Northwest Corner of Busch Pkwy. and Milwaukee Ave.
Full Review: Architecture, Materials and Colors,
Landscaping and Lighting
A Workshop was held on Thursday, December 12, 1996_
The Architecture, Materials, Colors and Landscaping
were described and discussed. The Commissioners made
several recommendations regarding the amount of brick,
blending the air conditioners vents to match the color
of the wall (green was proposed) and the location of
the satellite dish and trash enclosures .
Mr. Stephen Healy, Construction Manager, Midwest Zone,
ESA Management, Inc . 1550 N. Northwest Highway, Suite 401
Park Ridge, IL 60068-1463 (847-375-0306) distributed
revised exterior elevations and photographs of a standard
Extended Stay America building (all dryvit) . With regard
to the a/c vents, the rendering shows a grill that
matches the background of the building.
1 . Architecture. Materials and Colors :
The brick will match Pratt & Lambert "Winslow Gray"
#2270 . The dryvit above the brick will match Pratt &
Lambert "Silver Lining" #2288 . The aluminum gutter,
fascia and trim color will be "White" and the Roof 'will
be asphalt roof shingles will be Elk Prestique II,
Weathered Wood. " Window frame & trim color is "Emerald
Blue. "
With regard to the amount of brick, Mr. Healy informed
the Commissioners that the developer (Corporate Grove)
requires 80% of the building to be brick and Mr. Schar
said this mandate would take precedence over the Appear-
ance Commission recommendation to reduce the amount of
brick.
Mr. Healy described the revised window treatment . There
is soldier coursing over the doorway, over and under the
windows, and at the top of the brick area below the
dryvit .

Com. Weissman suggested additional rows of soldier
coursing around the building to break up the brick plane .
Ch. Gordon said he likes the brick better than the dryvit
building, but he preferred the proportions shown in
the photograph.
Com. Cea suggested using two (2) colors of brick, dark
at the bottom and lighter at the top.
Ch. Gordon disagreed because this would be stripes .
Several other suggestions were made during the discussion
on how to relieve the massive amount of brick:
1 . Soldier coursing between the 1st and 2nd floors
below the louvers .
2 . Use of matching pre-cast concrete window sills
to change the texture of the materials .
3 . Framing the windows on both floors with vertical
brick piers . Mr. Healy said this could be
considered only on the bump out sections .
4 . Use of some quoins at the corners or elsewhere .
Mr. Healy said he would like to Table until he can
discuss the Commissioners' concerns with the developer
and resubmit new elevations . He would like some clear
directions on how to proceed. They will try to incor-
porate the Commissioners' ideas or try to achieve some
compromise with the current building design with two (2)
colors of brick.
Com. Gordon said he preferred to lower the brick to
below the second floor windows, or do the whole building
in brick to achieve the look of the standard design.
Com. Viehman made a motion to Table the review of the
Architecture and Materials for Extended Stay America.
Com. Weissman seconded the motion.
Voice Vote - AYE Unanimously
Mr. Healy was advised to bring samples of the materials
to the next meeting.
