2019-01-23 - Commission for Residents with Disabilities - Minutes T with Disabilities Minutes from Meeting of Village of Buffalo Grove Commission for Residents with Disabilities Wednesday January 23, 2019 @ 7:00 PM I. Call to order at 7: 11 PM • Commissioners Present: Donna Garfield, Geri Miller Brown, Marty Sussman, Lexi Robinson, Deb Verson, Mark Weiner, Dean Klassman, Judy Samuels, Leo Njongmeta, Beth Shapiro • Also Present Trustee Liaisons Les Ottenheimer and Dave Weidenfeld • Commissioners Absent: Rick Kahen, David Morton, Larry Sweica, Jack Shapiro • Staff Liaison Present: Brian Sheehan II. Approval of minutes from November 28, 2018: • Motion: Mark • Second: Marty • Non-opposed, all agreed III. Introduction of guest Jillian Burgard of Roots Autism Solutions & Therapeutic Academy • Work extends throughout Chicago, not only in BG • Started in 2016, started by providing ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) services for children and young adults with Autism • Responding to a need in the community for early childhood therapy and support for children with Autism in the community • Provide in-home care, centered-based therapy, and provide IEP advocacy support for families when children with Autism transition from Early Intervention to Kindergarten • Have BCBAs (Board Certified Behavior Analysts) and therapists • Do 1 hour a week of parent training as well • All funded through insurance • Open to learn more about Buddy Baseball and partnering with us • Neighborhood Parents Network in Chicago - non-profit group that is a parent consortium, they have a Children's Disabilities Resource Fair each year (an expo of all different types of providers/resources) IV. New Business • Senior Expo April 30, 2019 at 10am-2pm i. We will need at least 3 members to attend • Village Reception February 24, 2019 at 1pm at The Wild Buffalo i. Three commissioners are being honored for milestones! Rick with 25 years, Marty has 10 years! • Bowlero Event April 18, 2019 from 6-8pm i. Rick met with Steve Balinski ii. Budget will be $500 from each commission iii. Kids will be free for food, others will be $5 (there will be wristbands) iv. Someone will collect money during check-in 1. We will need to advertise that food for parents will be $5 cash only v. Same food from last year (pizza, chicken fingers, pretzels) vi. Ages 9-21 vii. We will be responsible for contacting 1. District 96 a. Marty will be the contact 2. District 102 a. Marty will be the contact 3. District 103 a. Mark will be the contact 4. District 125 a. Marty will be the contact 5. Buddy Baseball a. Dean will be the contact viii. Rotary will be responsible for contacting 1. District 21 2. District 214 3. Buffalo Grove High School ix. Motion: Donna Garfield 1. Motion to open this event up to individuals with Special Needs ages 9+ and not limit advertising by location, limit to 100 bowlers overall based on capacity, participants will be selected on a first-come-first-serve basis 2. Second: Beth Shapiro 3. All in favor, none opposed x. Mark will reach out to Steve Balinski about our updates from tonight's meeting xi. Mark will confirm the capacity numbers with Bowlero xii. RSVP will be by April 1, 2019 • New CRD Brochures i. Marty emailed a few samples of brochures for our different events ii. Drafts look great! iii. Brian will print a few color copies for next month's meeting so we can see what they look like iv. Marty will re-email the drafts out for feedback • Should we send emails out if people are ill or in the hospital? • Brian will be sending out an email to businesses in the Village reminding them that the law requires them to shovel the space between handicap spots and the curbs i. Brian will find out how Public Works determines which sidewalks are plowed by the Village • New VBG Website i. If we want to add content about the CRD, we should contact Evan Mitchell V. Commissioner Reports • Oak Park Police Cares wristbands that identify individuals as having Autism or being non-verbal so that police are aware of their needs- Deb will conduct further research on this IX.
