IV. BUSINESS
A. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
15 Port Clinton Road - Ground Sign
Recommendation for Variance of Sign Code
Mr. Dave Christensen, Chicago IL North PM Group Supervisor,
2035 N. Windsor, Arlington Heights, IL 60004 (670-9833)
requested a recommendation for a variance of Sign Code,
Section 14 .20 . 010 to permit the sign to be installed within
within the front yard setback. The sign is smaller and
lower than the Sign Code permits, but a variance is required
to permit it to be installed within the front yard setback
because the church is located in a residential district.
Mr. Christensen presented photographs of an identical sign
and said it is typical of signs that are being installed at
6, 500 locations worldwide. The sign is made of White
Bethel granite and has engraved lettering. It need no
maintenance. The columns are made of poured grey cement.

gation decides they are needed, they will be submitted for
Appearance Commission approval. There is landscaping in
the area, and there will be low shrubbery at the base.

match. The fixtures can be tilted up 30 degrees. Good
examples of the lighting can be seen at McDonald's on
Lake Cook Rd. (next to Wal-Mart) and at Wendy' s on Route 83 .
The photometric plan was reviewed. There is residential

The shopping center renovation is progressing and rental
of the vacant spaces is actively being pursued. Walgreen' s
would prefer to have a free-standing store with a drive-
thru pharmacy, so it is uncertain if they will re-sign.
The fixtures are fully adjustable and they will be tilted,
or shielded, after installation if necessary. The lamps
will be 1, 000 watt, metal halide. Light will not interfere
with traffic for safety purposes. The fixtures near the
street can be horizontal to the ground if necessary. The
interior lights will be directed toward the building.
Com. Smith made a motion to recommend approval of the
Site Lighting Modifications at Strathmore Shopping Center,
as submitted, with the stipulation that the lights will be
adjusted after installation, if the angles prove to be a
problem.
