IV. OLD BUSINESS
A. Highland Park Ho_ _:al Health & Fitness Center
Corporate Grove :n Busch Parkway
Revised Glass and Landscape Plan
Mr. Ken Gorman, V. P. _f the Power Hospital Fitness
Group, 2360 N. Palmer :rive, Schaumburg, IL 60173-3819
(847-925-1300) and Mr. Mark Polinko, ILT Vignocchi,
Li a
Landscape Architects, 25865 W. Ivanhoe Road, Wauconda,
IL 60084 (847-487- 5200) were present .
1 . LANDSCAPE PLAN:
Mr. Polinko described the additional evergreen plant-
ings that will be installed along Busch Parkway. The
plan does not show the existing Willows and evergreens
on the west side of the parking lot .
Landscaping has been focused on the entrance on Busch
Parkway and the view looking from Milwaukee. There is
nothing behind the building and someday there could be
a shopping center to the rear. There is the parking
lot of an industrial building to the west so the land-
scaping has been concentrated on the front and east
sides of the building.
Com. Masure made a motion to recommend approval of the
Landscape Plan as submitted for the Highland Park Hos-
pital Health & Fitness Center subject to Ray Rigsby' s
Review and Recommendations, dated January 9, 1997 .
Com. Smith seconded the motion.
Roll Call Vote : AYE - Dorfman, Smith, Masure, Gordon
NAY - None
Motion Passed - 4 to 0 .
2 . WINDOW GLASS :
The glass was Tabled on December 26, 1996 because the
blue/green was too dark so they have chosen a blue
color that is two (2) gradients lighter.
The glass was compared with the rendering that was
submitted and it was noted that the new glass closely
resembles the windows that are shown.
The Commissioners recalled the discussion on December
26th when Mr. Louis Cusimano said they were looking
for glass with a greyer tone, but Mr. Gordon explained
that the blue color reflects the use as an aquatic
center.

The Commissioners discussed the color. At night the
windows would be light and during the daytime, the
color would be affected with sunlight . Blue would
make a more striking statement to the building. They
decided the color was better and would be acceptable .
Com. Dorfman made a motion to recommend approval of
the Asurelite Glass as submitted by the Highland Park
Hospital Health & Fitness Center.
Com. Smith seconded the motion.

V. NEW BUSINESS
A. American Enterprise Bank (Indeck Property)

Revised Ground Sign
Mr. Anthony Miller, Monographics, 5300 Newport Drive,
Rolling Meadows, IL 60008 (847-392-3980) made the
presentation. The design of the proposed sign has been
revised to include the star logo (white on a blue field)
and three (3) red bars . The sign will be 8 ' 4" by 3 ' in
height . The letters will be pin mounted and recessed
into the existing cement base which is 14 ' 2" by 5 ' in
height . The location has also been moved about 20 ' closer
to the point at Buffalo Grove Road and Route 83 . The base
has been installed between the setback lines . The base is
limestone, not brick, so it should not deteriorate below
the ground.
Mr. Mitch Bieser, described the ground lights which will
consist of a single 8 ' foot flourscent tube strip light
that will be installed on the ground in front of the sign
and there will be two (2) par 38 incandescent up light to
wash the both sides of the stone structure . There will
be a variety of 8" to 12" ground cover plantings at the
base of the sign that will completely conceal the
fixtures . Spec sheets were submitted for the file .

installed without a proper permit and the location will
have to be verified before the sign can be installed.

C. Twin Rinks ::e Pavilion - 1500 Abbott Court
Ground Sinn_ with Manual Changeable Copy Board
• Recommendat__n_ for Variance
Mr. John Johnson, C. Johnson Sign Company, 9615 Waveland
Avenue, Franklin =ark, IL 60131 (678-2092) and yr. Gary
Pivar, Partner, Associates, L.L.C. , P.O. Box 5532,
Buffalo Grove, :_ =0089 (847-821-RINK) were present .
Mr. Johnson described the double-faced sign with a
manually changeable copy board below the sign. It
will be 20 ' in height and the setback will be 20 ' from
the property lines at the northeast corner of Weiland .
Road and Abbott :curt per the Sign Code requirements .
The sign will have a white background with black letters
within purple ovals . The letter board will have three
(3) or four lines of copy with 6" black letters .
The sign will be internally illuminated, but it is not an
electronic sian. :t will be readable from 200 feet .
•
APPEARANCE COMMISSION
JANUARY 9, 1997 - PAGE SEVEN EN
Mr. Pivar said the copy will inform people of special
events . An electronic sign will be more expensive and
the amount of information they convey is more limited
because there is a time frame problem of how the letters
are displayed so that they can be read by drivers .
The Buffalo Grove Theatre sign and the new Car Wash sign
are manual changeable copy signs
Mr. Johnson said the Twin Rinks sign will be constructed
of rectangular aluminum boxes with lexan faces . The
skirting will match the main color of the building. The
sign will be maintenance free. The "GE Lexan" poly-
carbonate faces will not crack or peel because the
lettering and painting are done on the inside . The faces
do need to be cleaned periodically to retain the original
luster. The box is all aluminum with enclosed raceways,
all UL approved and the bulbs should be changed
periodically. The outside drum is sprayed with a poly-
urtherane product, by Matthews, and it will not peel .
Mr. Pivar assured the Commissioners that the sign will
be maintained at all times .
Trustee Glover confirmed that the twenty foot (20 ' )
height is measured from the sidewalk grade, not on a
berm which would raise the sign considerably.
Com. Dorfman made a motion to recommend to the Zoning
Board of Appeals and the Village Board that a variance
be granted that would permit the installation of a
manual changeable copy sign for the Twin Rinks Ice
Pavilion at 1500 Abbott Court, as submitted, subject
to the Building Department approval of the location.
Com. Smith seconded the motion.
