .40 . 020 to permit manual changeable copy signs and to permit the signs to exceed five feet (5 ' ) in height if installed within the required front yard setback, not on a wall . Mr. Ziemann assured the Commissioners that the lexan covers are very durable and they will be kept locked. Com. Busch Grove Community Park on Busch Road Parking Lot Lighting The proposed lighting plan was reviewed without Park District representation. Three twenty foot (20 ' ) poles with metal halide bulbs will be installed at the northwest corner of the Busch Grove Community Park. The photometric plan was acceptable. The Commissioners agreed that the area is dark and needs lighting. Ch. Weissman observed that the rest of the area has high pressure sodium lights, but metal halide will match the lighting at other Park District locations . Com. Dorfman made a motion to recommend approval of the parking lot lighting for Busch Grove Community Park as submitted. Com. Johnson seconded the motion.
