Welcome & Call to Order at 7:05pm II. Roll Call A. Commissioners Present: Chair Judy Samuels, Vice Chair Marty Sussman, Commissioners Mark Weiner, Dean Klassman, Beth Shapiro, Jack Shapiro, Leo Njongmeta, Allie Zalay B. Commissioners Not Present: Commissioners, Matthew Dragon, Donna Garfield, Gowri Magati, Lexi Robinson, Avi Samuels, Debbie Verson C. Trustee Liaison Present: David Weidenfeld D. Staff Liaison Present: Evan Michel III. Approval of Meeting Minutes: June 28, 2023 A. Motion: Commissioner Dean Klassman B. Second: Vice Chair Marty Sussman C. In Favor: All Present D. Opposed: None E. Abstain: None F. Motion carries IV. Chair report (Judy Samuels) A. Items on the agenda are driven by commissioners. i. If there is a topic you would like discussed, please advise Judy the week before the meeting (earlier in the week). V. Trustee(s) report (David Weidenfeld) A. The Clove is progressing nicely. David discussed other developments going up in Buffalo Grove. B. It is still undecided if Buffalo Grove will have a Buffalo Grove parade for Labor Day. Many businesses and groups are hesitant to participate. C. The Park District plans to build a permanent stage and seating at Mike Rylko Park. It will be handicapped accessible and they expect to be completed by next year. i. Vice Chair Sussman asked if new businesses in the Clove will submit accessibility plans. ii. Trustee David Weidenfeld said he will look into it. iii. The RKCRD is interested in participating in reviewing the accessibility plans. iv. Chair Samuels also wanted to make sure the interior layouts of the businesses will meet Federal/State accessibility codes (whichever takes higher precedence) VI. Staff Liaison Report (Evan Michel) A. He will fill us in as we discuss each topic. RICK KAHEN COMMISSION FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES July 26, 2023 VII. Sub-Committee report Buffalo Grove Days (8/31 — 9/4) A. Buddy Baseball (9/2; 9/3-Rain date) (Commissioner Klassman) i. Goal is to have 35 players and buddies to assist them. ii. Commissioner Klassman hopes to have a DJ for the event. iii. Wondered if we could have additional entertainment. For example, a face painter or a balloon artist to entertain those in attendance. iv. He also suggested it would be good to have additional entertainment for the Fun and Food event. v. Commissioner Klassman asked Staff Liaison Michel if the Village can contact the Park District, who is managing Buffalo Grove Day, if they can source this entertainment. B. Staff Liaison Evan Michel emphasized if we have expenses for our upcoming events that it is important to let him know beforehand. i. Evan advised us that the police department will be at Buddy Baseball to assist in traffic and parking lot control. ii. For Buddy Baseball, Public Works will provide signage and tables. iii. Evan asked Dean and Judy to confirm what our requirements will be. iv. Molly from the Village created a flyer promoting Buddy Baseball. It appears on the Village Website. V. It was suggested that Beverly Sussman and Eric Smith, the past and current Village President, be honored by throwing out the first pitch at the Buddy Baseball game. vi. Staff Liaison Michel will ask about construction vehicles and request that they will not be in the parking lot of the baseball field during the game. C. Fun & Food i. Staff Liaison Evan Michel filled us in on his conversation with Commissioner Debbie Verson who was not in attendance at the meeting. 1. Debbie has been working on suppliers for the food. 2. The Park District is looking for a sponsor for Fun and Food. The cost will be a $1,000. 3. In addition, the Park District will try to find a DJ and additional entertainment for the event. D. Evan advised the CRD has $3,000 of unrestricted money. i. This can be used for any of our upcoming events or programs. ii. The balance of the cash in our account is directed for certain events. E. Marty said we should focus on Fun and Food providing value and fun. It is a big day for attendees. i. Marty would like to provide more excitement to make it a big event. 2 RICK KAHEN COMMISSION FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES July 26, 2023 ii. Jack and Allison mentioned there should be a DJ, face painters, or balloon artists. iii. Evan, our staff liaison, said he will look to see what he can do. iv. Evan realizes we need to create more fun for Fun and Food. v. Kona Ice will participate by providing free Snow Cones. vi. Marty suggested we send out a letter to businesses in Buffalo Grove to contribute to our three main events. vii. Mark suggested it would be more effective to going to certain larger businesses directly. We could have our sponsorship to include Buddy Baseball, Fun and Food, and Buddy Bowling. viii. Evan suggested at our November meeting, the commission should plan a strategy to raise money for all three events beginning in 2024. F. Website and Mobile App Updates (Chair Samuels) i. Both Website and Mobile App has been updated to include 2023 dates, wording and registration links. G. Courtesy Shuttle (8/31 — 9/4) (Chair Samuels) i. Signup sheet was circulated for Commissions to sign up. Will follow up with Commissioners who were not in attendance at this evening's meeting. ii. Chair Samuels shared observation that no main bus service was being provided between 11 a-1 p for the Business and Crafts Fair. H. Buddy Bowling (10/25) (Commissioner Weiner) i. Commissioner Weiner asked Staff Liaison Michel if Molly could create a flier for Buddy Bowling. Vill. Unfinished Business A. Frontier Days update— Part 1 Follow up—written report to be shared as Commissioner Garfield was not in attendance. i. They do exactly what we do only they appear to have more funding. 1. They get Jewel as one of their sponsors. Could we approach Jewel or maybe some other BG businesses for sponsorship? 2. Their fundraising contributes $1,000 towards the event. 3. Funding possibly through sponsors, more fundraising, etc? ii. Grounds are a lot larger than our. Have rides but not sure how they compare to ours. iii. Meals 1. They Pre-register people; Not sure about day-of registration. 2. Get about 900 people (not sure what ration is between participants vs. family). 3. There are no limits on the count of people and they feel they are not being taken advantage of. 4. Free popcorn boxes were handed out until they ran out. 5. Provided hotdogs and chips. Frontier Days update— Part 2 Commissioner Beth Shapiro and Commissioner Jack Shapiro. In attendance, provided additional information as they also went to the special needs program at Frontier Days. Frontier Days is similar to Buffalo Grove Days and is hosted by Arlington Heights. i. They host a similar program to our Fun and Foods at their event. ii. They provided free rides and food for their participants. iii. Food consisted of a hotdog and chips. i. In addition, they served the participants food which took 40 minutes. iv. Jack and Beth mentioned it was a very long walk to the food area and a shuttle was not provided. v. Jack and Beth felt the positive of this event was the DJ they had for entertainment and food was served under a tent. IX. New Business X. Good and Welfare XI. Comments from the Audience I.
