Checker Place Temporary Sign Checker Road and Buffalo Grove Roads . Postponed until after item C because petitioner was not present . B. Computer Discount Warehouse tCDW) - Roof Top Screening Lake Cook Road between Hastings Drive and Soo Line rtli Tracks Mr . Tom Maher , Hamilton Partners . 300 Park Boulevard , Inc . , Itasca . IL 60143 ( 250-4920 ) reviewed the site and described the three views of the CDW building that are depicted in the exhibits : i . From the traffic light at Lake Cook and Hastings 2 . From the Hastings Drive entrance into the site 3 . From the overpass going east to west. mere are a number of mecnanicat r ooI top units that service the AC and neat for the office area . They nave been located away from the face of the building to minimize visibility . The question was raised at the previous AC review about how much the units would be seen from the right-of-way . Concern was expressed after the buiiding was completed . After confer- ring with the Building Department this proposal is being made . A five foot (5 ' ) metal panel system would be constructed along the north face . down the west face and turner back along the south face . The height was determined by site iir:.e arawings . inc metal root screen will De tight grey to match the tight grey color of the band that runs along above the windows of the second story and band that continues around the building The light green roof top units and the braces wiii be painted light grey to match the metal panels and minimize the appear- ance from the top of the overpass , going east to west . Ch. Larsen observed from the roof plan that the building appears to step back and he asked if the screening could be truncated at both corners': 'this would effectively hide the equipment and minimize the amount of metal screening . Mr . Maher had no objection to Ch . Larsen ' s suggestion , it there is enough space for maintenance and air circulation. Ch . Larsen informed Mr . Maher that the large sign. reading "OPEN TO THE PUBLIC . - which has been put up on the windows facing Lake Cook Road . is in violation of the Sign Code . He questioned whether Hamilton Partners was aware of it . Ch. Larsen recalled a statement by the owner that the retail store was needed . but they didn ' t depend on it because the business was mostly mail order and they did not expect much walk in traffic . He has observed many cars in the parking lot on Saturdays . Mr . Maher said he was not involved with the initial project and he would make contact with the owner to discuss the sign. Com . Viehman made a motion to recommend approval of the screening of the Computer Discount Warehouse roof top units . as presented , with the stipulation that the corners of the metal screen be truncated . wherever possible , if it does not interfere with any of the equipment or ventilation . Konami Research and Development Building Deerfield Parkway and Busch Parkway Full Review : Architecture/Materials/Colors Lighting/Landscaping/Signs Mr . Scott Shalvis . Director of Production . KLLM Architects . Inc . 2i57 N . Damen Avenue . Chicago . IL 60647 ( 312-235-8700 ) made the presentation. This 1 -story building will be used as a Research and Development Center . It is in addition to and not meant to be complimentary to the main distribution center building which is to the south . 1 . Architecture/Materials and Colors : a . Pre-cast concrete walls and coping wi i i be stained Tan . The spandrel panels will have natural horizontal reveals . b . The metal window frames . door frames . columns . canopy and soffit will be Colonial Red . c . Windows will have insulated glass . tinted green. d . Front doors will have tempered clear glass . Ch. Larsen noted that the reference to aluminum panels below the windows is incorrect . The building is all constructed with pre-cast concrete . There will be a five foot (5 ' ) metal parapet around the building that will screen the four foot (4 ' ) roof top mechanical units . The glass around the corners is curved ( bull-nosed) and projects out six inches (6 ' ) . it is not squared off and will not attract birds to make nests . Com. Weissman made a motion to recommend approval of the architecture , materials and colors of the Konami Research and Development building , as presented . Com . Trilling seconded the motion. Roil Cali Vote : AYE - Viehman . Weissman . Trilling_ .. Lundine and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 5 to 0 . 2 . Landscaping_ Mr . Shalvis described the basic landscape plan. There are existing trees along the property line and they want to provide a natural setting by grouping the trees along Deer- field Parkway . This will give vista views to the entryway . APPEARANCE COMMISSION May i2 . 