1991-08-08 - Appearance Commission - Minutes APPEARANCE COMMISSION VILLAGE OF BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS THURSDAY , AUGUST 8 , 1991 I . CALL TO ORDER Chairman Eddie Larsen called the meeting to order at 7 : 34 P.M. on Thursday, August 8 , 1991 at the Village Hall , 50 Raupp Boulevard. II . ROLL CALL Commissioners Present : D. Ehrhardt , R. Gordon, A. Viehman and E. Larsen. QUORUM PRESENT. Commissioners Absent : C. Bruno and F . Weissman Bldg. Dept . Liaison: James Kelly, Building Inspector III . APPROVAL OF MINUTES July 25 , 1991 - Amendments on Page Two , Paragraph 4 , 1st sentence - insert ' Road . ' It should read : "Arlington Heights Road side of Chase Plaza . " 2nd sentence - delete the last word ' signage ' and insert sign criteria. Com . Viehman made a motion to approve the minutes of July 26 , 1991 as amended. Com. Gordon seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote: AYE - Gordon , Viehman and Larsen NAY - None ABSTAIN - Ehrhardt Motion Passed - 3 to 0 , 1 abstention IV. BUSINESS A. Nu-Deluxe Inc . - 111 Lexington Drive (Formerly Jean Lee Design) Mr . C. J. Knegten, president of the Nu-Deluxe Company, made the presentation. He showed a slide of the building and stated the lettering will be identical but without a logo . Nu-Deluxe is a wholesale company that sells copy machine supplies . Com. Gordon made a motion to recommend approval of the letters as submitted for Nu-Deluxe Inc . on the existing building at 111 Lexington Drive . Letters to be identical to Jean Lee ' s and any holes in the brick are to be patched. Com. Viehman seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote : AYE - Viehman, Ehrhardt , Viehman, Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 4 to 0. B. Woodland Commons - Temporary Construction Sign/Face Change Mrs . Christy Weigel , Project Manager , Zale Groves , Inc . , 100 Lexington Drive , Suite 100 , Buffalo Grove , IL 60089 (537-9191 ) presented a color photo of the existing temporary construction sign and requested that Love ' s Yogurt be changed to "Harris Bank" (black) and "Love ' s Yogurt - Now Open" (red) be added to the right side . The existing Harris Bank temporary sign will be removed . Mrs . Weigel said she didn' t think they will be making any other changes because there will soon be pylon signs on Route 22 . Ch. Larsen said that it is customary to permit developers to make minor changes to temporary signs if they are repainted. Com. Ehrhardt made a motion to recommend approval of the Woodland Commons construction sign changes as submitted . Com. Gordon seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote : AYE - Viehman, Ehrhardt , Gordon and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 4 to 0 . C. Buffalo Grove Post Office - Wall Sign Buffalo Grove Road and Checker Drive Mr . Ken Latanzi , Project Manager , Mc Lennan & Thebault , Inc . , 1771 Commerce Drive , Elk Grove Village , IL 60007 (228-6700) made the presentation. Cast aluminum letters painted white will be mounted on the west elevation. They will be illuminated with ground fixtures . There will also be vinyl letters over the front door . Ch. Larsen recused himself from voting because his company just did the signs on the Aurora Mail Distribution Center . He remarked that the Zip Code was included and cited other towns , Wheeling and Mundelein, that has it . He inquired why the Zip Code is not on the B.G. P.O. and said it would balance the sign better . Mr . Latanzi responded that the Postal Service usually does not put the Zip Code will be on the main identification sign. It will be over the front door . He said he would inquire about adding the Zip Code to the wall sign. He had no objection. Com. Gordon asked about the line-of-sight with the mound of dirt in front . The sign won' t be seen coming from the south. Mr . Latanzi responded that dirt has been piled up, but it will be moved , so that the berm is only 6 feet in height . Ch. Larsen said there will be another street furniture tower in front . APPEARANCE COMMISSION August 8 , 1991 - Page Two Com. Gordon made a motion to recommend approval of the signs as submitted for the United States Post Office building on Buffalo Grove Road , with the stipulation that should they want to add the Zip Code , they may do so without returning to the Appearance Commission for approval . Com. Viehman seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote : AYE - Ehrhardt , Viehman and Gordon NAY - None ABSTAIN - Larsen Motion Passed - 3 to 0 , 1 abstention D. Sandpiper Condominiums - Dundee Road , West side of entrance Ground Sign Change to Buffalo Ridge Condominiums Mrs . Penny Hughes , Hughes & Son Signs , P.O. Box 367 , 652 W. Terra Cotta , Crystal Lake , IL 60014 (815) 459-1887 , described the new sign. The background will be Robin' s Egg Blue , with Process Blue lettering. The underline and border will be Carmine . The frame will be stained California Rustic and the posts will be stained Red Cedar . Ch. Larsen informed Mrs . Hughes that the sign must be setback 10 feet from the property line . Com. Viehman made a motion to recommend approval of the Buffalo Ridge Condominiums sign as submitted . Com. Ehrhardt seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote : AYE - Ehrhardt , Viehman, Gordon and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 4 to 0 . E. CB Commercial Real Estate Signs on Half Day Road Ms . Jackie Elliott , CB Commercial , 100 Tri-State International Suite 140 , Lincolnshire , IL 60069 ( ) made the presentation. She explained that Coldwell Banker has been changed to CB Commercial with new identification and a new logo . She requested replacing the existing sign with a new sign. The colors are kelly green with red and black lettering . She also requested an identical sign to be erected on the outlots to the east , near the Condell Hospital property. Ch. Larsen explained that the signs could be approved for a six-month period with two renewals . The second sign would have to located 250 feet from any other sign. Ms . Gordon made a motion to recommend approval of the Vee shaped sign as submitted by CB Commercial at Woodland Commons . Com. Ehrhardt seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote : AYE - Ehrhardt , Viehman, Gordon and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 4 to 0 . Com. Viehman made a motion to recommend approval of a similar temporary for lease sign for the vacant property next to the Condell Hospital property on Route 22 between the hospital property and the interior road to Woodland Commons as submitted , under Sign Code , Section. 14 . 32 . 020 for 6 months . Com. Gordon seconded the motion. Roll Call Vote: AYE - Ehrhardt , Viehman, Gordon and Larsen NAY - None Motion Passed - 4 to 0 . F . Country Court - Dundee Road , Awnings over storefronts . No representative was present . Mr . Marshall Atlas requested approval to put up a burgundy color awning over the stores on the east end temporarily to see how they would look. Li Ch. Larsen said there is no provision in the Sign Code to permit awnings without signage . Awnings are included when they are submitted with the review of a new shopping center . Awnings would change the looks of the whole center and would probably tie the different colored signs together . If Mr . Atlas decides he wants to put them up permanently, drawings should be submitted for AC review. Ch. Larsen said he had no objections to having a temporary awning put up , but questioned how long would temporary be? No motion was made . The Building Department can require a construction permit for the temporary awning . V. ANNOUNCEMENTS - None VI . ADJOURNMENT Com. Viehman made a motion to adjourn. Ch.
