Revised Sign Faces
The above item may be placed on the Village Board Agenda for
Monday, June 17, 1996 . The Appearance Commission will meet to
review the proposed signs on Thursday, June 13 , 1996 .
Attached are excerpts of the June 13 , 1996 Appearance Commission
minutes and supporting exhibits are attached.

Sign Face Changes from Warehouse Store to FINAL SALE
Mr. Anthony J. Garippo, Director of Construction,
Crate & Barrel, 725 Landwehr Road, Northbrook, IL
60062-2393 (480-2018) made the presentation and
requested that the ground sign and wall sign be
changed from Crate & Barrel Warehouse Store to Crate
& Barrel FINAL SALE. He explained that the Buffalo
Grove location is a new concept and a total departure
from all their other stores. They have agonized over
the merchandizing, signs, presentation, etc . The name
is like Neiman Marcus' Last Call . The store will have
samples, returned furniture, and some one-of-a-kind
items that will be sold AS IS.
Com. Cea questioned the appearance of the FINAL SALE
lettering because the way the F and I are joined at
the top, it reads like a block letter A . There
should be a separation.
Com. Weissman commented that the name sounds like a
temporary sign. He suggested Final Sale Center.
Mr. Garippo responded that the signs will be on the
building and on the pole, so people will know that it
is not temporary. They want the store to be a success .
Com. Masure said the name would give a bad impression
because it sounds like a close out sale . It might
not be good for the Village . The name of Crate &
Barrel is the draw and it should be larger.
Ch. Gordon said he understood the concerns, but in
reality, it is their business and they have the choice
of what they name it . He trusts Crate & Barrel' s
marketing people to know their jobs . With reference
to the lettering, they have a graphics department to
design signs and there is a second A on the sign to
distinguish it from the F and I .
Com. Weissman observed that the center gap could very
easily be closed by vandals .

The directional sign was discussed and Mr. Garippo
said they have not made a decision to use it . If
they want to add it to the Wendy' s sign, he will
inform Mr. Schar before having it installed. No lights
would be permitted.
The ground sign will be white metal with Black and Red
silk screened letters . The base will be landscaped
and the flood lights will be screened.
The box sign will have Black and Red metal letters and
may have goose neck uplights attached at the bottom.
Ch. Gordon has seen the building since it was painted
and asked if consideration had been given to painting
the rest of the sides white?
Mr. Garippo answered that Harry Seigle was against
painting the entire building.
Com. Cea made a motion to recommend approval of the
Crate & Barrel FINAL SALE signs as presented, with the
provision that the F could be separated from the I if
the graphics department wants to modify the design.
Com. Weissman seconded the motion.
Roll Call Vote : AYE - Weissman, Cea, Smith and Gordon
NAY - Masure
Motion Passed - 4 to 1
This item will be on the June 17, 1996 Village Board
Consent Agenda.