1994 - Page Three There will be heavy plantings around the main entryway and the corners of the building . There will be evergreens and deciduous bushes . flowers will be added for color . The Village Forester ' s Review , dated May 11 , 1994 . recommends additional plant material to screen the loading dock and dumpster enclosure . Mr . Shaivis agreed to provide additional trees along the south property line . if necessary . This side of the building is pre-cast for security reasons . They want to keep the research center as confidential as possible . Ch . Larsen observed that the other Konami building is only fifty feet ( 50 ' ) away from the lot line and there is existing landscaping , so some additional trees on the south side would be sufficient . The dumpster area is enclosed with pre-cast material with a chain link slatted gate . Com . Lundine made a motion to recommend approval of the Landscape Pian as submitted by Konami , with the stipulation that the petitioner has agreed to add some trees along the south property line to provide additional screening of the truck dock area . Com . Viehman seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote : AYE - Viehman . Weissman , frilling . Lundine and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 5 to O . 3 . Lighting: There will be five (5) parking lot lights . Two ( 2 ) will be along Busch Parkway ; two (2 ) along Deerfield Parkway and one ( 1 ) between the two buildings . The square poles are 25 feet in height and the light source is metal halide . Photo- metrics were provided . The light intensity decreases from the light poles out to the property line . There will be down lights under the canopy and wall pacs at the service entry doors . Com . Viehman made a motion to recommend approval of the Lighting Package as submitted by Konami with the addition of a security light over the man door on the south elevation., Com . APPEARANCE COMMISSION May 12 , 1994 - Page Four 4 . _l.g,p s :_ Mr . Shalvis described the two ( 2 ) signs : I . A three-sided , non- illuminated sign will be located at the corner of Busch Parkway and Deerfield Parkway . It wiii be ten feet ( 10 ' ) in height . The aluminum cabinet and base will be white . The top symbol of the aluminum logo will be PMS 151e Orange ; the bottom symbol will be PMS 185c Red and Konami will be Black . Additional copy will be Black Vinyl and will either read Electronic Games or Computer Games . 2 . A 3 ' x 4 ' directional sign wiii be located near the new combined driveway located on Deerfield Parkway . It will be mounted on 2 ' 6" posts . The background and posts will be white with the Konami symbol , orange and red corporate colors . and all other copy black vinyl . Both signs will have ground tights with ground cover and the light will not shine out into traffic . Ch. Larsen suggested a third identification sign the entrance on Busch Parkway . It could be four square feet (4 sf . ) and could read Konami with an arrow . This would eliminate having to turn the busy corner at Deerfield Parkway . Mr . Shaivis said he would discuss an additional sign with Konami . He asked if the AC had a preference for the ' Games '' `./ copy? Ch. Larsen informed him that the Sign Code specifies "Name and Nature" so either Electronic or Computer would be acceptable , but both sides of the sign must match . Com . Weissman made a motion to recommend approval of the Konami ground sign and directional sign as submitted with the potential of an additional directional sign on Busch Parkway . not to exceed four square feet ( 4 sf . ) and the stipulations that the ground lights be screened with ground cover and the lights are to be aimed and baffled so that light does not shine out into the traffic lanes . Com . Viehman seconded the motion . Roll Cali Vote : AYE - Viehman , Weissman , Trilling , Lundine and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 5 to 0 . Ch . Larsen commended Mr . Shaivis on a good presentation and said the building should be very nice . APPEARANCE COMMISSION May 12 , 1994 - Page Five A . Checker Place Temporary Sign Checker Road and Buffalo Grove Road Signs of Distinction . 149 Wheeling Road, Wheeling, IL (520-0787) was not represented . but a colored rendering had been submitted . so the AC reviewed the sign . The sign has a green background . with white and yellow copy . It is located across from the entrance to Deerfield ' s Bakery and the Post Office at Buffalo Grove Road and Checker Road . Having the price on the sign is not prohibited . but they are often changed , requiring repainting and the colors do not match, but white should not be a problem . The telephone number has a removable panel . The size of the sign is acceptable . but the setback should be verified because the site plan shows the sign outside the property line . Com . Lundine made a motion to recommend approval of the sales sign as submitted for the Checker Place Development . Com . Viehman seconded the motion . Roil Call Vote : AYE - Viehman , Weissman . Trilling . Lundine and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 5 to O . Y. ANNOUNCEMENTS 1 . Mr . Jeff Braiman is the new AC Liaison. 2 . May 26th will definitely be Ch. Larsen ` s last meeting . 3 . Spoerlein Commons Shopping Center - Are the windows covered with blinds because of sun? The Sign Code limits window covering to 1 /3 for security purposes . 4 . There are two large billboard signs at Deerfield Road and Milwaukee Avenue . The Village is aware of them and they are being addressed . 5 . Subway at Country Court has been putting a sandwich sign out on Dundee Road over the weekends again. VI . ADJOURNMENT Com . Weissman made a motion to adjourn. Com . Viehman seconded the motion. Ch.
