I . CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Richard Gordon called the Appearance Commission
meeting to order at 7 :33 P.M. on Thursday, January 23, 1997
in the Council Chambers of the Village Hall, 50 Raupp Blvd.
II . ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present : F. Weissman, A. Viehman, M. Cea,
E. Smith and R. Gordon QUORUM.
Commissioners Absent : L. Dorfman and C. Masure

III . APPROVAL OF MINUTES

IV. OLD BUSINESS
A. Jewel Food Store - 79 McHenry Road
Bank of America - Additional Wall Sign
Recommendation for Variance
Mr. John Elkhorn, McClier Corporation, 401 East Illinois
Chicago, IL 60611, (312-836-7700) Construction Manager of
Bank of America, requested a approval of a Bank of America
sign on the west elevation of the Jewel/Osco Food Store at
79 McHenry Road. Bank of America is a full service banking
facility that will be a modular bank within the store. They
have been installed in other Jewel Food Stores in 1996 .
The proposed sign will have illuminated blue letters, 24"
in height with a red Bank of America logo. It is approx-
imately 26 ' in length and will be installed between the
Jewel/Osco and Drug/Food signs on the east facade of the
store. The location was verified because two (2) different
locations are shown on the diagrams . The correct location
#05, not #07 .

Com. Cea made a motion to recommend to the Zoning Board
of Appeals and the Village Board approval of a variance
that would permit the installation of a Bank of America
on the east elevation of the Jewel/Osco Food Store at
79 Mc Henry Road, as submitted, with the stipulation that
the color blue is permitted and the location is to be
between the Jewel/Osco sign and the Drug/Food sign.
Com. Viehman seconded the motion.
Roll Call Vote: AYE - Weissman, Viehman, Cea,

Motion Passed - 5 to 0 .
B. Chase Plaza - New Ground Sign on Lake Cook Road
Chase Plaza - Revised Ground Sign on Arlington Hts . Rd.
Mr. John Zoerner, OCA Construction Inc. 15 W. 308 N Frontage
Road, Unit B, Burr Ridge, IL 60521 (630-323-3472) made the
presentation. He requested approval of a new double-faced
ground sign to be installed on Arlington Heights Road that
includes a directory of tenants and approval of a matching
top portion to be added to the existing ground sign on
Arlington Heights Road. The brick will match the existing
sign as closely as possible. The size of the brick base is
8 ' 2"x 14 ' 4" and the top identification panel is 5 '4"x 4 '4" .
The tenant portion is 5 '4" x 4 '4" and each line of copy will
be 8 ' 38" in height.
The exact setback is not shown on the site plan, but it will
have to comply with the Code. Line-of-sight should not be a
problem. Placement will be subject to Building Department
approval .
The new design will have a beige background with a burgundy
panel and white CHASE PLAZA copy and gold diamonds on top.
The lower portion will have Dominick' s red and green logo.
Mr. Zoerner requested a white tenant panel with a border.
and spaces for up to ten (1) tenants . The tenant copy would
be of their choice. Not all tenants will want to be listed.

The Commissioners said they would not recommend this type of
sign because of the various possibilities of colors, fonts
and logos .
Mr. Zoerner asked that the tenants be permitted to have as
much freedom possible to choose the design of their space.
After discussing the tenant panels, the following design
was agreed upon by the petitioner and the Commissioners.
The background should not be white, it should be ivory or
eggshell (off-white) and all the copy should be burgundy.
The tenants who choose to have two (2) horizontal spaces
should be listed at the top and other tenants will have one
half of a line, keeping the copy in pairs as much as
possible, with blank lines at the bottom.
Com. Viehman made a motion to recommend (1) approval of
the new top portion for the existing Chase Plaza ground
sign on Arlington Heights Road, as submitted, and (2)
approval of a new ground sign at the entrance on Lake Cook
Road, with the following stipulations that apply to the
tenant directory:
1 . The background of the tenant panels is to
be ivory or eggshell (off-white) .
2 . All tenant copy is to be limited to burgundy.
3 . Tenant copy should be organized with the
full panels above the split panels, keeping
the panels in pairs as much as possible.
Com. Weissman seconded the motion.

Ch. Gordon said the Appearance Commissioners are now
